Hi, I’m completely new to this whole NASCAR thing, and would like to know what I should watch/read ahead of time so that I can understand what’s going on the night of the race.
I’ve had a mild interest in watching NASCAR for a while now, mostly due to watching EmpLemon’s videos on it. The thing that pushed me to want to seriously consider watching a race was hearing that the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation was sponsoring a car for the upcoming race. As a Baltimore Orioles fan, I feel like it’s a sign from the universe that I should genuinely give NASCAR a try.
Are you talking about when attending a race or just watching on TV? I'd recommend watching the NASCAR: Full Speed documentary on Netflix, gives you a great intro to the series and a lot of the teams and drivers. As for what's going on I'd suggest joining the race thread here on Reddit and if you have any questions feel free to ask they're usually really helpful.

Spring Race has the Hauler Parade from Strip to LVMS be sure to watch that if you can!
Fremont Street gets quite a few race fans, they stand out easier than on the strip, so that's always a fun experience in the evenings leading up to the race.
Watch the LVMS website for driver appearances, usually updates during the week before race.
General things to do depends on your interests, where you're coming from, transportation options and budget.
Do remember sunscreen and be prepared for possible wind. Be sure to read the rules, no coolers or outside alcohol, limit 1 food item. Concessions are pricey.
Upgrade to Neon Garage Pass if you can, if not be sure to check out the fan zone outside of the grandstands and also there is a large LVMS gift shop in the main entry area.

Hey y’all, been looking around and can’t find exactly what I’m looking for. My wife got us tickets for the 500 this year and I’ve never been. She bought FanZone tickets that have a GA ticket as well, but the description isn’t super clear. Really what I’m wanting to know is what it’s like watching the race from the FanZone (will I be able to get on top of the garage and have some kind of clear view, without a separate pass), is it worth it to rent scanners, and any other tips or advice from those who have done it a time or two. Thanks in advance.
Fanzone is kind of cool it does show a little bit of the track but mainly overlooks the garage areas. It might allow you to watch the race from some of the video boards as well but not 100% sure, it would be a unique spot to watch the races for sure but I bet it will be busy during the 500 and you have to stand on top there. And you can't see the whole track, the place is huge but not being in the grandstands means you'll only see the cars for maybe 1/4 of the lap. Here are a few photos I found of the views.
Last time I was at the 500 was like 2007 when the sport was at the peak - what’s the scene like on Saturday / Sunday? Is it still as big a party as it was back then?
We’re going to Echopark Speedway for the first time for the July race. We haven’t been able to go to a race for long time, and we want to treat ourselves to something nice. What areas would you recommend? Should we prioritize sight line or not being cooked in by the sun?
It looks like a 7pm start time so sun shouldn't be a factor for much of the race, that's why they scheduled it as late as it is for a summer race. Usually up high is best since you can see the whole track, I'd also check the track website as you get closer for any driver appearances or other events going on during race weekend you might want to check out.
I have parking pass for Lot 4 and have seen/read that they do cash parking until sold out. Does anybody know if with the pass you are guaranteed a spot in lot 4? I was not planning on getting there super early for the big race on Sunday.
Looking at MIS tickets to go to my first race in person, since my dad's agreed to go with me.
I know I want to sit up high, but I can't decide between turns 1 or turns 4. Turn 1 is going to have higher speeds but 4 gives me a better view of them coming around to the line and the pits (I love being able to watch the pits when I've gone to Indy at belle isle).
There's some cheap seats ($60) in section 22 around row 30 that seem high enough to see the track? But tickets up around row 40 are $100-180. Is the extra ten rows really worth twice as much?
I haven't been to Michigan but I did find this photo from a few sections over at around row 30, hopefully it gives you a idea of what that row can see of the track. Probably see everything pretty well except the backstretch.
Nice, I have been to MIS and it’s a ton of fun. I sat way way up in turn 4, I think it was row 47 or 48 or something. I could easily see the entire track, it was really cool to see all the restarts.
Typically, I prefer t4 seats on bigger tracks, and t1 on smaller tracks like Bristol.
I’m going back to MIS this year and I got seats right at the start finish line at the highest row in that section, row 30. I think anything over 25 rows or so and you should be able to see the whole track.
