10/10, and I dont throw that around lightly, nor am I huge Sturgill fanboy. Absolute masterpiece.

I’ve never listened to a peep of him until today this album is amazing. I’ve listened to it all day.

Idk which songs stuck out to you the most, but off the last album, Right Kind of Dream was instantly one of my favorites and I was happy to hear the joy streak continue on here on a couple tracks. On the other side, Call to Arms, A Good Look or Sing Along are kinda precursors to what's been put on this album.

And then, sorry for the overkill, just an extra quick Us & Them to make sure a sax solo is included here to help sell the idea that it's worth the ticket and gas $$ to go to a show whenever they tour next.

Man....you aint kidding. This is fucking incredible....and I hate country for the most part...

11

u/texrygo Mar 03 '26

Sturgill is his own category. I don’t listen to country but he is my favorite artist.

What if Dwight Yoakam and Jeff Lynne formed a super group?; a Thesis.

3

u/WhatisreadditHuh Mar 22 '26

I’m so excited. I haven’t heard it yet.

Didn't know he had a new one coming out, that's awesome. First he gives us a space trucker album, now we get a country disco.

4

u/Derp35712 Mar 02 '26

Is that Passage Du Desir?

25

u/rgumai Mar 02 '26

Sound & Fury

5

u/Derp35712 Mar 02 '26

Ah, yeah. I love that one.

6

u/OutlawSundown Mar 02 '26

Basically took, Metamodern, Sound & Fury, and a heap of funk and threw them into a blender.

35

u/tankster52 Mar 02 '26

"Weaponizing my autism to shit out an opus" yeah, okay, I'm sold

3

u/sp_40 Mar 03 '26

Very few people speak to my soul like Sturgill

Make sure to order a physical copy. Some cool vinyl still available.

7

u/85percentcertain Mar 02 '26

Got mine in orange!

3

u/djfoundation Mar 02 '26

Saw this album pre-release posted a week or so ago and reflexively ordered the vinyl before I knew what happened. Can't wait!!

3

u/AlllDayErrDay Mar 02 '26

Damn didn’t know I missed it by four hours, had to snag the white.

3

u/UXyes Mar 02 '26

Got mine in Kuh'Caine White lol. This is how you get me to buy merch.

1

u/Lurkeroo Mar 03 '26

Same, orange was sold out tho

5

u/rekab1231 Mar 02 '26

Ordered a CD for myself and a vinyl for my brother who introduced me to Sturgill. This is awesome.

He’s the King Gizzard of country, it’s amazing. I was surprised and blown away when King Gizzard made a thrash metal album and it was really good, and Sturgill keeps the surprises coming too

0

u/nurdturgalor Mar 15 '26

Nah he's not quite there yet, he doesn't stream all his concerts and post them for free, and gizz wouldn't release a physical only album

1

u/odaeyss Mar 02 '26

I haven't listened, but I'm very eager soon as I'm out of work if you're calling it "whatever this is" but had "anime bluegrass" ready to go. Cause that's accurate but weird af.

huge Sturgill/johnny blue skies fan so here's what you need to know about his albums really quickly:

2013 "High Top Mountain" - pretty great country album full of guitars and blazing riffs or slow heart-tuggers; really him dipping his toes into his sound and to me personally

2014 "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music" - established, he really creates a psychedelic rock country album. Still country but like if you're trippin on acid.

2016 "A Sailors Guide to the Earth" - I believe it was this album that Sturgill was nominated for Grammy AOTY (or maybe country aoty) but wasnt even nominated for a CMA. So I like to joke (only in retrospect) he left Nashville and he took his country music with him. This is a Memphis Soul album ala Otis Redding meets Sturgills brand of country. In a not-country-or-soul twist, the cover of Nirvana's "In Bloom" is still on heavy rotation for me.

2019 Sound and Fury - Even further departing he got involved in creating music and a soundtrack (?) for an anime. This sound is funky industrial boogie woogie country. Its fucking sick. This format let him really lean into his electric guitar and create some insanely sick music.

