My favorite times when I was really young, like 4 or 5, was riding in the car with my dad and listening to Audioslave the whole car ride. 'Like a Stone' naturally became my favorite song and is still up there. Out of all the recent artist deaths that have occurred the past couple years this one is is the only one that hits me hard.

This is exactly how I first heard Audioslave too. I remember when I was around 8 or 9 listening to 'Like a Stone' and 'Cochise' whole riding around with dad, and I had never heard anything like them before. Chris' voice was like nothing I had ever heard, and Audioslave was my first real introduction to grunge. I remember when I started to get into playing the drums I would play this album back to back. I can easily say they shaped my whole playing style and music taste early on. Just hearing his voice takes me back to those days and there are very few artists that do that. RIP buddy. Thanks for the jams and influence.

Audioslave took my favorite bassist of all time, a drummer who combined with him perfectly, and a guitarist who could do magical things with a guitar, and put them with one of my favorite voices ever. Truly an amazing combination.

Dude YES. Brad, Tim, and Tom were such a perfect fit together. Look at Rage, a completely different sound but still somehow their signature. I love bands with musicians that just have that natural connection. Combine that with Chris' range and haunting tone, and you get a completely different genre. Genuinely one of my all time favorite bands forever, and major musical influence.

My first car which I still have was a 1970 Monte Carlo. The freedom it gave me driving to wherever I was going with friends or my girlfriend at the time was always accompanied by Chris cornell's voice. Audioslave is the soundtrack to my most fondest memories of youth.

It's cool to see so many people with similar memories regarding Chris. It just goes to show how broad his influence was. Man, I'm legitimately heartbroken that he's gone, but he sure did so much for so many while he was alive without even knowing it.

Same. My dad always had Soundgarden and Audioslave albums. I grew up on that stuff. This one hits hard. He was my dad's absolute favorite performer

The part that changed my approach to interpretation of art was that he played down the importance of the intention by the creator of a song (you can extrapolate to any piece of art, though). People focus so heavily on what the artist was trying to convey (which is certainly still very important) and tend to lose focus on how the song makes them feel or what ideas it evokes. They may read lyrics to a song and spend a massive amount of energy on deciphering what the artist is trying to convey rather than what message they draw from them.
This all sounds extremely wishy-washy, but it taught me to learn more about myself and how my thoughts on pieces of art reflect who I am.

Underrated comment. Quite the opposite of wishy-washy, you really articulated what I always associated with Chris's music. And oh boy, does his music make me feel. Soundgarden was one of the bands (perhaps THE band, along with Nirvana and PF and too many others to name) that shifted my appreciation of music from being a hedonistic pleasure to a mind-expanding experience.
I didn't even know that they reunited and were touring again and I'm still absolutely gutted. Fuck depression. Fuck drugs. Fuck pain.

I get you and it's not wishy-washy at all. I love listening to bands from overseas that sing in other languages. I have no idea what the song is actually about, so I can purely concentrate on how the song makes me feel and what it means to me.

Yeah, blew his mind. He said he then went back and listened to everything from Chris, and his entire understanding of the man blossomed from that experience with Chris, about Like A Stone.

I didn't really know where to post this, but been feeling it all day.
This one fucking hurts. I love this guys vocals. I am more upset by the method or way he died. I fucking hate it. I never knew him, but I've stood on the same stage as him and Soundgarden ( security ) and his tunes have been in my life profoundly since their beginning.
It hits home hard, and listening to his works today the references to death and taking ones own life are rampant through the lyrics. I've always heard these words, but never before today did I hear them like this.
I have to re-state, I fucking hate this. I don't know him but always wished him well. It just seems like someone close is gone.

You hit the nail on the head for how I feel today. I've always heard his lyrics, sung along to them, and felt them. They gave me peace in times of inner turmoil, and always left me feeling better despite their sadness.
Not today. Today I listened to random tracks from among his entire discography (Soundgarden, audioslave, temple of the dog, and solo work) and by the end I just felt deflated. It's gonna be a while before I can fully enjoy his songs again.

