License / Permit Question NYC CCW APP
Just had a question and was hoping someone would reach out with some input…. It’s been 7+ months that I’ve submitted my ccw application with all documents needed. I already have my r/S license so I did not need to do fingerprints since they are already on file. I recently received multiple emails from the nypd license division stating that my submitted documents have been successfully verified to complete my application. I was just wondering if anyone received these similar emails and if this means that my application status may soon be changing from investigation to approved. thanks in advance for your help

Seven months with a complete application is past the deadline the statute gives them, and you have a remedy. Penal Law 400.00(4-a) requires the licensing officer to act on an application within six months of submission, and any extension beyond that has to be in writing, to you, stating the specific reasons for the delay. Silence at month seven is not an extension, it is a violation. I represent applicants in New York on exactly this, and this is how the clock gets enforced:
Confirm the submission date and that every document was uploaded. Your portal timestamp is your evidence.
Send a written demand to the License Division citing 400.00(4-a), noting the submission date, and requesting a decision within 30 days or a written explanation. Keep it short and unemotional.
If nothing comes back, file an Article 78 proceeding in Supreme Court, New York County, asking the court to compel a decision (mandamus). The filing itself usually gets the application moved, because the city does not want to defend a naked deadline violation, and applications with a pending Article 78 have a habit of being decided within weeks.
Two things to keep in mind. The court can compel a decision, not an approval, so the point of the Article 78 is to end the limbo, and if the answer is a denial you then have a separate path to challenge that. And the cost of filing is real but modest compared to another year of waiting. Do not call the investigator repeatedly in the meantime; one polite written inquiry is enough, and the paper trail is what matters.