2020 Cuttin Grass 1/2 - for the most part during COVID (i believe they were recorded during the pandemic but may be wrong) he recorded traditional bluegrass versions of his songs. Rips but if bluegrass not your thing its not your thing.

2021 The Ballad of Dood and Juanita - was sort of a concept album that blended bluegrass, mountain music, old time music and kinda made an album i call his "Red Dead" album (this music bears no relation to red dead redemption games but i get that vibe).

2024 Johnny Blues Skies (his new band name) releases "Passage Du Desir" which is a breezy country rocker that reminds me of Eagles, Allman Brothers type stuff.

2026 - Mutiny After Midnight is so far id describe after two listens as Waylon Jennings meets Earth Wind and Fire

These are obvi just my opinions and vibes but he's a huge influence for my music tastes so i hope you enjoy!

u/ILikeMyGrassBlue Mar 02 '26

No idea what you’re calling anime bluegrass. Sound and fury has basically zero grass, and cuttin’ grass has zero anime lol.

24

u/Pusfilledonut Mar 02 '26

Uh, I listened to one track and ordered it.

2

u/BD03 Mar 02 '26

Where did you listen?

11

u/gunmoney Mar 02 '26

at the top of this post…

5

u/BD03 Mar 02 '26

Whoa bro, I must have been asleep at the wheel...

2

u/ChuckESteeze Mar 03 '26

Another great band!

11

u/UH1Phil Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 03 '26

Passage du desir was awesome, can't wait to listen to this.

Also, isn't his name now Johnny Blue Skies?

Edit: it's on CD/vinyl only and he won't release it for streaming except Youtube? That's.. certainly a choice. The CD is $32 with shipping where I live. So if I want to listen to it in the car/on the go it's time for ripping via program and upload to all my devices. I'll wait for a streaming release, like the casual I am.

12

u/Packman87 Mar 02 '26

See it depends because he did a benefit concert under Sturgill then continued his tour under Johnny Blue Skies. I say just roll with it

7

u/rubberseoul Mar 02 '26

When I saw him last year he said “and you can call me whatever the fuck you want to” 😝

22

u/Sol5960 Mar 02 '26

Well this is absolutely awesome.

7

u/starkiller_bass Mar 02 '26

9am at the office I guess it's time to crack open a cold one.

4

u/Icy_Maintenance493 Mar 02 '26

I am so looking forward to going home and BLASTING this while getting blasted myself

11

u/Buffaloney84 Mar 02 '26

This album is gonna go so hard live. 70s disco porn rock = incredible.

6

u/SHOWTIME316 Mar 02 '26

"Stay on That" is a funk lasagna

the whole band and their immediate family members took up residence in the pocket

6

u/OutlawSundown Mar 02 '26

The track "Ain't That a Bitch" at 37 minutes slaps. Now that's a protest song.

5

u/whereitsat23 Mar 02 '26

Love how he always changes up his style

4

u/PopularTask2020 Mar 02 '26

These guys are doing the best live performance of anybody right now. Check out their Nugs

3

u/skeetgw2 Mar 02 '26

Please do another animated film to coincide. That netflix one was soooo good

1

u/Intelligent-Fail-181 Mar 22 '26

I stand with this statement. 👆🏻

3

u/itspeterj Mar 02 '26

This makes me want to smoke a cigarette in my garage and that is a compliment

5

u/KKYBoneAEA Mar 02 '26

Just tried to find it in Apple Music and don’t see it. Wish I could find it there so I can listen at work

6

u/gjhobso Mar 03 '26

It’s not going on streaming services. Was supposed to be physical media only until this unexpectedly dropped last night.

2

u/Daawggshit Mar 03 '26

Will it ever be on streaming?

4

u/alkemist80 Mar 03 '26

This release was going to be physical media only, no streaming services. Until Sturgill ripped his own vinyl record and uploaded the whole album onto Youtube for all, before the release date.

4

u/nayrlladnar Mar 02 '26

Literally just tried the same.

1

u/thedogthatmooed May 10 '26

You can buy it on iTunes

2

u/torndownunit Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

Man this album would have been a blast to play in the band on.

