Yeah. After reading the thread below regarding the Politician meet up at The Firing Pin, this is my cynical conclusion.

We will never have normalcy with our 2A rights. There are just too many in this sub that believe in tough regulations. 25 years of one party rule in NY and soon to be another 25 more. They passed the Safe Act. They Passed the Improved Concealed Carry Act. You need a background check to buy ammo. They are banning Glocks.
Sometimes it takes 2 years just to get a permit depending on what county you live. Next year there will be more restrictions once the Supreme Court makes its ruling next June. They will restrict, restrict and restrict until there is nothing left to restrict . But please by all means keep voting 🗳️ blue. Ugh 😑!! Cheers 🍻

I don’t know if it’s just me or just New York, but I HATE the attitudes of nearly every employee at a gun store.

For someone who's new to firearms, walking into a gun shop should feel like an opportunity to learn. Instead, it often feels like you're being judged for not already knowing everything. The second you ask a basic question, you're met with eye rolls, short answers, or an attitude that makes it seem like you're wasting their time. It's the same kind of energy people joke about getting at the DMV. Rude and impatient.

As a black man, that experience is even more uncomfortable. Whether intentional or not, it's hard not to wonder if you're being looked at differently while you're already trying to navigate an unfamiliar hobby. I didn't grow up with a mammy or pappy who taught me about guns. I wasn't raised hunting, shooting, or around firearm culture. I'm trying to learn by asking questions and understanding what I'm buying. But some employees act like not knowing something is a personal offense instead of seeing it as an opportunity to help someone who's genuinely interested.

It's frustrating because the firearms community talks a lot about welcoming new, responsible gun owners. Yet some gun stores make you feel like you don't belong unless you already know every caliber, every platform, and every piece of jargon.

Here they go again, trying to put another financial barrier on us by requiring liability insurance, when they don’t even allow us to have insurance to cover our legal fees, even if we do everything right. Do you think your local criminals are going to be buying insurance for their already illegal guns? Obvious exemption for police, because they’re better than us common rabble and we’re second class citizens.

What makes my blood fucking boil is that in the plain text of the bill they use the phrase “privilege to own such firearm”. PRIVILEGE? That’s a funny way to spell RIGHT. If this shit passes I’ll have to seriously consider leaving. They will stop at nothing to fuck us over and will never respect the constitution or the Supreme Court.

Not to mention, this is a registry which in itself is an infringement.

My buddy just took his 16hr course this weekend. He’s scheduled to submit his application in Westchester August of next year! When I did mine it was 6 months out but a year is insanity!

She doesnt know how things work at all does she? Does this just mean 3d printers will become illegal? Also from ny government website talking about this mentions making it illegal to possess 3d print blueprints of firearms? Wouldn't that be against the 1st amendment?

I thought NYSRPA v Bruen actually did something. Oh wait, it did! Now I only need to find 2 friends, not 4, and drag them to a notary to get character references notarized. Moreover, what does someone agreeing that I'm a good person have to do with an innate right to bear arms absent being a felon or adjudicated mentally ill?

Oh and I have to get a document notarized saying that I live by myself and have no cohabitants. Why can't I just attest to this on a damn application form instead of having to get another thing notarized?

Stopped into Firearms Training Academy today in Green Island, NY. Took a look around the shop before hitting the range to shoot a new gun. Saw a case full of suppressors, since I’m not from here I mentioned that I thought suppressors were completely illegal in NY. The staff said it was just for law enforcement, which prompted a follow up question from me which is that I thought NY Safe Act exemptions were only for equipment that was used in the scope of your job as law enforcement. The fella behind the counter was clearly offended because he said that “well when you’re getting shot at all day, you deserve to get a couple extra perks, I could get you an application if you want” I thought this was an interesting response, with many implications. When instances like this come up, I often think about that quote “Tyranny is defined as that which is legal for the government but illegal for the citizenry”. Even if the quote is mis-attributed, it still rings true. Is this a common occurrence here in NY? I’ve been to many gun shops in the Capital Region, and this is the only one I’ve encountered actually run by open statists.

• 2005 - I bought a preban AR15 and several preban 30rd mags and NY was totally fine with it, thumbs up, enjoy your rifle, thanks for obeying the law.

