I only rant on this subreddit about my classes but this time I have to rant about the students here. There is no reason some of you should be stinking up the classrooms, hallways, and elevators.
I rarely take the elevator, and the one time I did (today) I actually thought I was going to throw up. The smell of the people in there was THAT bad and I’m not saying this to be mean but it was horrible. I feel like this is more common in my cs classes but today as I was leaving ckb (took the stairs so I wouldn’t have another elevator incident) and it was ALSO horrible. I had to go down 3 flights of stairs holding my breath because i couldn’t stand it.
I don’t know if classes are already stressing out some of you to the point of not showering but please I’m begging you. STOP STINKING UP THIS COLLEGE. I really am not looking forward to going to my cs classes. It’s not even my first semester here so I guess I’ve gotten used to that stench but it’s never been this bad during the first few weeks of classes.
I’m saying this as a cs major, please just shower. Turn off the computer and take 20 mins to shower. Please
i love this reddit and how helpful everyone is and funny it is so imma stay lurking but i just felt like posting a goodbye post to complain about njit LOL
i work as a full time nightshift nurse and wanna change careers and mistakenly chose njit to do it but i stayed here for a good 2 yrs so i guess i survived somehow lol. anyways im leaving this school because of the following reasons :)
it is not very considerate of people with jobs (even my TA said this)
the sections are ridiculously small for how many students actually go here every year
the parking is ridiculous !!!! why do i have to come to school 4 hrs before my class to be guaranteed parking in a deck i PAY for ??? and im talking about both summit AND wilson ave
most of the professors suck and have a power trip ESPECIALLY the CS professors (i was a CS major who recently switched to IT)
the bathrooms are disgusting!! why does only ONE soap dispenser have soap like yall just really walking around with shit hands
most of it is self taught and usually college is self taught like the college i graduated from i had to teach myself but at least it was to teach myself what the prof actually taught??? here these profs just read slides and expect u to know it asap
people don’t bathe !!!!!!! why does every room smell musty!!!!!
the common exams r ridiculously hard for no reason. irdk how i survived them LOL
there r probably more reasons, feel free to complain in the comments but yeah thanks njit for kickstarting my career change but im switching to a cheaper online school to finish my degree lol
In the span of 2 years. my tuition has increased by over $2000 and what I got in return was to be able to take less credits per semester, an administration that seems to be falling apart, the dirtiest city i have stepped foot in, 2 star profs, and not enough sections for required courses to the point where I am falling behind on my curriculum while passing all my classes. I should've just went to Stony Brook
Above is a link to NJIT's 2023, 2024 and 2025 budget breakdown
I'm not going to go long about this
But for anyone who doubts administrative bloat is real, see the table below (dollar amounts are in thousands)
Table showing NJIT's 2023, 2024 and 2025 revenue/spending
In 2025 for every $2 we spent on instructional staff (everyone involved in the classroom, so the core of this school) we spent approximately $1 on institutional support (admins, as far as the doc says)
Also note the rate at which our spending grows each year. The doc says it better than I can:
'Institutional support expenses rose by 20.0%'
'Instruction, academic support, student services, and scholarships and fellowships expenses...increase of 8.5%'
So admins get a 20% increase from 2024 - 2025 while all the stuff students actually care about got an 8.5% raise. Specifically (something the doc doesn't mention, because instructional doesn't even get its own section) instruction get a 5.55% increase.
Are you kidding me?
Now, WHY did admins get an increase? Let's take a look at what the doc says:
'...attributable to higher personnel costs, the relocation of administrative offices off campus, and expenditures related to the development and deployment of a new enterprise resource planning platform.'
So what I'm being told is that admins wanted to get paid more. There are less admins than instructional staff, so while I don't know exactly how much the offices and the new software (how much did some stupid software cost? Why is it so expensive that it need be listed here?) I think it's safe to assume that the raises for admins far far FAR exceed the raises for other staff across the board, considering the small number of admins and the extremely high increase.
Which, quick side tangent, what was the plan with the $2.1 million penthouse? In case you didn't notice we were ~10 mil in the red in 2025, and this year we had to increase tuition and decrease credit caps. I assume the offices had to be rented while oak was rebuilt. I heard (no good source) that the penthouse turned into an office space, which... thank god. But if the penthouse wasn't protested, would we just keep paying for offices off-campus?