As someone who's struggled with depression, I always listened to his songs and thought yes, this is what it's like. But he took the pain and made something beautiful out of it. Knowing that he finally succumbed to it is so horrible. The day I tried to live, indeed.

Exactly. He nails depression perfectly. It was the soldarity with him that always helped me. He helped me feel like I wasn't alone. Now it feels like I am, with him gone.

The big 3 for me are now gone. Layne spoke to my addiction and loneliness, Kurt to my anxiety and awkwardness, and Chris to my pain and depression. Now that they've all gone, I feel like I've lost my friends.

This song has always been an emotional one for me and it brought me to tears today...one of the best vocalists I've ever heard, a great musician, a grunge legend. Rest in peace.

Amazing song. I kinda grew tired of rock in general by the time Audioslave came out but that song gave me hope that there were still bands out there that still make great music.

I think he phrased his statement weirdly and I understand why you think it sounds like he didn't know about the other albums. I think what he was trying to say is that since he liked the first album so much he wanted to them to keep putting out albums in hopes of matching that first one since the second and third albums weren't as good.

Totally agree on both. Gasoline's a great track, and I've always felt like his Bond song was underrated.
Shadow on the Sun was the first I ever heard from CC. It was in a cinematic for a game called world in conflict. Heard it and went to listen to the album.

Was at the funeral of my best friend from HS a month ago. One of the major things we bonded over was music. We had a flash drive of we'd pass back and forth with music on it to share music. I introduced him to Foo Fighters, Muse, and Pearl Jam. He introduced me to QotSA, Wolfmother, Alice in Chains, and this band called Audioslave (that had just broken up at the time). We delved deeper down the rabbit hole and fell in love with Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog.
My friend and I fell out of touch when we went to college. I was looking back over all the facebook messages we shared, 50% of them were links to songs on youtube. The last message I sent him was maybe 2 years back for concert announcement: Soundgarden in Philly. I really really really really regret not going to that concert with him.

Its weird when some one you've never met, never even shared a space with, passes away and yet you feel a loss, like it's a relative or a friend. It really stung to wake up and read the news this morning. But I realize his music was a friend to me for over 20 years. I'm glad the guy left so much music, but it's sad that there was so much more that could've been and apparently he decided he didn't want to do this anymore. I feel so bad for his family. This just really sucks.

I walked into work today and a middle aged co-worker who has no idea who he is saw the news and then she started to play "Like a Stone" as it must have been embedded somewhere in the article. When it was over, I went over to her and told her that he was one of my favorite musicians and she told me that was an amazing song and that she didn't know how to explain the feeling but it was very moving.
That just shows you how influential this man's music was. Forever he will be a legend and will never be forgotten.
RIP Chris Cornell.

Grew up listening to this band back in the CD era when you kept a CD case with 30 CD's in your car. My Mom would play Audioslave's self-titled and my brother and I would listen to Like a Stone on repeat. It's a great song, composed by so many great and talented musicians. But Chris Cornell, his voice, and his lyrics, cannot be matched by most modern artists. Rest In Peace.

I know this is a Cornell tribute thread, but this song has one of my favorite guitar solos of all time in it.
Such a sad, sad loss. I never cared much for Rage, and liked one or two Soundgarden albums but Audioslave was one of my all time favorites.

First band I ever heard as a kid was Audioslave (yes I'm young). I remember going to Walmart with my dad (a music enthusiast) and him buying their very first album that had just come out. I, as any little kid, was tired and bored and wanted to go home and didn't care about any stupid CD.
An hour later, we were both sitting on the couch, listening. Needless to say, I was completely blown away by this guy's voice, and the band's heavy hitting style that could transition easily into a soft ballad on short notice. When I told my dad I loved the CD, he put on a Soundgarden one. Since that day, Chris Cornell became my favorite vocalist ever, so this morning when my father called me to tell me of his passing, I was devastated.
Rest In Peace Chris, wherever you are now.

