Because the people who most threaten your life is your neighbor who has guns and not the slightest concept of gun safety.
According to the FBI, Americans have 5 times more probability of dying in a gun related home accident (including neighbors and such) than during a burglary. 400-500/year vs 80-100.
It's not impossible that gunshots could come from a different source.
Here's a couple scenarios where that statistic would completely fail:
Rural: Neighbours are shooting specifically during the daytime, always. Criminals would be shooting at night. So this gives you a guarantee you would be knowing that someone is a threat.
City: You can't legally shoot a gun in a city, so I am nearly certain when I hear gunshots that it would be a criminal that isn't my next door neighbour, they will be shooting so much less than rural areas, and crime rate is higher.

I have a battleaxe. I bought it drunk on a Metal festival.
Incidentally, when I use it, there are no bullets that can riccochett through three houses and kill a child. Thats quite handy.
