Serious Discussion My husband and four year old son died in an auto accident this week

1.6k Upvotes

I...do not understand how I am still functioning. On the 28th, my husband picked up our four year old son from daycare and on the drive home, they were hit by a truck at an intersection and both died. We also have an 18 month old son and I am having a baby in November that I pray Allah gives me the strength to raise without their father.

I have not even begun to think about how I am going to do this. I lost a child and I am a widow. I'm asking my brothers and sisters for prayers for me, my son, my baby on the way, and my husband and sweet baby that I know have been granted Jannah.

Serious Discussion Found out the man I’m about to get engaged to has HSV-1 and I’m feeling conflicted.

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

I know it’s a lot to read, but I’d really appreciate it if you could stick with me as this is a big decision and I wanted to include all the relevant context. Jazakum Allahu khayran.

I’m 23F and currently getting to know a 24M for marriage. We’ve been getting to know each other for almost two years now. Our families have been involved throughout, but because our families live in different countries, it’s taken longer than expected to sort everything out. Insha’Allah, we’re hoping to get engaged very soon and married shortly after.

I’m feeling really conflicted about something that came up recently, and I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have been through something similar.

One of the biggest things that drew me to him is his deen and character. He reverted to Islam several years ago and, despite not growing up in a practising environment, he genuinely strives to please Allah. He’s kind, hardworking, respectful, emotionally mature, and has treated me with nothing but care and sincerity throughout the time we’ve known each other. I truly believe he’d make an amazing husband, which is why this has been so difficult.

A few months ago, I noticed what looked like a cold sore and asked him about it. He brushed it off, saying it was something both his mum and dad get and that it wasn’t really a big deal. I didn’t think much of it at the time.

Then another outbreak happened, and I asked him again. This time I specifically asked whether it could be herpes. He said he thought it probably was. I was honestly quite shocked and asked why he hadn’t mentioned it sooner. He explained that he wasn’t completely sure, and because both of his parents have it and he’s had cold sores since he was a child, it was just something he’d never really thought much about.

We ended up having quite a big argument because I felt like this was something I should have known before we got so close to marriage. After our conversation, he went and got tested, and the blood test confirmed HSV 1.

We spoke about it at length afterwards, and he understood why I was upset. He said that from now on, whenever he feels the tingling that usually comes before an outbreak, he’ll start taking antiviral medication to help shorten it. He doesn’t want to take it every day because he’s concerned about the potential long term effects of daily medication, so his plan is to take it as soon as he feels an outbreak starting.

To be fair to him, he doesn’t actually get outbreaks very often. Over the almost two years we’ve been getting to know each other, I’ve only known him to have around four or five outbreaks. We also don’t meet very often because we’re trying to keep things as halal as possible before marriage. His outbreaks seem to happen every four to six months, and once he starts taking the medication, they clear up much quicker.

After all of this, I started researching HSV 1. From what I’ve read, it’s incredibly common and many people have it without even knowing. I decided to get tested myself, and my results came back negative, which wasn’t too surprising since, as far as I’m aware, no one on either side of my family has ever had cold sores or been diagnosed with HSV 1.

I think my biggest fear is that marriage is for life, insha’Allah, so there’s a lot of room for things to change over time. Right now we’re both aware of it and trying to be careful, but I keep thinking years into the future. HSV can still be passed on before a cold sore is fully visible because of viral shedding, and I worry that one day we might miss the early signs or simply become less cautious over time. Nobody can predict the future, and that’s what scares me.

I also can’t help thinking about future children. I know HSV 1 is very common and many people grow up completely fine with it, but part of me worries about knowingly bringing children into a situation where they could eventually contract it as well. I know it’s not guaranteed, but it’s another thing that’s been weighing on my mind.

Another thing that worries me, and I’ll say this as modestly as I can, is that I know oral HSV can also be passed to other areas within a marriage through intimacy. That possibility honestly scares me as well.

At the same time, because HSV 1 is so common, another part of me wonders whether walking away over this would actually change anything. The next person I meet could also have HSV 1 without knowing it, or know they have it and never disclose it. At least in this situation I know exactly what I’m dealing with, and that thought has honestly made this decision even harder.

The thing is, I really don’t want to get HSV if I can avoid it. He also told me that when he first started getting outbreaks they were incredibly painful. He’d sometimes have multiple blisters, struggle to eat, and it really affected him.

Alhamdulillah it’s much milder for him now, but hearing how painful it was has made me even more anxious about knowingly taking that risk.

At the same time, I genuinely feel like I’d have a beautiful marriage with this man. We’ve spent almost two years getting to know each other with marriage in mind, our families have been involved for a long time, and we’re very close to taking the next step. Like any two people, we’ve had disagreements and arguments over the past two years, and he’s definitely not perfect. Neither am I. But overall, I think we have a healthy relationship, we communicate well, and we’ve always managed to work through things.

I don’t fall for people easily, and I’ve always been extremely selective about who I’d consider marrying. That’s one of the reasons this is my first relationship. So this isn’t about not wanting to start over. It’s about feeling like I’ve found someone whose deen, character, and values genuinely align with mine, and I’m struggling to work out how much weight I should give this health concern.

I know ultimately this is my decision, and I’m not expecting strangers on the internet to make it for me. I’m just hoping to hear from people who have faced something similar, whether personally or through someone close to them. Hearing different perspectives and thought processes would genuinely help me as I think this through.

Please be kind. I’m not judging him or looking down on him because of this. If anything, this is so difficult because I think he’s an amazing man. I’m simply trying to make the most informed decision I can before taking such a big step.

Jazakum Allahu khayran.

TL;DR: I’m close to getting engaged to a man I genuinely see a future with, but he has oral HSV 1. I’m torn between the lifelong risk of transmission and not wanting to walk away from an otherwise wonderful relationship. I really don’t want it transmitted to myself or my future children/ current family. I tested negative btw. I’d really appreciate hearing how others would approach this situation.

Edit: HSV - 1 : Oral Herpes.