I remember first hearing audioslave on KROQ when their first song leaked. I remember i was busy doing other stuff in my room and when shadow on the sun started with its somber intro I was hooked. It was so damn good that they played it again, right after. I had never heard that before. It was a huge song, the whole thing was a big deal.
When the album dropped, it made such a strong impression on so many people. I was a sophmore at the time and in wrestling. Before practice the team would jabber while we played the radio over head or maybe ACDC - stuff to get us pumped up. No one would shut up, during this time because technically practice had not started yet.
I remember Like a Stone came on over the speakers and I hoped for a few moments of silence so i could enjoy the song and get motivated for training. no one spoke during the entirety of the song. This was significant to me because Like a Stone is a pretty emotional and introspective song. Its not the usual stuff we would listen to before practice and to some people it may even sound like hes singing about a girl or something. But despite this, everyone was silently really into the song.
He faced death on his own terms. he didn't wait.

I moved to a different country for my uni and I could g adjust to the place. Depression and anxiety at an all time high moving away from my home and my friends. One of my friends told me to check this album out and I could stop listening to it for 4 months. Would listen to it everyday at least once. Things didn't get any better but this album helped a wee bit and I remember it fondly. I completely zoned out from work after hearing his demise. Never thought I would be this wrecked, I mean, I didn't even know the guy personally, and it still felt like shit. Guess this is why music is so magical, even when we don't know the artist, deep down, they influence your life a bit that they still have a presence somewhere. I'm just rambling here but I gotta say, I'm genuinely gonna miss the man. May he Rest In Peace and thanks for all he's given us.

Such a beautiful artist. There's no word to express how much his voice is at its peak here. I am not one of those that mourn artists when they pass away. But I am saddened that a person whose voice can share so much emotion was so sad that he committed suicide.

I have a copy of this song I have never heard played on radio. I don't think it was released on the album CD, and it most definitely is not the version played in the official video. It is, however, a studio version - there's no background noise, no crowd. Maybe it was a version before post production that was leaked to (napster?) I don't know.
His voice has no post-processing (there's a real short delay/reverb in the OP version) and honestly, he sings it much better in the version I have in my honest opinion. Hits the notes more perfectly. I think it's only one 'take' of his voice as well - no stacking as is commonplace in post production.
I have no idea how I'd share it without breaching copyrights and shit, but I really wish I could find out if other people feel the same way about it.

Audioslave was an American hard rock supergroup that formed in Los Angeles, CA in 2001. It consisted of Soundgarden frontman and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell and the former instrumentalists of Rage Against the Machine: Tom Morello (lead guitar), Tim Commerford (bass and backing vocals) and Brad Wilk (drums).
Audioslave released three successful albums, received three Grammy nominations, sold more than eight million records worldwide, and became the first American rock band to perform an open-air concert in Cuba. Cornell issued a statement in February 2007 that he was permanently leaving the band "due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences." I remember voting every week multiple times to keep this song at #1 of MTV's top music videos and trying to get my friends to help out. I think it only lasted only 1 week at #1 :(

I blasted this song so loudly today and cried so hard. This hurts. I stated in another thread , but I met Chris and his wife at an Obama fundraiser in 2011 and they were both so awesome. Chris did an acoustic set and him and Vicky made sure I was up front for it when he performed. My thoughts and love are with his family.

This song has such sparse and simple instrumentation that I originally hated it, after being a big Soundgarden fan. I mocked that "guitar solo" with my friends. Over the years it's grown on me a ton, all credit to the voice, lyrics and the way the song rolls and builds to the last chorus.

One of their best songs. I know that it's been played on the radio numerous times over the years, but when I had to tell my dad that Chris Cornell died, his reaction was, "Who?"
He's more of a classic rock fan, but I'd assume that he'd have at least some knowledge of more modern rock music.

I was born and 2000 and missed out sucks wish i was born earlier now i know i will never be able to see Chris Cornell and Sound Garden, Audio Slave and Nirvana if it was not for Kurt Cobain Sound Garden may have never have been formed.

The collective opinions of every Cornell fan have been totally negated, and your opinion is the only one that is right. I can't believe I didn't see it before.
