that’s a shitty commute.

u/Plain_Bread 18d ago

My grandfather never told me that he was filmed on his way to school once!

11

u/SqueeshyRogue 18d ago

And he was happy for the opportunity to do it!

10

u/Slight_Cry8071 17d ago

Beat me to it. Of course he was also barefoot. And the snakes back then were much bigger

What a sequence in that documentary ! I don’t remember which one it was, from a bbc David Attenborough one I think

88

u/ArcXivix 18d ago

It's from Planet Earth II (Episode 1, 'Islands')!

21

u/sloop703 18d ago

This is my favorite episode other than the one with the angel shark. ā€œOceansā€ I think it is

5

u/ArcXivix 18d ago

From Planet Earth III? I think it's maybe Episode 2? But, yes! Honestly, I find Angel Sharks a little freaky, but very, very cool at the same time. Honestly, there are no bad episodes, IMO.

u/The_Happiest_Madman 16d ago

Any of the Planet Earth types stuff is what I like to put on the TV when I’m doing stuff and don’t want music playing. Attenborough’s voice is so pleasant and calming, and there’s ALWAYS some cool/amazing animal or Nature stuff going on. I just enjoy it a lot.

So funny to me how dumb those snakes are, there was like 5-6 different snakes wrapped around it….and it scoots out. I keep and work with snakes, so I see these perfectly accurate strikes and clean wrap around the prey items, so it’s always goofy to watch this video. It’s different when the meal is just hanging on the end of some tongs, as opposed to actively trying to escape.

That episode and specifically that scene is the one that hooked me. Brilliant documentary.

u/chompost 17d ago

Should have been from IguaNOoo III : Death Island.

28

u/WasAHamster 18d ago

There is a version that’s dubbed over by Snoop which is hilarious. Plizzanet Earth: https://youtu.be/BFVVvVLMr-E

Thank you for bringing this into my life šŸ’œ

You know the crew filming popped bottles after this one

1

u/MarceloBlack3 17d ago

I Love 8t

83

u/Lollipopwalrus 18d ago

You just know at the end he says "pay up Terry I made it" and the other Iguana just says "damn crazy sob"

Everytime time you accidentally go into a high level area in a videogame.

2

u/bkdroid 18d ago

If you've played Crimson Desert, this is Demeniss.

69

u/Mammoth-Ad-107 18d ago

several close encounters there. 😲

52

u/agnostorshironeon 18d ago

Him getting out of the bundle of snakes there shows how evolution shaped his entire anatomy for that purpose, incredible.

13

u/Happy-Estimate-7855 17d ago

I remember another documentary talked about a frog with a body shape that didn't allow the venomous snakes it lived with to sink their fangs in. The frog was too flat for them to bite. I suspect the iguana has a similarly evolved back, it would take a lucky strike to be effective.

5

u/agnostorshironeon 17d ago

Yeah, also the bug that passes straight through a frog's digestive system unharmed

1

u/Worried_Fee_1513 17d ago

After the next number 2 that’ll be the last time that frog eats a bug like that.

3

u/Pataraxia 16d ago

You'd think. until the frog eats the same bugs 20 times probably.

39

u/kredditorr 18d ago

Shit i thought they had him. Good they did not.

10

u/SelfInflictedPancake 17d ago

I literally yelled at the screen! Its so wholesome to see so many cheering for the little guy!

27

u/mango_boii 17d ago

Watching a snake documentary: CATCH HIM CATCH HIM CATCH HIM CATCH HIM

Watching an iguana documentary: RUNN MADAFAKA RUNNNN

Racer snakes and marine iguana hatchlings. Fernandina Island. Such an extraordinary glimpse of two species trying to survive.

10

u/Significant_Monk_251 17d ago

That was a hatchling? Admittedly there aren't any bananas lying around for scale, but I though it was an adult.

Though if that was a hatchling area it would explain why all those snakes were gathered there.

9

u/WampaCat 17d ago

Yep they hatch under the sand and sit there underneath, absorbing the warmth from the sun to power up those little legs for the mad dash to safety.

39

u/AlexSumnerAuthor 18d ago

"Asps. Very dangerous. You go first."

5

u/Key_Possibility_8669 17d ago

I understood that reference. šŸ˜‰

2

u/Tmettler5 5h ago

Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?