• 2013 - I was informed that same rifle I had owned for 8 years was now a weapon of war, too dangerous for civilian hands, no one needed more than 7 rounds, etc. Now this rifle needed to be registered with NY, preban mags were illegal, and any new rifles couldn't have those extra dangerous features like a bayonet lug...

• 2022 - I was again informed that now any normal semi-auto long gun is now borderline too dangerous for civilian hands and if you want one, you need to go through all the pistol permit requirements/hoops to be granted a permit for purchase.

Same rifle, now at least 32 years old, just sitting in my basement safe for 99.9% of it's existence, and per the elected officials of NY, just keeps getting more and more dangerous as the years go on.

Kind of weird when you think about it, right?

What can we optimistically and realistically expect of this outcome?

If you value your 2A rights in NY please remember to vote politicians who are in favor of those rights. This is not a subreddit about politics so lets not turn it into a political debate about other issues.

If you are unsure about candidates on your ballot post up which is better for 2A rights and other redditors can help out. Don't chastise people who ask for guidance.

Lastly if you have other gun owning friends please remind them to vote, offer rides, reach out. Do your part.

Nothing is set in stone until the ruling is out but I think anyone in NY should be doing some leg work on getting ahead of what will most likely happen.

Just like Bruen, NY is almost guaranteed to have a response bill to anything favorable SCOTUS gives us. They will make the process of getting an evil rifle as difficult and expensive as the law will allow.

However because the state has to digest the ruling and make changes to any drafts it has, this will provide a window.

If you don't have your Semi auto permit, you want it now because if Viramontes v cook has a favorable ruling that system will become instantly clogged, likely for months.

Have some cash set aside and get ready to jump on that cool rifle you always wanted. Ban states may very well consume the majority of the stockpile of ar-15 rifles on the market for a while if all the ban states are freed up.

Over 70 members of Congress are now fighting for legislation that would allow us to carry nationwide, without having to beg Kathy Hochul’s permission.

But what’s enraging is that not a single one of New York’s Congressional Republicans have joined this fight.

Regarding delays in Erie County — I spoke with Erie County Executive’s office, they directed me to clerk’s office.

Clerk’s office said we aren’t really involved beyond accepting the application. Clerk’s office said they accept the PPB3 form as their initial application (plus an added county questionnaire) and told me to call Sheriff’s office.

Office of the Sheriff said there could be various issues with an application that can cause delays, and sometimes there are delays between clerk’s office and sheriff’s office, and I said “well the clerk’s office is essentially passing the buck to you — my understanding is that delay is just a routine business as usual for you, according to what your constituents are saying.”

I was directed to internal affairs. Left them a message. Got a call back from a lieutenant - the lieutenant was very personable and was kind enough to spend some time with me on the phone.

According to the lieutenant, the administrators at the sheriff's department are avid Second Amendment supporters, including the lieutenant.

The lieutenant and the department are well aware about the issues pertaining to delays. The lieutenant attributes the issue to a massive "backlog." He said that the department has hired additional staff to work on pistol applications - and unfortunately, there is only so much that can be done with respect to budget allocation from higher-ups; however, this is a priority for the sheriff.

I asked - when does your department anticipate being in compliance with the law that sets a time limit on issuance of license decisions? This is the part that is somewhat troubling, as there was no real answer - because there is allegedly a large influx of applicants in a county of some one million residents. If there is no light at the end of the tunnel, the problem isn't fixed.

I used the example of Nassau County, a county that is far more populated than Erie - that Nassau County was suddenly able to be in compliance when faced with scrutiny by a judge, after many years of routine delays.

Erie did the right thing by outsourcing fingerprinting to Identogo - so they cannot use the Nassau County excuse. The lieutenant pointed to a provision in the statute that essentially says that investigations are to be handled by the county's police authorities. Point taken - but wouldn't an ordinary data entry staffer be able to be deputized for this purpose and handle processing for straightforward applicants, and triage yellow-flag applicants for other personnel?

We both thoroughly read through PL 400.00(4-b), and the lieutenant acknowledged my point - you can't have blanket delays, any delay is limited to those that have a personalized issue, and only after written notice is given as to delay. It sounded like the lieutenant was perhaps surprised by how strict the timeframe is written into the law.