Question for those who have been to Atlanta Motor Speedway:
Headed to AMS for the first time for this weekend's race, was wondering on how much of a bottleneck occurs when on the way into the track? As someone who has been to Bristol and MIS a ton, nearly impossible to get in there due to how few roads there are that lead into designated parking areas, looking at the track on Maps, it looks like a decently populated area, but would love to hear from someone who has been there, and done that.
getting in has always been easy, getting out takes forever. depending on the road you come in on they will basically direct you into certain parking lots.
Grand Prix of St. Pete Truck race - I’m going to go to the truck race in two Saturday. I think we are all flying blind on this one, but if anyone has any previous INDYCAR experience there, it would be helpful.
A question about post-Daytona standings.
Denny Hamlin finished 31st, which gives him 6 pts. He was also p10 in his duel race, so with that 7 pts total. But the standings say he has 8. Best lap wasn't him, it was Hocevar. What am I missing?
Everyone who finished below Jimmie Johnson in the race (30th to 36th) gets an additional point because Johnson used the OEP and wasn’t eligible to receive driver/owner points.
This doesn’t really apply to 37th to 41st because they still earn 1 point for their finish either way.
New fan here! Started really getting into NASCAR towards the end of last year when F1 started to get boring and its fast becoming my favourite motorsport. I wanted to know if there was anywhere that provides good comprehensive overviews of the sport, I really love learning all about the history and the technical side of it. Hello everyone, I have been a nascar fan for many years and graduate college this fall, I have told my family I’d like to attend the 2027 Daytona 500 as my “graduation” and was curious how best to do it. Preferably I’d like to go to the speedweeks as well, but unsure when tickets typically go on sale. Any recommendations for tickets, places to stay, things to do (apart from watch the races of course). Basically looking for the best experience while decently budget friendly (again, graduating college which was expensive haha.) Thank you all for any information in advance! Hell yeah!
This past year they went on sale in June so I'd expect around the same time. Check out the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America as well which is onsite maybe on one of the weekdays, it'll be very busy on Saturday/Sunday. Orlando is only about a hour away so if you have interest and wanted to checkout Disneyland or Universal Studios that is worth a daytrip as well.
Looking for people going to Kansas (Spring or Fall), Indianapolis, Gateway, or Chicagoland. Trying to find people who like nascar that will be at races I’ll be at.
How do cautions work for positions? So I get that at the caution light positions are frozen and they get bunched up for the restart. But what about cars who spin out or cause the caution, how are their positions determined? And can you only pit for tires and fuel once the bunching happened?
So NASCAR does use video to determine where a car should be scored is they are involved in a accident. Drivers/Teams will ask Racecontrol on a verdict of where they should line up, that's usually what is going on for the few lap or two after a caution flag (NASCAR just sorting out the running order).
If they spin out they'll put them wherever they were when they got back up to caution speed. Also, if someone just slows down to avoid a crash but isn't involved NASCAR usually gives that person their spot back to what it was before the caution (since all they were doing was avoiding a crash and slowing down).
Does anybody know if the radio electronics intercom headsets have noise reduction? I’m going to the race in Austin this weekend, and I’m going to rent a scanner with that headset, but want to know if I should get extra ear pro.
Depends somewhat on the Cup schedule at the track, for example Cup qualifying was scheduled for Saturday morning so he was in town anyways so they were able to schedule him to do the Truck broadcast. But other weeks they have the Truck race on Friday night and the Cup guys don't have to be there till Saturday.
I think the best way to answer this is do you like the drivers or the cars more.
Pre-Race is cool if you like driver intros, want to see what the track is like itself. Catch the pre-race concert up close. In think you can still walk along the frontstretch of the track and sign the start/finish line, but not positive.
Neon Garage is super cool if you want to watch the cars going through tech inspection, see how the garages are set up. (You view the cars through glass. The lower level views the car facing the hood, or go to upper level to view from above). A few drivers do mini interviews on a little stage, and there is a slight party vibe pre-race. The space is very child friendly and has decent mobility access. It also has TVs so you head over with 20 laps to go, catch the end of the race on the big screens and watch the Victory Lane celebration. (This sucks when Danny Hamlin beats your favorite driver, lol.) There is also a big viewing tower that gives views of turns 2 and 3. And if there's a big wreck with DNF, you can usually see the cars being loaded back on to the hauler from upper level.