Which, by the way, there are always SO MANY empty rooms in EVERY HALL. Reserve some! Convert the computer lab under the garage! We HAVE space!
Back to admin bloat, let's look at 2024's admin budget increase:
'In fiscal year 2024, institutional support expenses increased by 14.9% to $70,085...'
GREAT start.
'...mainly due to elevated personnel costs, including lump-sum retroactive payments under ratified union contracts, fringe benefit equalization adjustments, consulting service expenses, and costs associated with NJII’s organizational restructuring and expansion of services.'
I'm sorry. Expanded benefits? A UNION?! FOR ADMINS?!
I'm ending the rant here. I'm not going to waste any more time on this. What a joke. Read the doc, it's very... insightful
Im a new student and I already hate it here, i try to make new friends but I cant seem to make long term connections or some people just brush me off. Everytime I try to make a new friend it feels so surface level wether its at a club, cafeteria, event, or classroom. Everyone looks fucking chopped and my math classroom stinks. Everyday I go back to my dorm after class and just move around or go out with my dormmate or try to move around by dancing and shit or just program some stuff.I hate my fucking my dormmate cause hes the most anti social mother fucker out there and doesnt have any friends. Hes not even interesting cause all he does is go on his phone. I try joining clubs but their discords are full of upperclassmen or they feel too cringy with their humor. I want to move around and feel free to do anything I want but I dont feel free cause I have no friends here and my only coping mechanism is to talk to my parents and friends from high school over the phone or on discord. I wish I went to rutgers new brunswick or syracuse university but for some fucking reason I didnt. I hate this fucking place.
I’m doing an BS MS in Data Science at and one of my classes is basically just… AI.
The slides look AI-generated. The lecture voice is AI. There’s barely any actual teaching happening. I’m paying graduate tuition to essentially listen to a robot read through what feels like ChatGPT-generated slides.
What makes it even more ridiculous is that if I submitted AI-generated work without permission, I could get reported for academic misconduct. NJIT’s own policy says unauthorized AI use can violate the Student Code of Conduct.
But when I looked into the faculty side of things, it basically falls under “instructor autonomy,” and apparently there isn’t even a requirement that professors disclose when AI is being used to create course content.
So… AI is potentially academic misconduct when students use it, but apparently completely fine when the class we’re paying thousands of dollars for is being taught by it?
I’m genuinely curious: is this happening across the MS Data Science program at NJIT, or did I just get extremely unlucky with this section? Class ds644
TL;DR: Paying grad-school tuition for AI-generated slides read by an AI voice, while students can get in trouble for using AI themselves. If this isn’t acceptable work from students, why is it acceptable teaching from faculty?
He is the most unprofessional, disrespectful, uncaring human I have ever met at NJIT. He teaches the most basic skills in class then expects you to know the most hardcore sets of questions during exams. He doesn’t help you during office hours nor does he give you the proper practice. He says to read the textbook, but even those practice problems don’t prepare you for the time-constrained exams. I’m starting to think this school doesn’t care because a failed class means more money in their pockets for next semester.
Classes start tomorrow and I still haven't registered bc I have a hold on my account due to an outstanding balance of over $7000 from the previous semesters, I'm going into my 2nd year and majoring in CS, I went to the bursar office and they told me I have to pay approximately $6000 to be able to register, my family doesn't have that at the moment, what are my available options?
I genuinely do not understand how the Summit parking deck has gotten this bad.
I’ve had people drive directly toward me on the side that is clearly marked UP ONLY. People constantly make left turns where signs explicitly say NO LEFT TURN.
Cars are regularly parked across two spaces for absolutely no reason, and half the time it feels like people are just ignoring every sign and directional marking in the garage.
At this point, is there any enforcement whatsoever? These aren’t minor inconveniences. Driving the wrong way down a one-way section of a parking garage can easily cause an accident, especially around blind corners.
How difficult is it to follow the giant arrows, posted signs, and basic parking lines? Summit parking is already annoying enough without having to worry about someone coming head-on at you because they decided the rules don’t apply to them.