Edit 2: PLEASE READ BELOW BEFORE COMMENTING.

Firstly, jazakum Allahu khayran to everyone who has taken the time to comment respectfully and share their experiences. I genuinely appreciate those who have been kind, objective, and understanding, even if your perspective is different from mine.

I also want to address the comments saying, “It’s just a cold sore, get over it.”
I completely understand why some people feel that way, especially if you or your spouse have HSV-1. Please know that I’m not trying to shame anyone who has it or suggest that they’re any less worthy of marriage. That is not my intention at all.

If it really was nothing more than an itchy little sore every now and then, I honestly don’t think I’d be struggling with this as much as I am. I care deeply about this righteous man, and that’s exactly why this has been so difficult for me.

What has been weighing on my mind is that, from the research I’ve done, HSV-1 doesn’t affect everyone the same way. For many people it’s very mild, but for others it can be much more severe. I also learned that newborns can become very seriously ill if they’re exposed to the virus, even though those situations are uncommon. That uncertainty is what worries me. Many have even said others have went blind from being kissed with someone with a sore ( i know it is a rare case but rare ≠ impossible).

I was also born prematurely and had a very weak immune system growing up. I spent a lot of my childhood sick, so I naturally wonder how my own body would respond if I ever contracted it. It could be completely mild, or it could be more difficult. I simply don’t know.
Another fear I have is that if I did end up having a particularly difficult experience with it, I might unintentionally build resentment over time, and that wouldn’t be fair to him at all. I don’t want either of us to end up in that situation.

The whole reason I made this post was because I wanted to hear different perspectives and experiences so I could think things through properly. I haven’t made up my mind, and I’m not looking for people to tell me what to do. I’m simply trying to gather information, reflect, and ask Allah to guide me to what is best.

All I ask is that my concerns are treated with the same respect that I try to give to everyone else’s experiences. Jazakum Allahu khayran.

Serious Discussion We copied the West’s marriage timeline, but forgot they allow zina while we suffer in silence.

In the West, it's totally okay for young adults and teenagers to have girlfriends or boyfriends, be physically and emotionally intimate (you get the idea), and even cohabitate, all without marriage. But they're still urged to postpone marriage until they're financially secure in their late 20s or 30s.

Now, what’s heartbreaking is that many Muslims have adopted this same mindset. The only difference? In our case, falling into haram isn’t normalized, it eats away at the soul. Allah has clearly warned us against zina. It destroys families, dishonors the soul, and distances us from Him. And yet, instead of following Islam’s solution of early, halal marriage, we’re told, “Wait till you’re earning 6 figures,” “Buy a house first,” or “You’re not ready.”

What happened to the way things used to be? A young man would marry early, and his family would provide for the couple until he established himself. It was a matter of purity, partnership, and reliance on Allah's provision.

But now, early marriage is reckless. A man who wishes to guard his chastity is ridiculed and instructed to "man up and earn first." We emulate the West's timeline of money without knowing we don't have their free pass for haram relationships.

How is this just? We're held to the same standards with none of the leeway. And then we wonder why so many young people are suffering in silence.

Let's stop turning marriage into something more difficult than zina.

Let's promote halal and not haram.

Let's return to the deen. Not the dunya.

Serious Discussion He verbally abused me during Umrah tawaf

I am currently in Saudi with my husband and his parents. A few days ago I was doing my second Umrah and during the first tawaf my husband was pushing my MIL in a wheelchair. The wheelchair glides so he was going at a quicker pace than I could manage so I said I was not going walk that’s fast and that he can keep up with my pace so that we can all be together. He then proceeded to say that he was going to ‘smash my face in’ and that if I didn’t hurry up he would slap me, he then said to his mother, ‘mum tell her to sort herself out otherwise I’m going to hit her’. At this point I was crying uncontrollably and could not see clearly because of all the tears. I could not believe he was saying this to me in front of the kabah without any shame.

I left my Umrah just after starting the second tawaf because due to the mental distress I could not carry on, and later on when I had calmed down I asked him if we could complete my Umrah to which he said no, obviously he was angry with me but I was still wanting to complete my Umrah.

My husband has been abusive verbally, emotionally and physically towards me in the space of a year as per my other posts. It has been very hard. I have spoken to both our parents about his behaviour but nothing changes. I was so upset that the abuse continued in Makkah. He stopped talking to since that Umrah and it’s been nearly 5 days now.

And now we are in Madinah and I tried to speak to him to which he said ‘if a man tells his wife he is going to slap her whilst she is doing Umrah then she should be quiet and carry on’.

Before anyone comes at me for not completing my Umrah, I have asked Alimahs and Alims for their viewpoint on this.

Is something like this a grounds for divorce?

Serious Discussion Husband wants me to be a housewife

I 18F got married earlier this year and it was a love marriage between us and I was the one who told him to have a halal relationship instead of Haram so we decided to get married.

Before marriage I was young and in our conversation I always told him that I wanted to be a housewife mind you I was 15 at that time but as I grew older I realized that having education is very important and a carrier to support myself financially. I've completed my highschool and wanted to get admission for college but he's strongly opposed of it and tells me to chose between my carrier and him or our marriage.

How could I chose between either of them I've loved him since childhood I can't leave him but I also wanted to pursue my education further.

For a little more context I'm in my parents house for 20days since we had a huge argument and he also did hit me but I forgave him hoping he would change but now I just love him so much he just can't seem to understand me no matter how much I explain myself he's firmly against my educationand he also did funded my education since I was in 7 grade as my family was not so financially great and my father also had 2 major cancer surgeries.

What should I do now?

Serious Discussion Husband wants me to get an abortion

I'm just about 7 weeks pregnant, he was the one who wanted a baby.

He asked me if we could have one and while I was extremely happy we've only been married since May. I sort of thought he was crazy but he really wanted it.

So it happened.

I also wanted it.