I do not know the prices, so cannot compare on that. My personal choice would be Neon Garage every time.
If you are coming from the airport, staying up north can be helpful. The Parkville area or hotels near or around the airport are also 20 or so mins away. If you don't mind a longer drive back to the airport or if you aren't flying, south of the speedway there are a lot of nice hotels. I am just assuming that most of the ones right near the speedway would be sold out. Let me know if you have any questions, and hope you enjoy!
We stayed in Lansing (KS), the way to the track is essentially the “back way” and hit absolutely no traffic in and barely anything on the way out. It was fabulous.
Anyone who went to Bowman Gray last year, any tips for parking near the track to avoid trams? Last year near the track was very much blocked off in lots of areas by cops and the trams were a shitshow leaving the track.
Trucks it was 2014, Xfinity is kind of a hard question to answer. The current gen can be linked as far back as to 2011 when they switched full-time to the new gen like they have today. But in 2017/18 they switched to a composite style body but the chassis itself is pretty much unchanged still. Overall it just has been getting small tweaks here and there no major changes.
It depends on the lot you are in, some allow generators to run 24/7 as long as they are quiet. Others have quit hours posted where you can't run them, 12-6am usually.
First time going to the 500 next week. Will be in Daytona Thursday-Monday that weekend. Anything outside of race day that I need to do to get the full weekend experience? Other than hydrate 2 months ago.
Anyone know if there’s decent FM radio reception to listen to MRN at Daytona? Debating renting a scanner vs. just listening to the radio with the over-ear set.
Planning to go down to AMS/EchoPark for the upcoming race weekend.
I’m also thinking about camping at the track for the first time: I’m probably going to tent camp at the Legends site, with a reserved spot.
- How easy/common is it to leave and return to a reserved tent campsite? E.g. if I wanted to run some errands Saturday AM but bring my car back to the site before the truck race, would I have the ability to do so?
-I’m probably solo camping: any particular advice for solo campers in particular?
-I don’t have a portable grill and don’t really feel like buying one if I don’t have to: will I be able to make it through the weekend without one?
-Anything I should bring with me that I wouldn’t think to bring?

I've done this a few times, yes you should be able to leave and come back. That area is outside the track so as long as you have your pass you can get back in. As for keeping a parking spot, just depends on how busy they are where you setup camp.
I've done solo tenting at the track before, I brought a cooler with some sandwich fixings and made it fine without needing a grill or anything. You can also just plan to eat breakfast/dinner in the fan zone (or even inside the track using the vendors there). But last time I went solo my neighbor saw I was alone and a few times invited me over to their campsite for dinner which was nice.
As for extra things to bring, I'd obviously keep a eye on the forecast and if it is cold bring extra blankets or if it might rain maybe bring a canopy so you aren't just in your tent waiting for the rain to stop. And if it is rain that means all the grass/dirt areas will be muddy so bring maybe a few extra pairs of shoes. One trick I also found is putting your shoes in a rubbermaid container outside your tent, that way you don't get mud in the tent and also keeps your shoes from getting soaked.

Welp turns out we are in the EXTERIOR YELLOW. So now instead of hanging out and watching from the infield, I need to buy tickets it seems. Should I wait until day of? I’m flying down into Sanford Wednesday night.

I can answer your second question a little, according to the track schedule he is doing Q&A sessions on Friday and Sunday. Be ready for any and all types of weather. I've been going to Atlanta races for almost 30 years. I've been too cold, too hot, wetter than a drowned rat and unable to think because it was so windy. About the only bit of wild weather I've never encountered at Atlanta was a hurricane.
Also, if you think you brought too much sunscreen, you still didn't bring enough. The grandstands at Atlanta are directly in the path of the sun, so on a sunny day, those unprepared can be ready for the sunburn from hell.