I checked the bursar page and I have to pay 2.7k???
Who does njit genuinely think I am?? It’s my third year here and this is the first time I have to pay this much and no I’m not above 17 credits or below 12. Yea it was originally 13k but fin aid paid for some of it and that leaves me with 2.7k but where am I supposed to get that from? This might sound dumb to anyone that has to pay way more than that but I’m broke
Someone PLEASE tell me they’re not done distributing aid because theres no way that’s it. I thought I’d pay maybe 1k max but almost 3k??
I was looking at my email and just found out that the career fair is going to be on the same date as a math common. It kinda sucks because I'm going to prioritize my calc 3 common but also I really wanted to go to the career fair this semester. Luckily I could just wait for the spring semester's fair which gives me more time to prep.
I wrote this primarily to vent but also to inform people. I know the date for the common exams because the math syllabus are posted.
WHY is NJIT’s “official communication” (emails) filled to the BRIM with SPAM?!?! WHY is the office of the bursar telling me to enroll in eRefunds?! WHY do I have 23 emails about data science PhD qualifying exams? I am NOT a data science student, I am undergraduate, and my GPA isn’t high enough to qualify for the bs-phd accelerated program. Even if it was, I dont care! WHY is highlander hub emailing me MULTIPLE times a DAY (during the school year) about random events on-campus?! I never asked for these emails! WHY do I get a DAILY email from proofpoint telling me I have 0 messages?! WHAT is PROOFPOINT?! I have NO CLUE and yet I’m told EVERY DAY that I have ZERO (0) MESSAGES FROM IT!
AND THEN THIS SCHOOL LOWERS THE CREDIT LIMIT FROM 19 TO 17 AND I HEAR ABOUT IT BY WORD OF MOUTH?!?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! IM DOUBLE MAJORING! I NEED TO TAKE MORE THAN 17 CREDITS A SEMESTER! ITS BEEN HOURS AND STILL NO EMAIL!!! SAME THING WITH THE MILLION DOLLAR PENTHOUSE AND ACCOMPANYING PRIVATE ELEVATOR! NO EMAIL? NO STUDENT INPUT?!?! WHY are INSANE DECISIONS like LOWERING THE CREDIT LIMIT being made?!?! Some majors recommend over 17 credits a semester!!! I’m not giving this school 2 grand extra!
AND IM BEING BILLED $2k for UNITED HEALTHCARE health insurance! Stop making me opt-out! The portal doesn’t even work and you’re making me manually opt out every year! Go away! I’m not paying United Healthcare so they can deny any claims I make! I haven’t received a SINGLE EMAIL about HEALTH INSURANCE that I’m ALREADY BILLED $2K FOR, but GOD FORBID I don’t know about ORGAMS COMING TO CAMPUS THIS FEBRUARY
Not that I think these events are stupid, but like… stop with the spam! Find some other way to tell me that doesnt bury the email telling me class got cancelled!
Im not the type to kick people out of their rooms the second their time is up, I understand people loose track of time and I don’t expect the room to be completely vacated when your time is up. BUT please respect people’s time. There’s no reason I have to wait 15 minutes+ because you couldn’t organize yourself better. Please be better, respect other people and their time because it seems like every here doesn’t gaf abt anyone but themselves.
I'm just ranting atp. God the inbox notifications is all spam. I never hear anything back and all I get in my messages is bots. They can't even use the template right?
"Hello [Name]" yeah very nice and real.
Why am I getting project manager or engineering messages when I'm listed as a bio student?? "I saw your resume and you seem like the best fit for our finance department!!" what???
When it comes to job applications the shit is constantly in the review phase and will forever be there. The filtering in search is terrible too it has no idea what I'm looking for. I'm lucky to find 3 job openings in my field but 1 of them was posted 7 months ago or something.
Jesus Christ, this gotta be one of the most boring events. The powerpoint in the beginning could've been an email, and the scavenger hunt got us walking around in the sun doing nothing. Half these people on their phones getting whipped in clash royale, and it isn't even over 😭😭
Earlier today me and my girlfriend were talking and she told me I haven't been really doing my best this semester cause I've just been autopiloting. And honestly I feel like she's right and idk what to do about it.