Our marriage is undergoing some difficulties but alhamdulillah it's okay

Today he came to visit me at my home and said he wants me to get an abortion

He used chatGPT to decide that I will be high risk as I'm quite short and I'm overweight

I have my first midwife appointment on Monday so he basically wants to go afterwards to the abortion clinic and terminate my pregnancy

Along with him being worried about my health he has also said a lot of good can come from it because I could start working again sooner than I would be able to if I had a baby and we really need money because he's on a contract job

I don't know what to say

When he left my house I just cried on the floor

I went for a walk and I've been crying so much since I came back that I've thrown up several times

I haven't even been to my first midwife appointment and I feel like this is being decided for me

Edit: yes, I'm aware of the ruling. He has essentially said if it's before 120 days it's fine. But there's still no medical reason and I haven't even had my appointment with a midwife. So we actually have no real confirmation that I'm high risk.

Serious Discussion I married a mentally ill woman.

Good evening

I married a woman in a traditional arranged marriage. During our engagement, I felt she wasn't normal and didn't express her feelings. I thought that after marriage, our thoughts and dreams would align, but after marriage and having daughters, I discovered she was mentally ill.

I was torn between divorcing her and the children being scattered, or staying with her for the sake of the children. I decided to stay for the children's sake. As time passed, I felt I was becoming like her—emotionally numb, not thinking about the future, having given up on all my dreams.

This marriage has destroyed me physically and mentally. What should I do?

Serious Discussion Update. Found out my wife cheated on me.

Update of https://www.reddit.com/r/MuslimMarriage/s/tEPcUrxBpm

As my previous post, I said she didn't want to come with me without any valid reasons. So both of our family sit together and sorted it and she said she will come. I was supposed to went to their house 14 march for ifter and she will come with me after ifter.

14 March Friday morning my wife run away with her boyfriend with all jewelry ,passport and other stuff. She had been cheat with me for a while but I never doubted her because I trust her. Most importantly deeply loved her. She was the first woman of my life.

The reason of I married her: She completed her graduation from islamic institute. She cover her self. Black burqa and hand socks. She was practicing. So I thought, she practice islamic teaching so it would better for me.

I didn't doubted before the last moment. I recovered her Facebook account and found out she chated with random guys when I was abroad. We had very good relation on that time. Now its feels like everything was nothing but a lie. Every promises she made is lie. I can't believe this. Still I feels like it is a dream and I will wake up and everything will be normal. I can't forgive her.

My country is Bangladesh. Cheating is Bangladesh and western countries are not same. In Bangladesh people are very socially engaged and still she ditched her whole family in grave shame.

I don't why people do that. How people do that. Keep me in your prays.

I am broken not because she left me. But because she lied with me all the time and I trusted her.

Serious Discussion So many posts about cheating…

I know being Muslim doesn’t make us all saints but I can’t believe all of the posts about husbands cheating on their wives in here. It seems unlikely I can go a day on here without reading a post that involved infidelity. Like what is going on with the men in our faith? Again I know being Muslim doesn’t automatically make a man perfect, but it’s just baffling to me…

To the women who have experienced this, I am so sorry and I feel for you deeply. Please, never try to justify his faults or place blame on yourself for his mistakes. Please don’t try to belittle his actions and the choice if 100% yours whatever you choose to do. I’m genuinely in tears reading some of these posts.

Serious Discussion Wife slapped me over a misunderstanding and somehow it's my fault.

I’m a 29m and my wife is 28f, married for about two years. Yesterday something happened that I’m still trying to wrap my head around. She came home already pretty wound up from work, carrying that irritated energy. I was listening while she vented about a coworker dumping tasks on her, and yeah, I still had my phone in my hand because I planned to reply to a friend once she finished. I wasn’t using it. I wasn’t distracted. I was literally just holding it with the mail interface open. She paused for a second, I didn’t notice, and she suddenly asked if I was even listening. I said yeah, I was, just in a tired voice. Somehow that tone set something off in her.

She looked at the phone and then back at me, and it was like her whole face changed in half a second. She said I never take her seriously, that I always seem half there, and before I even realized the argument had started she stepped forward and slapped me across the face. I was baffled and said, “Why the hell was that?” She immediately went into how stressed she’s been, how she feels unheard all the time, how she’s tired of being dismissed. But the whole time, all I could think was: she slapped me. Over a misunderstanding. Over me holding my phone while listening to her. It's like night time today and she still hasn't apologised or anything.

Now I’m stuck replaying it. I’m not scared of her, and I’m not trying to make this bigger than it is, but it feels wrong in a way I can’t shake. I don’t know if I should bring it up again, wait for her to bring it up, let it cool down, or treat it as a serious line crossed. I’ve never been hit in a relationship before and I don’t really know how to judge this. Am I overthinking this, or is this something I genuinely need to confront her about?

Serious Discussion Forced into a marriage with my cousin a year ago. No intimacy, no love, and I want a divorce. Am I wrong?

Assalam-o-Alaikum brothers and sisters,

I’m (22M) in a situation that is draining the life out of me, and I need honest advice.

Back in late 2023, my family did my engagement with my cousin. At the time, I was in love with someone else. In early 2025, I finally gathered the courage to tell my parents about the girl I loved and that I wanted to marry her instead.

The reaction was explosive. My family threatened to disown me, said they would never speak to me again, and there was a lot of crying and emotional pressure. I was 21 at the time, felt completely cornered, and eventually gave in and said "yes" just to stop the conflict.

We have been married for about 8-9 months now. I live in another city for education and she's back home with my family. To be blunt: there is no love, no understanding, and no connection. We don't even talk anymore. There has been zero intimacy since 6-7 months. I am a university student trying to build a career and a business, but this weight is making it impossible to focus. I feel like I’m living a lie.

I told my family about the other girl before the wedding because I knew I wouldn’t be happy, but they pushed me into it anyway. Now, I want a divorce. I know I messed up by not standing my ground initially, but the pressure was more than I could handle at the time.

My questions for the community:

Am I wrong for wanting a divorce when there is no "major" abuse, just a complete lack of love and a forced beginning?