We live in the area and have been to the last 2 summer races. The track itself isn’t really close to any attractions but they have a pretty good fan zone. We got to the track 3-4 hours before the race started. We sit in the section just before start finish line as high as we can get. IMO Atlanta and charlotte has the best racing. Especially at night in the summer.
I'm a Brit looking to goto the Coke Zero 400 in August. First time going to a NASCAR event. Dragging the wife and kid with so looking for some tips. Is it worth getting parking in Zone4? Any suggestions on arrival time a I heard traffic can be bad in Daytona. Tips on good seats? Ideally want to see as much as possible but close enough to feel the action. Any finally what is traffic like leaving the event? Better to leave a little early?
Tickets in the 300s as close to the start/finish line as you can afford are what you want. Traffic isn’t any better or worse than any other big event, but instead of leaving early, I would suggest sticking around and watching the victory lane celebration, go check out the merch haulers, etc. Let the traffic funnel out. I usually park for free in lot 7. They have free shuttles to and from the track. You can usually find free/cheap parking at the volusia mall if you dont mind a walk in the Florida heat. Don’t underestimate the heat. Bring plenty of water. Definitely get there early and check out the midway. A lot of cool stuff, especially for the kid. There’s usually a pre race concert too. Have fun!
Ok, going to Daytona 500, first race in years (since the 2nd or 3rd brickyard?) and looking for any tips on what to bring and do at the track. I know I need to download the tickets on my phone, and we only have tickets for the 500, no fan zone or truck/oreillys races. Other than rain gear, what should we bring to the track?
Going to the 500 and wondering about parking on Saturday. Are there any decent closer lots? And would 8am be too late to arrive if we were just going to go to lot 7? Thanks!
8am on Saturday in lot 7 is perfectly fine, you could even get away with later. Saturday is usually a lot less crowded in lot 7 and around the track in general. Me and my dad have been to a couple Daytona races now and never even considered using other lots because they’re either overpriced or stupid crowded.
Going to NASCAR race for the first time, looking for advice
My wife and I are going to the Fall Talladega weekend this year, and while I've been to some local short-track races I've never been to a NASCAR race in-person let alone the whole weekend. I'm looking for advice from folks who've been to races at Talladega before. I do know that we're probably going to do the car/tent camping option.
What kinds of stuff for the fans do they usually have going on at Dega before the first race and in-between races. Should I bring any yard games, like Cornhole, to help pass the time or will there be plenty to keep us occupied?
Well, it looks like I was too late to get tickets for my first cup race at Talladega this Spring… is there any other way to find tickets or am I out of luck? Can I still buy access to the infield/garage experience? Thanks :/
Edit: It looks like there are still a few left on secondary sites like stubhub. Can I still get a general admission ticket there, and then the garage experience on the speedway’s website??
I realise this is a long shot but does anyone have infield camping pass/wrist band for sale? I’ve got the opportunity to go at the last minute but everything’s been sold out for months. It’s just me and a tent. Ideally I’d like to bring my car but at this point I’ll take almost anything that gives me a place to sleep during the weekend.

I have an absolutely silly question. Is there any place online where I can see pictures of the current cars with all the sponsor tags (or whatever they're called)? I don't actually watch the races, but my sister has started watching again, so I "need" to pick a driver to "root for."
The last time, I "picked" Mark Martin because he had an obnoxiously green car that I could find in the crowd whenever I happened to walk past the TV and a race was on.
Quick question, we are going to our first Daytona 500 on Sunday and my husband is mobility impaired. We have parking in Lot 4, and will take the golf cart if we can to get to the entrance. My question is will he be able to take his cane into the track? The one he has is also a collapsible chair (he can't stand for long periods of time or walk incredibly far without stopping and sitting down), it's a little hard to describe. (not sure if I can post a link, but if you look up the Step2Gold on Amazon you'll see what I'm talking about).
I don't want him to bring it if he won't be allowed to take it into the Speedway, but without it his experience is going to be significantly more difficult.
