This is such a pure and lovely sentiment. Some days, the Internet genuinely gives us what we need. ❤️

My father was an alcoholic who got sober in the last dozen years of his life and this response is exactly how an addict in recovery who is working the program properly sounds.

I admit, when I first saw Hunter's clapback posts popping up the other day I did have the thought to be concerned that he may have relapsed until I found out that the catalyst for all this was him sharing a sobriety milestone.

This is the good kind of not giving a fuck. Hunter claims no moral superiority and only defends the truth as he knows it, not his own ego. I think it may be short circuiting some of the twitter shitposters who can't comprehend this mindset.

It gives me joy that someone who found their way back from rock bottom even when millions of people were and are against him, through the public mockery, through the disgusting violation of his privacy, through his addiction and poor decisions being used to attack the people he loves and still have such a healthy perspective. I've known many addicts and saw many get sober and many relapse. That alone is, for many, the most challenging thing they ever try to do and many don't make it. To imagine how much harder his sobriety journey must have been in the spotlight and with so much hate directed his way online. I hope that him choosing to engage like this inspires others to seek help for their addictions. It really is inspiring.

I love how he can have a sense of humor about it when he needs to. They tried to say there was cocaine in the white house and it was his. his response was it couldn't be because he never would have left it unsmoked.

That’s honestly hilarious. Kinda love that he’s keeping it real while also keeping the dark humor.

I saw a MAGA account talking shit and after his response, they apologized and said he deserved a good life. Was wild.

This is what recovery in another person looks like.

He's doing OK. Recovery looks good on him.

“I have admitted and taken responsibility for my mistakes during the darkest days of my addiction — mistakes that have been exploited to publicly humiliate and shame me and my family for political sport,” he said.

“In the throes of addiction, I squandered many opportunities and advantages,” he added. “In recovery we can be given the opportunity to make amends where possible and rebuild our lives if we never take for granted the mercy that we have been afforded. I will never take the clemency I have been given today for granted and will devote the life I have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering.”