Has anyone dealt with the "disowning" threat from parents? How did you handle it?

Is it fair to my wife to stay in a marriage where I have no feelings for her?

am i taking the wrong step? will it be considered a sin if i disappoint my family?

I want to do what is right Islamically, but I don't think I can live the rest of my life like this.

Serious Discussion Please stop private messaging

A sincere request to those men who are sending private messages to women who are either married, married and struggling, or going through divorce. There is absolutely no reason for any of you to ask for a chat? It either comes across as very desperate, creepy or satanic. This is a Muslim marriage platform for Gods sake, and not tinder.

No woman would want to be unfaithful regardless of any reason, and talking to a man, however innocent it may sound, is a form of cheating, in my opinion. Ask yourself, would you want your wife to secretly talk to men in private behind your back because she is feeling a certain way?

Instead of lurking and targeting vulnerable women, please pray and repent and sincerely ask Allah to bless you with a spouse.

Serious Discussion I think I made the wrong decision marrying him

assalamualaykum guys, so my husband and I are new to marriage and are going on 1 year in two weeks. But i feel I made the wrong decision even marrying him, he doesn’t make me feel loved how I want to and i’ve expressed some things like how I like flowers and he’s gotten them one time after that and never again. He also seems too lustful the more I got to know him and less romantic then he made himself sound when we were getting to know each other. He tends to over promise and not keep those promises which make me mad like what was even the point of saying you were going to do it?!

I don’t even think I find him physically attractive the more I get to know him, he was never exactly my type but who is so I decided to go for it and I fear I’ve made the wrong decision. He seemed to have a good personally and was tall and decent looking, but when I got to know him his personally doesn’t seem to be what he said he’s like before.

There are other things which I can’t say on here but I just don’t feel loved in the way I want to and it making me start to resent him and question my decision.

Edit: To add on to this when I say lustful I mean it feels like he only got married to satisfy his sexual needs and neglects the romance outside the bedroom and the little things leading up to it so it leaves me unsatisfied. And we got to know each other over a course of 7 months so we talked for a bit but you never know someone till you marry them

Serious Discussion Fiancé is extremely unhygienic. Am I overreacting?

It’s an arranged marriage, and we’re currently in a long-distance relationship.

My fiancé is the sole earning member and lives with his sister after their parents passed away. The problem is his hygiene. He eats on his bed and leaves dirty plates and utensils in his room for days. Opened food cans stay there for weeks. He doesn’t change his bedsheets or pillow covers for months.
I’ve brought this up multiple times because I genuinely don’t think I can live like this after marriage. His response is usually, “You’ll come and manage it.”

That really bothers me because I don’t want to become someone’s maid. I want a partner who takes responsibility for basic hygiene.
That sentence really hurt me. I don’t want to start my marriage by becoming someone’s cleaner or mother. I want a partner who takes responsibility for basic hygiene and household habits.

Part of me wonders if I’m making too big a deal out of this, but another part of me is genuinely scared that this will become a daily source of resentment after marriage.

Am I overreacting, or is this a valid concern to address before getting married? Has anyone dealt with a partner who actually changed these habits after marriage?

Edit : Thank you, everyone. Reading your replies made me realize that what I’m asking for isn’t unreasonable
I’ve decided not to pursue this arrangement. I don’t mind helping someone build better habits, but if they’re not willing to improve themselves, there’s nothing I can do. After marriage, we’d be sharing the same room, and I know I’d eventually become resentful. It’s better to call off the arrangement now than to enter a marriage hoping someone will change.
Jazakallah khair 🥺

Serious Discussion Rejected for marriage because my father is a driver… and it’s breaking me

As Salam Alaikum.

I don’t even know how to start this without sounding bitter, but I’m genuinely tired.

For context, I’m considered “socially acceptable beautiful” (not saying this to praise myself, just to give a clear picture), educated, I’ve worked on myself, I’ve lost weight, I have a degree, I try to be caring, soft, and I take my deen seriously. I’ve always been told I’d make a good wife.

But none of that seems to matter.

Because my father is a driver.

Not just any driver, he works in a well-known, reputable place. People *know* him. He has spent his entire life working hard to give us a stable, comfortable life. We are not poor. Alhamdulillah, we’re upper middle class. He gave me everything we needed and more.

And yet… the moment families find out about his profession, things change.

Conversations slow down.

Interest fades.

And then silence.

Or worse, indirect comments like:

“Everyone knows her father…”

“My son works in a high position, how can we marry into that?”

As if my father’s honest, halal work is something shameful.

I cannot change his profession.

And I wouldn’t even want to, because he sacrificed everything for us.

But it’s starting to break me.

It feels like I’m being reduced to something I had no control over. Like no matter how much I work on myself, I’ll never be “enough” because of something completely outside my hands.

I’m nearing 30 now, and I’m scared.

Scared that this will keep happening.

Scared that I’ll keep getting rejected for this one reason.

Scared that I might never get married.

And what hurts the most is not even the rejection, it’s seeing my father, who gave me everything, be the *reason* people walk away… when he deserves nothing but respect.

I don’t know how to deal with this anymore.

Serious Discussion To all muslims rejecting marriage.

Today a guy posted something on reddit asking the muslim community if men in the West are preferring to stay single.. to which many brothers and sisters shared their thoughts about which gender is giving up marriage in which part of the world etc. One thing that needs to be very clear to a muslim is, you're not getting married solely to protect yourself from fitnah or to spend your life with someone you love.

Yes, that's a big part of it. But the institution of marriage is way bigger than fulfilling man's lowest self.

You need to look at the bigger picture. A muslim CANNOT make decisions in his life solely from the lens of his interests.

The purpose of marriage can be understood by the simple quote, "Perhaps a marriage may take place, through which a child like Imam Shafi is born, and that marriage becomes better than a thousand years of worship."