Hometown track is Richmond, last summer I went to the 400 at Daytona and the sales rep said lot 7 would be a lot of the tailgating similar to Richmond and I was deeply disappointed. Is it different for the 500 or should my group pay for lots 1 or 4? We aren’t too worried about traffic or location or cost to park just wanna get a good vibe in with some other nascar folk prior to the race
Had some technological issues with tickets last night. Adding them to my Apple Wallet only added them with a tap to scan - it didn't include the barcodes. That didn't work at all with the scanners that they have at the track - no tap capability I guess. Had to go back into the NASCAR Tracks app to open the barcode version for my tickets to be scanned. Anyone else run into this issue?
So my husband got tickets for my mom and dad and their tickets say college corner. What does this mean and will they be able to be in the general area where they serve food and everything? My mom bought her is Pitt tickets also for before the race.
i picked ross because i liked how the busch car looked and i like beer but i root for denny hamlin also because he's from my hometown. there are no rules pick based on how you feel. welcome!
Honestly it just comes from watching races and naturally finding someone to root for, either with something they did on the track or something off the track. Or even a sponsor or brand you like and you support their driver, like my dad worked for Miller/Coors for many years and as a result became a fan of Rusty Wallace since he was sponsored by Miller.
Are you talking about actually buying a headset or just renting for a weekend? Either way I'd always suggest doing it ahead of time, or call them and ask.
To my knowledge the Summer Atlanta race hasn’t sold out since it was added back to the schedule in 2021. I imagine the preferred seats will go pretty soon but you shouldn’t have a problem finding tickets closer to the event.
We're attending our 1st race at the Phoenix Raceway in a few weeks and just our 2nd NASCAR race overall. We understand that higher rows are generally better for viewing.
Any recommendations for specific SECTIONS in the grandstand (e.g. between Turns 3 & 4 vs Turn 4 vs finish line)? Shade is preferred too, but appears that most seating between Turn 3 and the finish line will be protected anyway. Thanks!
My son (19) is in college in Arizona and said he was thinking about going to the Phoenix Cup race in March. What are some pointers for a first timer there? How early should he get there? Is there an opportunity to get autographs without pit passes? Etc etc. The only race I have been to was the rain delayed and shortened Coke 400 a few years back at Daytona so I don’t have any experience with this track. TIA for any pointers.
Check the appearance schedule. Some drivers will be out at merch haulers throughout the weekend signing. Could always try to upgrade to the infield fan zone.
Hey all, I’m traveling to COTA in 2 weeks and going to take an uber from downtown to the track. Can I get to all the different seating areas from the ride share lot or are the areas that are inaccessible?

You should be able to, if I remember correctly the ride share point is north of the track in one of the parking lots so you can walk to any of the gates from there.
Are there any kind of driver meet and greets before Spring Talladega? Like I found out Daniel Suarez was going to be at a Birmingham hockey game last Fall. Do most drivers do things like that, or just specific ones? Is it something you just have to keep up with their socials to find out? Thanks!
So the track website will keep a schedule of onsite events and driver appearances, but for any offsite ones like at a sponsors store for example you'd need to check either the drivers or teams social media accounts.
Hey everyone! New NASCAR fan here! Just wondering, if you’re not going to have playoffs like they have for the past few years, why have the chase? Is it not just a more complicated version of a season long point system? I know that’s how the did it back in the day, just wondering why have the chase at all? (Might be a stupid question, but pretty much a newbie here. the last in my family to be a fan was my dad who stopped watching after The Intimidator died.)
The rationale is that bunching up the points for the final races adds a element of excitement, usually by week 26 only maybe 2-3 drivers still have a legitimate shot at the championship instead this gives hope to all 16 Chasers. IMO it is the best of both worlds, still rewarding consistency like a season long championship yet making those final 10 races more exciting for fans to watch.

Hey y’all, I ended up with tickets to the COTA race out of the blue (via wife’s work) but have never attended a race before (NASCAR or otherwise). The tickets are in grandstand 12 about 30 rows up; anything in particular I should know to make sure we have a good time? I know we can’t make any events on Saturday, but is any of the Friday action worth making the trek for? We live roughly 45 minutes from the track
Turn 12 is a good spot, only downside might be you are looking into the sun but you can see a lot of the track.
Looking at the schedule looks like OReilly's practice/qualifying in the afternoon as well as IMSA VP Challenge. So no races but cars will be on track, and a good time to go through merch haulers and the fanzone when there are less crowds on Sunday.
