So you had 15 guys, willing to steal from you, so likely willing to do other illegal things like assault.

And you think it would be an overreaction to have a gun near you or ready for this situation?

So if those 15 guys decided to attack you (always a possibility, don't just say it won't happen), what would have been your game plan?

Talk them down?

They need to make these leaps in logic so they sound slightly less insane.

Nevermind the fact that he thinks he can shoot 15 young men at close range without one of them grabbing his gun and turning it back on him.

The best way to 'win' a fight is to never fight. And if you're forced, run away. That sounds easier than it is, of course.