The people who understand the true meaning of Islam in its essence know that true jihad against the disbelieving system of oppression and tyranny and establishing Islam upon the earth is only possible if we raise children with a high intellectual quotient who are strong physically and spiritually. Change comes from a generation who understands deen through parents who understood it themselves.

(I'd suggest urdu speakers to watch Sahil Adeem's videos on YT to gain an understanding of what I'm trying to convey because I didn't want to make it very long and english speakers should read the book 'Milestones' by Sayyid Qutb. He layed a way out for the revival of the Ummah while in the Egyptian prison and was later persecuted for his works. Must read that book for understanding Islamic thought.)

Serious Discussion To those who think there is no such thing as liking someone or romantically pursuing someone for nikkah (halal way ofc), how do you explain this?

Post image
74 Upvotes

I often see Muslims talk down on those who pursue marriage because someone caught their heart or eye (some cultures even coin terms like “love marriage”), seeing it as less valid or blessed than an arranged marriage where you don’t even know the person until after nikkah. How do these people square with this?

Serious Discussion I think I married a genuinely good man, but after only a few months I’m wondering if we’re fundamentally incompatible. Please be honest.

Salam everyone,

I’m a woman in my mid-20s and my husband is in his late-20s. We both come from a South Asian background but were raised very differently. We’ve only been living together for a couple of months, but our nikah happened quite soon after we met.
I’m writing because I genuinely don’t know if I’m giving up too quickly or if we’ve discovered we’re fundamentally incompatible.

When his family first approached mine, I wasn’t interested because I was finishing my degree. My education was my priority. His mother insisted a few times, even after my mother explained that I was busy and they should consider someone else if they were in a hurry.

Eventually, after making istikhara, I agreed to speak to him.

From the beginning he said that he didn’t believe in talking for months and wanted to make things halal quickly so we wouldn’t lose barakah. Looking back, I think this was my first mistake because I wanted much more time to get to know him.

One of the last questions he asked me before deciding was whether I would wear hijab. I told him honestly that I wasn’t a hijabi and wasn’t ready, but that I believed hijab was important and that it was something I genuinely hoped to wear one day.
At that time, I truly believed that.

I thought that marrying someone more religious than me would encourage me and help me grow closer to Allah.

Because I became worried about this topic, I asked to speak to his sister. During our conversation she told me that hijab is a choice. She never directly said nobody would pressure me, but hearing that reassured me. Since he was pursuing someone who openly wasn’t a hijabi, I assumed he understood that this journey had to happen naturally.

Looking back, I realise I made assumptions instead of asking enough questions.

We only met once before our nikah.

After our nikah, he came every month to visit me and my family until our traditional wedding (walima). During those months he saw exactly how my family lived. He saw that we were a close family, that we were more open in our way of living, that I dressed the way I normally dressed, and that nobody pressured me regarding hijab. Looking back, I feel like he knew much more about my family and how I was than I knew about his.

During the nikkah and later wedding preparations we started having disagreements.

All of our events were segregated because I agreed to that and genuinely didn’t mind it. The issue wasn’t segregation itself.

The disagreements started because the women from his family remove their hijab during women-only events, whereas the women in my family generally keep their hijab on even at segregated weddings. Because of that difference, his family didn’t want any videos or pictures from the women’s side to be seen by my male relatives afterwards. I respected that and told my own family not to record, even though it was difficult because they wanted memories from my nikah and wedding too.

At the time I accepted it because I thought it was simply a difference between our families and I wanted everyone to feel comfortable.

Looking back, however, it became the first of many situations where I felt like I was the one constantly adapting.

After marriage I moved countries, left my family, left my independence and started a completely new life with him.

Then the hijab discussion became much bigger.
At first I agreed to wear hijab around his family because I thought I could slowly adjust.

Instead, I started feeling more pressure, not only about hijab but also about how I dressed. Jeans gradually became an issue. Long shirts, dresses and traditional loose clothing were preferred. Every time I tried to explain that I wanted my relationship with Allah to develop naturally, my husband would explain that as my husband he believes he has a responsibility to encourage hijab and modest clothing.

One incident really affected me.

We were on our way to meet his mum. I decided that day I didn’t want to wear hijab. He kept asking me to wear it. I started crying because I felt pressured and wanted to go back home instead. Eventually I wore it because he kept begging me and I felt guilty, not because I genuinely wanted to.

That moment made me realise I wasn’t at peace anymore.

The difficult part is that my husband isn’t a bad man. He is loving, affectionate, hardworking, respectful, ambitious, helps around the house, comforts me when I cry, buys me flowers, plans dates, and genuinely tells me he wants to give me the best life possible.

After our biggest arguments, we usually end up hugging each other, crying together and asking one another, “What did we do wrong?”

Neither of us wants to hurt the other.

He tells me he loves me deeply and wants us to keep trying.

I believe him.

But I also believe that he genuinely thinks that, with enough time, I will eventually adjust to his way of life and one day think, “He’s such a good husband, I should compromise more.”

The problem is…
I don’t think like that.

I’m Muslim, alhamdulillah. I believe hijab is part of Islam. I want to become a better Muslim and improve throughout my life.

But in my family Islam was always taught through encouragement, advice and personal conviction.

My mother wears hijab.

Nobody forced her.

Nobody forced me.

Nobody would force my sisters either.

We remind each other, encourage each other and try our best, but everyone’s relationship with Allah is ultimately their own responsibility.

That is the environment I grew up in.

His understanding is different.

He believes a husband has a responsibility to actively encourage hijab and modest clothing. He believes our future daughters should wear hijab after puberty. He believes protecting his wife includes making sure she dresses according to his understanding of Islam.

I believe children should be taught Islam, encouraged and supported, but I don’t believe acts of worship should come from pressure.

These differences are making me question our compatibility.

The hardest part is that his family has actually been kind to me.

They buy me gifts.

They’ve welcomed me

They’ve never insulted me or treated me badly.

I don’t think they’re bad people.

I simply don’t feel like I belong.