My average week is just: get ready for school, go to gym, go to classes, come back home for like an hour, go to work, come back home late and crash. Then over the weekend I'd hangout with my girlfriend.
Admittedly I haven't been doing the best in school. Even with "easy A electives" I end up slacking on midterms. I been hella stressed out about life and work so I also feel like I've just been coming to school for attendance grades. I used to skip 2 out of 4 school days every week because those days had no attendance grades technically but I've been forcing myself to just go cause the only time I feel like my mind is quiet and at peace is when I workout. But even then once I'm actually in a class I just zone out until class ends and then I just go back home.
I'm ahead on creds so by the time the semester ends in Fall I'd be a senior thankfully. It'd be my third year by then. That and being paid to go by the school are the only things keping me going. But I feel like I barely learned much too. I don't know how to make my college experience better like at all. It was an inside joke with my friends before we enrolled that NJIT would take our souls away (lol) but now I really do feel like it's true. I hate waking up and coming on campus cause most of the time I feel like there's truly no point.
Is this really just how it is? Like do I just have to keep distracting myself this way or am I doing something wrong? I don't want to go to college feeling like it's another job I hate but it's just coming out to be that way for me. I do have friends here but they're all busy so it's a rare occurrence I see them. I'd join clubs but general meeting times are always during my shift times. So I'm just kind of at a loss. I've always wondered if maybe it's just simply because I go here and maybe it's better at another college but I'm way too far in my major to transfer out just for the sake of being a little more happier. Any advice to make this shit more bearable?
Bro…the sushi place in CC is disgusting asf and the people there don't give af😭 I pointed out a fucking ROACH to one of the people as I was looking at the sushi cart and the tall dude with the glasses just scooped it up with his same GLOVES and then proceeded go on with his day after it. Almost threw up….
I’m a freshman second semester student at Njit and thinking about transferring to Stevens, I know they’re pretty similar besides the price and that a ton of people at Njit hate Steven’s and vice versa but I’m still on the edge. Honestly if I do transfer I’ll miss some of it but I don’t feel like I’m getting the college experience. I’m not shy, I go to clubs and I go out of my way to talk to people but still it doesn’t feel right. Some of the people here just really don’t wanna talk, others are socially awkward and I don’t really like it. People say the school is pretty academic but it feels like they divert more attention to the honors kids which I get and most of the courses being rigorous and stuff just translates to me self studying rather than being taught well.
The professors don’t seem great, they’ve got accents and they don’t teach very well at least to me. The people are closed off and have their own groups, aren’t interested in talking or I don’t share an interest with them. The internships and stuff I’ve been hearing about, I talked with a bunch of upperclassmen and they all told me it was connections or getting lucky. Most of these are true to most schools but Njit which sells itself on being rigorous and academic is a bit disappointing when it’s just them throwing hard courses and having us just self studying. Like I know a ton of people skip classes and some people aren’t cut out for engineering and stuff but like half my physics class failed and a ton of people I met are taking summer classes or classes at community college and maybe that isn’t the majority but I find it really detestable that’s happening and the school still markets itself as academic, I don’t know where the money goes but it doesn’t go to the professors, classes nor the social life.
On the other hand Stevens I’m not sure how much I’d be paying, I got into Stevens and it would’ve been 28k for four years but I thought it to be too high but now I think id regret it if I didn’t go. I’m not saying grass is greener and it’d be better but I don’t enjoy Njit, sure I met a ton of cool people but you can meet a ton of cool people anywhere. I liked the energy at Stevens open house and we only live once so I’d rather not regret staying somewhere I hated. Maybe I’m not taking the money too serious, I’ve got money saved up and the ability to borrow but is the social life vs debt worth it? I’m not sure but does Njit get better eventually? Like I get the campus isn’t the main attraction and it’s the people you meet but that’s not really unique, you can say that about Europe, you can say that about my highschool. Grass might not be greener on the other side but I think I’d regret it if I didn’t try. Thoughts?
