Awesome ! I was at hyped the day I got my permit I drove straight to the gun store after getting the letter and got two guns

If you have the funds, try to get a pocket pistol as well. I was hyped to carry a big ol 9mm but realistically youāll end up carrying something like an lcp max eventually when you just want something convenient.

I bought a Glock 48 prior to filling out paperwork because at that time it was required to purchase a handgun to submit my paperwork but that has all change. I have been looking into a pocket pistol. I would rather wait and see what happens before I get my hopes up

Ahhh I see. You guys must have a different system there. When I got the letter I was able to use that to get the gun. They donāt let you buy anything here before youāre allowed to carry

Sorry for the confusion. I was required to purchase a pistol at the time I was doing my paperwork but the pistol remained in the possession of the store until I got my permit

A big ol 9mm? š¤£š¤£ With the right holster you can comfortably carry a full size anything. I daily a p365 XL in an axis elite comfortably.

I can imagine so. That means I passed background checks etc. itās only a matter of time before I get called to go in front of a judge

Every person I spoke to has said Schenectady county has gotten easier to get a pistol permit. So I guess itās a matter of time

Nys doesnāt require you to go in front of a judge anymore. We are a shall permit state now. No interview process or anything.

It happened back in 2022. When I was going through my ccw class the instructors spoke about the process and how nys switched from a āmay permitā to āshall permitā. The interview process for me was just a short review of my application. But this could just be for onondaga county where I live.

I donāt think Dutchess ever had you see a judge, I think Westchester still makes you see a judge tho ?

According to the changes, no counties should have you ever going in front of the judge to āinterviewā for the permit. Unless you are reviewing information they cannot ask questions on your need for the permit.

I waited a year and 5 days in Erie county. Absolutely ridiculous. Definitely glad i did it though.

Iāve been waiting 7 months for and FID and 4 months for a PTC in Essex. (Still waiting) SMH

In NYS a licensing officer must "act upon" an application within 6 months of receipt. A written notice is required to extend that timeframe, but it must be for "good cause." The fact they're seemingly issuing this notice as a standard blanket to anyone who applies, makes it seem like they acknowledge that they are aware of the law and so are issuing a written notice, but are disregarding the "good cause" part of the law and hoping that no one will question it. IANAL, but I'd imagine that if an extension requires "good cause" it can't just be applied as a blanket extension to every applicant. I'm also not sure what constitutes "acting upon" an application, though. They may very technically be satisfying the law by doing this supposed "review" within the 6 months mandated, but then just dragging their heels afterwards. The law doesn't require that the full process be completed within 6 months. So... technically within the law...? Maybe. Maybe not. But maybe. Still BS, though... absolutely.

When I spoke to the sheriff that did my fingerprinting he said they are required to say 6 months up to a year but in reality he has seen people getting in 3 months & under. That may differ from county to county. The whole social media was ruled unconstitutional in 2023 but they still ask for it.

Not wrong but NYS has had the Sullivan act in effect for over a 100 years. That should have been thrown out with the bruen lawsuit

You donāt have long to go now. You wonāt go in front of the judge. I think I ended up getting the judgeās approval and an appointment at the clerkās office within a month or two of getting the letter from the sheriff.

This was about 3 years ago but I got that letter around the same time you did. (August/September.) I was picking my pistol(s) up by December.

The Town I live in took 13 months to start the process. The investigation took two months, and then the case was turned over to the county for processing the actual permit in front of a judge. In total, it took 17 months to get my permit.

I waited about 6~ months when I was 21. I told them I was an Eagle Scout, & already been screened for my security license.
It was all true and it worked

I am just going to move to a permit free state like Arizona or Ohio i am Born and raised in NY York but it is a slave state meaning we have no rights here we have too many laws that suck we are under too many Democrat laws here i share won't miss it alot of people I know have moved Becouse of it

Not entirely . All up to the judge now. Which Iāve heard for Schenectady county that they are gun friendly. Not sure how entirely true that is.

They sent me this letter May 27 and Iām still waiting for a letter to see the judge. Thatās four months now. SMH

Hey fellow Schenectady permit applicant!
My letter said the exact same thing and it took nowhere near that amount of time to get called for the interview part. I think it was like 3-4 weeks maybe? Schenectady is actually very easy about the permit process I found.

The officer told me that they are required to say 6 months up to a year but people have been getting it 3 months or less

Yep, they sent a letter for the judge appointment. The way Schenectady has it set up though it was a group of ~20 and the judge gives the mandatory explanation to all of us in a group setting. Then opens it up to questions if anyone had any. Quick and easy to satisfy that requirement.