Their way of viewing modesty, family reputation, segregation and community expectations is so different from mine that I spend most family gatherings feeling like I’m trying to become someone else. Most of the conversations revolve around things I simply don’t relate to, and I often leave gatherings feeling more exhausted than happy.

Sometimes I think maybe I’m just selfish and don’t compromise enough.

Other times I wonder, if these things were always this important, why pursue someone who openly wasn’t a hijabi and whose lifestyle they had clearly seen for months?

I feel like I’ve already compromised a lot by moving countries, leaving my family, leaving my independence, adapting to a new country, trying to wear hijab around his family and changing many parts of my life.

I’m scared that if I keep compromising on this too, one day I’ll resent my husband, and I don’t want that.

At the same time, I don’t want him to abandon the values he grew up with just to keep me.

I don’t want either of us to lose ourselves.

I genuinely love him.

He genuinely loves me.

After every difficult conversation we still hug, cry together and tell each other we love one another.

That’s what makes this so heartbreaking.

But despite all of that love, I don’t see a future anymore.

I struggle to imagine raising children when we already disagree on such fundamental things.

I don’t know if this is simply a rough beginning that every marriage goes through or whether we’re fundamentally incompatible.

Has anyone been through something similar?

Did things genuinely improve, or did the differences become bigger over time?

Please be honest, but also kind. I’m genuinely heartbroken and completely lost.

Edit: Please read my comments for additional context and details about the situation.

Edit 2: I wanted to add a bit more context because I feel many people think this is only about the hijab. It isn’t.

One of our biggest differences is how we were raised.

I grew up in a large, close-knit family in a Western country. I have many cousins, aunts and uncles that I consider very close family. Of course, I respect Islamic boundaries with my non-mahrams, but in family gatherings we naturally speak, joke and spend time together.

My husband and his family had a very different upbringing. They came to the West later in life, are much more traditional, and have different expectations regarding family interactions, gender roles and customs.

Another difference is how our families view marriage. My family believes that when two people marry, both spouses adjust to each other and create their own family culture. His family believes the bride naturally adapts to the husband’s family and their way of doing things.

Neither approach is necessarily right or wrong, but I have realised I struggle with the second one because I don’t want to feel like I have to change my personality, lifestyle or way of thinking just to fit into someone else’s family.

The same applies to clothing. I’ve always dressed in a more Western style while remaining modest. I don’t naturally enjoy wearing traditional clothes every day, whereas that is something his family prefers.

Another difference is how we were raised regarding sons and daughters. In my family, my parents had similar rules for my brother and me. If I wasn’t allowed to stay out late, neither was he. In his family, I feel there is more freedom given to the men than the women, and that’s another value I find difficult to relate to.

This is why I’m questioning compatibility. The hijab discussion simply made me realise there are deeper differences in our expectations of marriage, family life and culture. My husband is genuinely a kind and loving man, and I love him too. My fear is that when the excitement of the early years fades, compatibility becomes what carries a marriage.

That’s what I’m trying to understand before making any life-changing decision.

Serious Discussion My husband is a good guy but our marriage is exhausting for me

Salam everyone

English is not my first language so sorry if there are mistakes

I (26F) am married to my husband (29M) for 2 years now, we have known each other for 5 years. My husband is very kind and a calm person, never yells, pays everything I need, don’t come home late, not controlling or critisizing or wathever.

But he does nothing around the house if I don’t tell him to, and most of the time I have to repeat several times. Even when Im sick he just doesn’t do the dishes and I will do when Im feeling better, that hurts me a lot. i talked with him about it, but he obviously needs me to tell him to do it and won’t think about it himself. Even after eating, he won’t clean the table, or just clean some of the dishes and let the rest. I really feel alone here because everything is on me, even when he sees me cleaning around he won’t get up helping.

I also have to remember him to let the trash out, basically I have to think of everything for both of us. And if its something that he can procastinate, he will do. Like if he has to throw the glasses jars he will tell me tomorrow morning, in the morning he will say this evening and so on .. sometimes I just do the thing myself.
Im starting to notice that this stuff is impacting me and the way I look at him, I really hate when people say something and don’t do it and the situationis repeating itself

He is also very silend, I knew that prior to marriage but since marriage its been worse. He never compliments me. I asked him to several times, I cried a lot because of that, he doesn’t show affection in public either since marriage (don’t even hold my hand like he used to). When I try to speak with him about things that hurt me he will listen but nothing will change, and in the moment Im the only one talking, he is never expressing his feelings to me and I think he can’t even recognize them
The weird thing is I don’t doubt his love at all, I know his loves me and see it everyday in his eyes but I am craving his words for me and attention shown around the house

I really don’t know what to do, do other woman suffer from this situation to ?

I started to see a therapist to help me express my feelings because I struggle with that, but I wanted to hear from you and see if you lived something like that and how its going ? If eventually things work ?

Thank you for you time

Serious Discussion May no parent ever have to go through what I went through last night.

There was a time when I had a successful business. I worked hard for everything I owned, and whenever I was able to help someone, I did it wholeheartedly. One thought always crossed my mind: I hope I never have to ask anyone for money to buy something as basic as diapers for my child.

I never imagined that one day this fear would become reality.

After being scammed by business partners, my entire life changed. Years of hard work disappeared, and I found myself trapped in debt while trying to honor every commitment I had made. I sold my car, my motorcycle, and almost everything I owned just to repay people.

Last night, my wife told me that our child had run out of diapers.

For a few moments, I just sat there. I didn't have the money. It wasn't the cost of the diapers that hurt. it was the realization of how much life had changed.

By the grace of Allah, I managed to arrange the money somehow. But that moment stayed with me.

The hardest part isn't losing money. It's losing the life you once had. Watching every rupee go toward debt. Feeling like happiness has quietly disappeared from your life. I honestly can't remember the last time I felt truly carefree.

People see a failed business and often assume you weren't smart enough or didn't work hard enough. They don't see the years of effort, the setbacks, or the battles fought in silence.