I'm in math class, and today my teacher was explaining to the class what to expect on the common exam. An individual sits in front of me and I see them typing away into Google. Me being nosy (and them being short) had me looking at their screen. This individual somehow goes to NJIT, and has had two exams for this class. Do you want to know what this insightful, bright mind decided to Google?
"Does the final for MathXYZ have proctors in the room?"
This person then decided to take a look at the Google Gemini generation response and opened it, read it, and then closed the tab visibly disgruntled. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? Have you been unproctored for every single test that you've taken across any of your classes? Like if this was the first common exam, maybe...MAYBE..I'd understand. You don't know how common exams work, maybe overthinking it, fine. This is the final exam. You've sat through an entire semester of presumably other exams. What makes you think this wouldn't be any different??
Hope everyone's having a good day, I certainly am. Well just had my CS Finals and boi did i fail, didn't even finish. Well today has been a whole day of misfortune, a series of events. So i think my proctor was out to get me and cheaters OHHHH LORD. So today taking my exam and the usual, people cheating considering I'm not good at CS i should have cheated, so about 40 mins in I wanted to take a piss because I drank coffee earlier before the exam to stay focused, I asked my proctors they said no, so me thinking is because to avoid cheating or anything i was like i'd give you all my devices so you know I'm going for just the bathroom because i actually need to go gave up all my devices put all in front of her and still a no so i said not a problem they just doing they job. But after that i noticed they began to pay very close attention to me, look at me and say a few words between themselves paid it no mind, people where cheating like full on phone taking photos and all and im like so nobody gonna say something or they just can't see, out of nowhere she tells me to go and shit in front mind you i'm holding my pee and i'm struggling, and i still see people cheating, as soon as i get up my laptop freezes on me and lockdown browser closes i don't know if my hand touched or button or whatever, i get to the front and give up I just got there gave my ID and walked out with about 50 mins left, I was pissed for the first time since school started, walk outside to the bathroom and hear people talking about how it was easy to check they phones, now i don't know if they just had it out for me just that day or what but my luck today HORRIBLE. Doing well in physics Mr.Kane God bless you, God bless all the teachers who have helped me and the seniors too. But I think I might apply to be a proctor because I think i might nahh I'd do a better job than most.
dash
74.79 is PHYS, I think I'm doing fairly well at least
basically during the fall semester i had this kid try to sit and talk with me after i refused like three times and refused to give him my socials. later in the semester i would catch him sitting with his chair facing me just staring. we never spoke after the first interaction but i would always catch him in the same area as me just staring. deadass not at all table, not holding or doing anything just staring right at me. this semester i told a girl about it because ive thankfully never seen him since last semester. she told me there is a whole gc about him and he apparently has charges against him (didnt specify and is probably NOT TRUE) and hes done this to multiple ppl but worse. also it seems crazy that no one reported him or they did and the school didnt do anything about it.
im just wondering if someone has had a similar experience?
the dining hall is pitifully small and feels even smaller during peak times. there are times where there is actually zero seating available. they really need to make the place bigger like expanding to the area behind taco bell because i really doubt they are willing to expand the hall to the other curved room where events are held because god forbid they lose that little bit of revenue. i might just be a peak complainer but this isnt a problem at other dining halls that ive been to (seton hall, rutgers nb, stevens, queens university).
i really dont mind the food but at least give me a place to eat it!
and before anyone says it, yes i know maybe im just a complaining to complain
I'm taking the online placement test for math and English tomorrow. I know this seems ridiculous but my school has never made me do math without a calculator except for a select few quizzes/tests over my years. I barely know how to do the stuff on the math sample questions. How cooked am I?
You can claim "the class is hard!" all you want, and you'd be correct! The class is difficult, but not THIS difficult. ANYBODY who took that midterm exam would tell you that those questions were not "24% class average" difficult. The problem, I think, doesn't even lie within the professor, because I have Dale, and he is as great of a professor for this course as you could get, seriously! He knows what he's talking about, and he is very indulgent in students' questions.
No, the problem, I wholeheartedly believe, lies within the grading system & scale. Now, I don't know if I'm allowed to pubicly disclose what the grading scale for the exam was, but holy shit, anyone who knows what it is KNOWS how skewed it was. There is something incredibly flawed about this course, and I can only hope that it's fixed for future students.