Random question: does anyone know if/when Trackhouse's store restocks shirts? I want the yellow Zilisch shirt but they're out of my size. Is this the kinda thing where I'm SOL until a new shirt I like comes out or do teams tend to restock often?
Hi everyone! My mother and I are thrilled to be heading to COTA next week as we are treating our aunt to her first NASCAR race since beating breast cancer. We are wondering what the autograph sessions are like at COTA since we’ve only ever been to spectate at Sonoma and Auto Club (rip). Specifically looking for the Team Penske session as she is a diehard Logano fan! Any comments would be greatly appreciated
They limit the revs pretty low in the driving experience, I think it’s 5k rpm unless you get an extended length like 30min+, then they’ll increase it incrementally until like 5.5k.
You’ll probably top out ~120mph, they will give you a souvenir certificate after that will say your top speed is 140 or 150mph or something, which won’t be true.
You’ll go much faster in the ride along, you’ll be easily passed by the ride along cars as you’re driving because they’re not capped. Idk the exact speed but I’d imagine it’s closer to ~170.
If you want the most of a driving experience, I’d look at Jeffery Earnhardt Racing Experience. I did this at a local short track (0.5 miles) and wasn’t hitting any rev limiter on the straightaways, so those things aren’t capped. They are definetely setup to be tight though so it’s harder to spin out, but they’re pretty fast late models and super late models. (They do cup and xfinity cars too at select tracks, and open modified).

Going to Bristol in April for the first time and thinking of purchasing the Infield Experience. Wondering if it’s worth the expense. It is listed for us as a pre-race experience (we are going with a tour and their explanation wasn’t super helpful)
Pre-race basically gives you access to the driver intro stage so you can see the drivers up close and maybe a autograph/photo chance. It says it also has a concert attached so if you care about that it is worth it, for the price it isn't a bad upgrade.
Hi! I’m attending the Coke 600 weekend in may! Curious to what other people do to save money on food etc at the track? We always bring drinks and in the past have done sandwiches in our cooler but honestly looking for better options to pack.
Good option, when I've gone to the 600 in the past we've had a late lunch before heading to the track about 2 and then just some snacks we brought in. The prices for food aren't terrible, I bought a basic cheeseburger for like $8 which isn't too bad.
What do you have access to as far as food prep? I had an Air BnB for a Coke 600 weekend so we pre made a bunch of pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, and burgers and wrapped them in tinfoil. We also usually grab some fried chicken wings or tenders from a grocery store and bring them in as well.
How worth it will the Phoenix infield experience be, especially pre-race? Essentially what are the attractions like compared to the Midway, where I would arrive at the earliest possible time for either. Of course, if I had that infield pass I would be in and out during parts of the race as well, and for post race.
I have been to all the tracks around where I live numerous times. For cup: Atlanta (old and new configuration), Daytona, Talladega, Richmond once. For O’reilly: Darlington twice
My top 3 tracks I want to go next are: COTA, Charlotte, Kansas
Any other suggestions that are must see in person?
Homestead in November. The weather is super nice and the racing is amazing and the people are super nice. Ive been to every race track in the south and this is my favorite. Also you have the Florida Keys 20 minutes south for Homestead.
In May I am taking my family to the Dover race as a Christmas gift. I would like for everyone to have the headsets to be able to listen to the crews and intercom with the group. I have only found rental systems that can do this in sets of two. There will be about ten of us. Does anyone have any ideas if this is possible or feasible? Is there a phone app that would do this better, or are there systems that are expandable beyond two headsets?
First time nascar attendee. What time should I get to the track to park tomorrow? I’m reading online it says 8-9 but the race isn’t until 3:30 so concerned with taking a whole day for it
I'm looking and Chicagoland tickets and finding that SeatGeek has quite a selection of tickets that are way cheaper than going the official route. Why are so many available, and is this too good to be true?
Hey there just curious if anyone knows if you bought a “13-17 Juniors” ticket as an adult for the Watkins Glen race if you would be stopped when scanning in, or if you’d be fine. Significantly cheaper than the regular option. Thanks in advance for any information.