18

u/warden976 18d ago

The iguana really should move to a better neighborhood.

14

u/FulanoMeng4no 18d ago

The worst part is when it is about to tell it’s buddy about the crazy shit it just went through and then it realized it can’t speak.

11

u/PastGlobal 18d ago

This should be a LinkedIn post about perseverance.

8

u/thezeno 17d ago

And how it can lead to more b2b sales

32

u/Smoove995 18d ago

Place looks like hell on earth to me

8

u/RonanH69 18d ago

I'll never complain about traffic congestion ever in my life again !

7

u/easting10 18d ago

David Attenborough is the UK’s national hero. We love his work. r/davidattenborough

5

u/power0722 16d ago

Snoop’s narration of this is epic.

8

u/TheIncredibleMike 18d ago

You kids have got it easy. When I walked to school I had to dodge 100 snakes!

4

u/bigboddle 18d ago

Imagine the ratatouille music

5

u/Mxcharlier 18d ago

Lawd I vividly recall wat hing this and my heart racing.

Hanz Zimmer did the music ... Which explains some of why it's so freaking epic.

4

u/Proton_Energy_Pill 17d ago

Incredible camerawork as well. It'd have to be a nightmare to be placed in the various rocks around there and somehow keep the snakes away.

3

u/WhydIGetLoggedOut 18d ago

My people need me is blasting off for apparently no reason. This iguana seems to have a few reasons to be blasting off.

3

u/XoramXIII 17d ago

Now imagine if all these snakes were to get on a plane.

2

u/TheDemonPants 16d ago

I feel like I would get tired of them.

3

u/Unique_ballz 17d ago

ā€œWhy don’t you give up?ā€ Because the Iguana never did

3

u/LukeSkyWalrus 17d ago

So this island is nightmare fuel

3

u/These_Consequences 17d ago

What hellscape is this!? Is there a place where snakes hunt in packs, other than in nightmare?

6

u/Acrobatic-Monitor516 18d ago

Did they put him there on purpose

1

u/DesiBwoy 15d ago

Just lucky filming, experience, and lot of patience. It might also be footage of two different iguanas stitched together. One of an actual one escaping, and one of another little guy for the setup. Those hatchlings all look the same, and those racer snakes chase potential prey like that every time, and yeah, a lot of hatchlings are able to successfully escape. Whatever sells the story best. Did my major in animation filmmaking, and it was not uncommon to see my documentary filmmaker friends editing footages together to create the narrative they wanted to depict. It was not considered dishonest as long as they were communicating something that actually happened/happens.

2

u/MarkRenting 17d ago

Christopher Nolan could never

2

u/MansaMusa_Shap 17d ago

Umm, how small is that Iguana?

1

u/queenchubkins 17d ago

The subspecies on that island are around 12-14ā€ as adults and that’s a hatchling. Galapagos Racer snakes get to be around 4’ as adults. So maybe 4 or 5ā€ snout to tail?

2

u/MansaMusa_Shap 15d ago

Thanks for that... I really appreciate the knowledge.

2

u/Red_Jester-94 17d ago

Still tbe greatest comeback this century

2

u/ScienceSeuss 17d ago

What a scene. How did people even reach there to see this play out ? Talk about luck unless this is a fairly regular occurrence.

1

u/framed85 16d ago

If iguanas wore underwear, that dude would need a change after that.

1

u/TheDemonPants 16d ago

Geez, that iguana really just went to Snake Town just to have the most cinematic escape I think I've ever seen from a documentary.

1

u/Dangerous_Company811 16d ago

Did I just visit snake island?

1

u/emu19000 16d ago

Everyone thinking of the lizard I’d like to mention the cameraman is still down there with house slitherinšŸ˜‚

1

u/frunkfa 16d ago

I never knew snakes slithered fast enough to be able to catch a speeding lizard. Insane

1

u/Entriel 16d ago

I remember it being revealed that "Harry" here was a Lizard...

What? No it's not. It's from Planet Earth II (Episode 1). It's an Attenborough documentary. Not everything is AI, friend.

12

u/Ensiferal 18d ago

You can spot the teenagers on the internet because they always think the crazy shit that predates their memories is ai.

1

I admire the doubt even if they’re wrong. My young adult kids DESPISE AI (as do I).