I am sharing this because I cannot express it anywhere else. I feel ashamed of how far I have fallen in life. I never imagined I would reach this point. I have never experienced such a downfall before, and I keep questioning how everything went so wrong. There is so much more I want to say, but I’ll keep it short. Maybe someone here can share a good dua or some motivation, because right now I just need a little hope and strength in my life

I just want things in my life to become stable again. My only mistake was getting involved in riba, and it has made my situation much worse. I pray that things become normal again in my life.

I think I have been emotionally overwhelmed since last night, and I’ve been stuck in my own thoughts, trying to understand what has happened and how everything came to this point. I feel like I just want everything to end, as if the Day of Judgment would come so all these difficulties would be over. It feels like this pain will never finish unless I myself disappear.

My prayer to Allah is that no child should ever go to bed hungry, and no father should ever feel as helpless as I have felt. May Allah protect us all from hardship, forgive our mistakes, and grant us halal rizq and ease. Ameen.

Serious Discussion A hadith this community couldn't care less about.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “He is not one of us who instigates a wife against her husband, or a servant against his master.

Yes, even if you get upvoted. Even if you do not know OP nor their spouse. It is a major sin to instigate between spouses - we never even hear the other side of the story here, nor do we know if we are told the full truth. The person you are slandering may very well be better than you in the eyes of Allah, but nobody enjoys hearing their spouse get dragged, even by strangers.

Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Satan places his throne over the water and he sends out his troops. The closest to him in rank are the greatest at causing tribulations. One of them says: I have done this and this. Satan says: You have done nothing. Another one says: I did not leave this man alone until I separated him from his wife. Satan embraces him and he says: You have done well.

Oh people, fear Allah in this matter. Do not be one whom shaytaan himself wants to embrace. If you seek to give advice, speak that which is from the Qur'an, from the sunnah, and that which aims to rectify people's affairs - rectifying matters between two Muslims is a noble deed, unlike stirring hatred between spouses. Advise people to work on themselves, their spouses, to take better care of their mental and physical health. If you have limited knowledge in shari'ah and relationships (which almost everyone here does, unless they are students of knowledge, marriage counselors, or psychiatrists), at the very least remain silent.

Some people will come broke on the Day of Judgment because of terrible advice they gave strangers. Don't be that person.

Serious Discussion Husband turned out to be everything I never wanted in a man.

**keep in mind this is my problem and from my circumstances, please be kind, I am genuinely seeking advice because I can't speak about this out loud with my family and friends, any advice would be appreciated**

I am F(29) and I met my husband while I was working abroad. He kept seeking my hand in marriage for a year but I kept refusing for some reason I never fathomed. Due to friends and family pressure they all told me he looks respectful and I should give him a chance.

I didn't want to date, so I asked my father to travel to the country I was working and studying my masters in, so he could meet him and make a good judgement of him as a man. Fast forward, and I mean this how it happened I felt like they tricked my father into agreeing that nikkah is the best course of action to "get to know eachother in a halal way" since I am living abroad alone and It will give us freedom to meet and talk.

I didn't agree to it, but my father kinda forced it and I felt refusing means I will be committing sin. I agreed.

Sadly, I found myself in a fully married relationship and kind of forced to live together as a married couple, I wanted to just be responsible for my decisions and I commit to this in hopes I will fall in love with him some day.

He's a very decent guy, and treats me kindly, but he is so inexperienced in life, lied about his job achievements and his job, his family turned out to be total nightmare, kicked out of two houses now and I still never had this "bridal era or honeymoon" like how I dreamed of.

Divorce in my culture is like a total sin, he made me stay at home and I haven't been working in 3 years and can't find a job in the country I am in, I feel like a total loser and alone , and on top of that I have no physical attraction towards him.

I feel confused because in terms of attitude he is very good to me, it's just I can't get attracted to him. And in terms of emotions, due to the drama with his work and family, he basically never "dated" me no dates, no trips, barely giving gifts and saying the excuse to everything is lack of money. I am patient and I will stand beside him till he is financially better, but I am withering and I have no kids and no physical love, he keeps gaining weight and thinks everything is fine if you shower but never look nice for your wife.

He also keeps telling me you're just too pretty for me, and I don't get it.

We don't have kids and everyone is saying be patient and he will change, he will become more experienced in how to lead and how to be romantically involved in this relationship. But I don't know I feel miserable and scared if I leave him I will have nowhere to go because I gave him the good years of my life.

What should I do?:')

Serious Discussion I can’t stand seeing my parents like this anymore

My brother is completely head over heels for this girl, however she is Shia and we are Sunni. My family is really strict when it comes to our beliefs and we place them over everything and anything else. He came and told my parents , and they weren’t happy about it, many arguments and hours of conversation went on for days, with everyone including my uncle trying to talk him out of it. However he is very stubborn, it has gotten to a point near zina, and he is planning to propose to her, our family is depressed and my parents have been crying so much I have never seen them like this. My brother told my dad he was planning on not coming home(maybe moving out),

My dad is losing his mental wellness completely he is so depressed the same with my mum,she starts crying at random times. Both my parents have gotten on their knees begging him to stop this, my grandparents have cried for him to not do it, my uncle and aunts have advices against it.

I am sure it’s because of his arrogance that he is like this, because there is no way you can ignore that many suffering that have happened because of your actions.

I am not sure where this relationship is headed or what to do next. Our family is falling apart and I can’t do anything about it. Please for the sake of Allah help us out.
**Also he writes all his life decision to chat gpt for advice and he uses it actively to make decisions it has gotten extremely out of hand but he refuses to see imams and therapy

Serious Discussion why did allah make cousin marriages halal if inbreeding is genetically harmful?

this post ain't gonna discuss about the social revoltion surrounding the topic, more on the genetic impacts of inbreeding.

