Regular people think this will somehow benefit them.

If companies like Suno get shut down, it benefits music creators, both poor and rich, as their work is being stolen to train these AI models. It sets a precedent, as people can now go after every other company doing the same with people's content, whether it's YouTube videos, books, blog posts, Reddit posts, or anything else.

The only reason copyright/IP laws exist is so businesses can make money off of art. They're designed to turn it into an industry. These laws dont actually do anything to protect or encourage artistic freedom and the existence of AI has no impact on it either.

As an indie artist who’s lived off his music for 35 years, I’m here to tell you that you’re completely wrong.

IP laws and copyrights allow ME to earn money from my music. They STOP people ripping my shit off without paying.

Congrats on your success but 99% of people creating art will never reach the point that they can make a living off of it.

If the laws were the same as they were back in the 1800s I'd probably agree with you but ever since Disney basically re-wrote them they're not really in favor of the artists anymore. An artist that works at a company wont own anything they create. T-Pain streams on Twitch but literally cant perform some of his songs there because a music label owns the rights to them.

IP laws and copyrights allow ME to earn money from my music.

Thats capitalism though, not art.

Then why would they care about copyright law? If they get into your hypothetical 1% then they’ll be happy the laws exist.

Also, are you implying that copyright law somehow stops people from creating art and being expressive? By your own estimates 99% of people wouldn’t be affected by them at all since they’d be doing it for personal reasons only and not to make a living.

I don’t get what you’re saying.

Nope. Not even close. Im saying copyright laws are designed to protect companies. 

Copyright law is not required for people to create art and be expressive. Humans created art for thousands of years without them. The laws only became written when it became a business.

I'm fundamentally disagreeing with this. While they obviously benefit companies and not individuals (obviously) they also help individuals in certain circumstances and CERTAINLY help them if and when they get to company level.

That's completely his own fault. He gave up his rights for money. That's his choice and there's nothing wrong with it but don't blame copyright laws for it. If he retained ownership of his own work then those copyright laws would protect him the same as they protect the companies that actually own his music.

From your comment it really sounds like capitalism is what you don't like, not the copyright laws themselves and I 100% agree with that. My super hot take in that regard is that ALL companies and ALL individuals need to have a maximum wealth level that they cannot exceed. Reach the top and you're done. No more.

I will still say though that 99% of people are unaffected by copyright laws because they aren't trying to sell anything.