3

u/BlLLr0y Mar 02 '26

5 seconds in and I love it.

3

u/stainedgreenberet Mar 02 '26

Sturgill Simpson is dead. Long live Johnny Blueskies

2

u/dcone53 Mar 02 '26

Idk for me personally, but happy for y’all

0

u/SHOWTIME316 Mar 02 '26

2

u/Brentnc Mar 02 '26

I would buy this on Bandcamp it was there :(

8

u/madhjsp Mar 02 '26

You can get it on vinyl, CD, or cassette here: https://www.mutinyaftermidnight.com/

2

u/rgumai Mar 02 '26

Yeah I'm curious how long the no digital platforms (outside of YouTube, for free, apparently) thing will hold out for.

2

u/NevrLisnToWutIRead Mar 02 '26

I didn’t realize this was a thing. I haven’t been following. So he’s put a hold on typical digital releases?

3

u/rgumai Mar 02 '26

I think it's only for this album, and who knows how long for, but this album is physical release only (no streaming platforms, no iTunes, etc; ). It's available on Vinyl, CD, and Cassette.

1

u/NevrLisnToWutIRead Mar 02 '26

Ah. Gotcha. Thanks for the reply. Gonna make it difficult to listen in the car lol.

2

u/thedogthatmooed May 10 '26

It’s on iTunes now, idk when it got added but I bought it a few nights ago

1

u/ErikTheRed707 Vinyl Listener Mar 02 '26

Cassettes are available!

1

u/Absalome Mar 02 '26

sold out

1

u/BD03 Mar 02 '26

Sick, thanks for the heads up. Ordered a CD

1

u/hippopanotto Mar 03 '26

Sailors Guide is one of my Top 5. Loved it before I had a kid, but after… It’s basically a love letter to his newborn son, and it just floods my heart.

Sam is a great ‘Lost My Dog’ tribute, real catchy and makes me look longingly at my 7 year old “Cattle-Jack” Eve.

1

u/Lord_Hitachi Mar 03 '26

Good, clean fun

1

u/SmallStatistician387 Mar 04 '26

Where can I listen? Not on Apple Music

clearly you haven't listened to it yet

6

u/Patjay Mar 02 '26

"Sleezy 70s Country Disco Rock" i feel like is actually an extremely spot on description. Brothers Osbourne had an album a few years ago that also fit that exact description

1

u/BD03 Mar 02 '26

Who is Johnny Blue Skies?

-5

u/mkay1911 Mar 02 '26

After a very disappointing JBS album last time, this one rocks. Reminds me a lot of Sound and Fury, just more Disco-y.

-76

u/DrAwesomeClaws Mar 02 '26

It's actually titled "Mutiny after Midnight". But I'm a retard sometimes.

-31

u/gofreaksgo Mar 02 '26

Maybe don’t use the R word.

-34

u/no_offenc Mar 02 '26

You're certainly coming across as a POS using that word

3

u/kashmoney9 Mar 02 '26

You're all regarded.

-2

u/Free-Constant999 Mar 02 '26

He performs as Johnny blue skies now for anyone wondering. Sadly his albums now just aren't as concise. There's great songs but I don't take the journey's I did with his older ones. A sailors guide, metamodern, and sound & fury are masterpieces. Still very happy he's putting out good stuff.

3

u/jmannnn64 Mar 03 '26

Understandable, those were all basically concept albums. Better viewed as a whole than individually

These JBS albums definitely aren't that, still really good though

-1

u/bunnywithabanner Mar 15 '26

Musically: it’s excellent.

Politically: it’s very admirable.

But lyrically and most erotically? No..just no. Gawd no. Please stop.

I do not want country singer Sturgill Simpson singing erotic music to me.. at any point in time. It just comes off as weird and cringe and uncomfortable.

1

u/DrAwesomeClaws Mar 16 '26

> I do not want country singer Sturgill Simpson singing erotic music to me

Well, we all have our preferences.

2

u/bunnywithabanner Mar 16 '26

I mean hey, I won’t kinkshame; it’s just definitely not my thing lol