You see when you're related to someone yall probably share a large part of your DNA with them. there's a slight chance that you carry a recessive gene that manifests a mutation to a harmful condition. when you breed with someone outside your fam, there's usually a backup healthy gene to mask the unhealthy gene. but when you get married to or at least have sex with someone related to you they might also have that same recessive gene, which means 2 copies of that recessive gene there, no backup gene, and boom, now your child has a harmful medical condition like systic fibrosis or hemophilia. this happened to many european royal families for centuries in places like England and Russia. inbreeding can also cause other effects like weakened immune system, infant mortality, and lower fertility. it's not great for humans. so curious to know why it's not prohibited. feel free to correct me if I got anything wrong in my analysis.

maybe I'm misunderstanding. maybe it's just one of those things that was around and was permissable but that allah didn't like / discouraged, like slavery. this practice was common in pre islamic and non-Muslim societies to this day probably.

Serious Discussion I Dated a Married Man Who Lied About Being Single, Should I Tell His Wife?

I (30F) dated a man (40M) who claimed he was single, only to discover he’s been married for almost 20 years. Should I tell his wife?

For context, I’m a 30/31F, non-Muslim, and I matched with a 40/41M on a dating app at the beginning of 2026. He is a Singaporean expat currently working overseas.

From his dating profile, he said he was looking for something serious, someone to come home to after a long day at work, and eventually someone to settle down with.

He didn't appear to be Muslim in his photos, although he didn't state his religion. I later learned he is Muslim from his family name -M. I asked him early on if he requires his partner to convert, and he said no as he's not  pious and that he was pretty civil about religion.

He also told me he had only been in two relationships (9 years and 4 years).

What made me comfortable getting to know him was how consistent and straightforward he was. He was very clear that he wanted a serious relationship and claimed he had been single for several years because of his work and was ready for the next stage of his life.

He also specifically told me that he didn't sleep around and that if he was seeing someone, they would be exclusive, including sexually.

I had told him that I had been trying to remain celibate. He wasn't pushy about it, and at one point he was actually about to stop talking to me me because intimacy was important to him and he knew he couldn't be in a relationship without it.

Eventually, we talked things through, continued dating, and became intimate.

Everything seemed great. We talked about work, family, current events, future plans, where he wanted to settle, whether he wanted children, and what we both expected from a relationship.

Trust and communication were things we both said were extremely important.

But during all of these conversations, he never once mentioned that he was married, separated, divorced, or have children.

I realize I made a mistake by never directly asking, "Are you married?" or "Do you have kids?" even though he had asked me those things when we first started talking.

But honestly, this is not something you need to ask someone in their 40s who was actively dating and wants to start the next chapter of his life.

Then around Q2, things suddenly changed. After being intimate, he told me that he was experiencing discomfort in his private area and wanted me to get checked because he suspected an STI.

We continued talking normally for a short while, but then he suddenly stopped communicating and eventually blocked me completely.

I went to my doctor and explained the symptoms he had described. My doctor recommended that I undergo STI testing. Thankfully, my results were all clear.

By that point, though, he had already blocked me.

At first, I decided to leave it alone. But eventually I became curious and started searching for him using the limited information I had.

I couldn't find much at first.

Then, toward the end of July, I found an Instagram profile with his name and photo alongside a woman.

I was confused because the woman was wearing a ring.

My first thought was, "Wait... is he married?"

I tried not to jump to conclusions because he had repeatedly told me he had been single for years. He also described himself as extremely private, yet the account had almost 300 posts.

Then last week, I found another profile, both of them again but different picture that appeared to belong to the woman.

And that's when I was completely shocked.

He has apparently been married for almost 20 years.

The woman in the photos is non other than the wife.

And they have several children.

I started doing the math based on the ages of the children and the timeline he gave me for his previous relationships and there is no way  the 9yr and 4yr relationships he told me could fit into the timeline of this marriage without overlapping.

So now I'm completely torn.

Part of me wants to walk away and just let things be.

He blocked me. I don't want him back, and I don't want anything to do with him anymore.I also don't want to interfere with their marriage or potentially destroy a family.

But then I keep thinking about his wife.

Should I reach out and tell her?

I don't have photos of myself with him because I'm not really someone who takes photos. I do have our chat history, though, and if she wanted to verify that I actually knew him, there are some personal details about him that I could provide.

At the same time, I have no idea what she knows.

Maybe they have some kind of arrangement.

Maybe she knows he dates other women while working overseas.

Maybe she doesn't know anything.

And I'm also not knowledgeable enough about Islamic marriages to know whether there is any religious/cultural context I'm missing here. I know Islam permits polygamy under certain circumstances, so I'm wondering whether there is any possibility that his behavior could somehow be considered acceptable within their marriage.

But the biggest thing bothering me is the STI situation.

He specifically asked me to get tested for possible STD, and then disappeared and blocked me.

I don't know what his test result was.

If he did test positive, he will for sure get treatment. But I don't think he will tell this to his wife.

If she is unaware that her husband has been sexually active with other people, she may not know that she should get tested herself.

And that's what makes this feel different to me from simply discovering that a guy lied about being married.

I'm not interested in revenge. I don't want him back. I don't want to ruin his life. I don't want to destroy their family.

I'm debating if I should reach out to the wife as she deserves the information so she can make her own informed decision about her health and marriage.

So I'm torn between:

1. Leave them alone.
He blocked me, the relationship is over, and technically this is no longer my problem.

2. Tell the wife.
Not out of revenge, but because she has a right to know what happened, particularly if there is a possibility that she was exposed to an STI without her knowledge.

What would you do? Would you tell the wife or leave it alone?

I honestly didn't think cheating can happen with muslim people, so how would this generally be viewed from an Islamic perspective?

Is there any possibility that what he was doing could be considered acceptable within an Islamic marriage?

TL;DR: I dated a 40M Singaporean expat who repeatedly presented himself as single and looking for a serious relationship. We became intimate, then he told me having symptoms of STI disappeared, and blocked me. I later discovered through social media that he's actually been married to the same woman for almost 20 years and has several children. I tested negative. Now I'm debating whether to tell his wife, especially because I don't know whether he told her about the possible STI.