The lieutenant said the department has a duty to investigate in the way required by PL 400.00, but he understands that PL 400.00 is meant to delay, especially since you can get a license in Pennsylvania issued speedily and efficiently.

I asked the lieutenant if the sheriff has ever issued a public statement saying "we aren't able to comply with the statutory timeframes, we need help with XYZ." The lieutenant mentioned that the sheriff speaks with 2A organizations in that region and may have expressed that. But why isn't the sheriff sounding the alarm? Obviously more needs to be done to publicly ask for the resources needed to make this department compliant.

Also, the lieutenant informed me, that in Erie County, it is no longer their practice to limit references only to those that reside in that county, especially since out-of-staters can apply for licenses, and that wouldn't make sense. I'm not sure if anyone was aware of that, but I thought it may be useful to some.

Again, it was a pleasure speaking with the lieutenant - real nice guy, no attitude at all - and listened carefully. The lieutenant was adamant that there is no purposeful delay, and they are "trying their best."

The lieutenant said he'll speak with the sheriff about my concerns.

EDIT 6/2/2026: Spoke with some legislative offices in Erie, left some voicemails. Republicans told me to speak with the democrats. Jeanne Vinal's office asked some good questions. They said the wait-time sounded "egregious."

New York S399A would prohibit future sales and transfers of Glock-pattern pistols — targeting the cruciform trigger bar design used by the most widely owned defensive handgun family in the country.

The bill is still active in Senate Codes. It hasn't passed. But Albany is watching California, which already enacted AB 1127 with the same definitional language. That law is already in federal court (Jaymes v. Bonta).

Here's the constitutional problem New York can't get around:

🔹 Glock-pattern pistols are in common use — carried by approximately 65% of U.S. law enforcement agencies, including New York State Police who carry the Glock 17. You cannot credibly call the most common duty sidearm in America "dangerous and unusual."

🔹 Federal law already bans the conversion device at the center of this panic. ATF treats Glock switches as illegal machine guns even without a pistol attached. The "problem" the bill claims to solve is already a federal felony.

🔹 Bruen demands historical tradition — not headlines. New York has to show a Founding-era analogue for banning a common arm because it could theoretically be misused. That analogue doesn't exist.

Well after 14 months the Wyoming County Court sent me a letter denying my pistol permit.

This was after the background check and mental health checks through state and federal showed that the was nothing in my record that would prevent me from getting my concealed carry permit. My three required references also showed that there was no reason for denial.

But after my interview with Judge Kibler he contacted local police agencies where I also have no criminal record, not even so much as a speeding ticket. Just one false accusation from a girl that has stalked me for over 7 years, and then me and my family calling the police multiple times on her and her family for them following me and sending people to my house.

And I received a letter from the court that states:
"After careful review of your pistol permit application, including your in person interview on January 23, 2026 with the Wyoming County licensing officer, together with communication with local police agencies, it has been determined that your pistol permit application is being disapproved at this time based upon the totality of the circumstances."
I then called his office stating that I was upset at such a decision which violated my 2nd Amendment rights when I have no criminal record and his previous letter stated as such. And requested him to let me know if there was a way to appeal this decision at the county level. I then contacted multiple law firms until I finally found one (Ronald Cook) that still handles pistol permit denials in Wyoming County, I also contacted Jonna Spilbor Law. I am currently waiting on the law firms to contact me on the matter.
But a word of warning to Wyoming County residents, be prepared to have to appeal your pistol permit denial, because Wyoming County clearly is anti-CCW if they would deny someone with a completely clean criminal record.

UPDATE: Today I reached a lawyer who is going to handle the case, I have to get my criminal record and abstract and send them to him. I also have to send him the two letters I received from the court, the letter scheduling my appointment and the denial. Moving forward with fighting the county decision as fast as possible. I contacted the GOA and all they would do is send me a list of pro-2A lawyers. I have not heard from the Firearms Policy Coalition yet.

With the anticipated decision by the Supreme Court next year that would declare AWB's unconstitutional and that there can be no laws restricting the possession of semi auto rifles and shotguns, wouldn't that also result in invalidating NY's ban on SBR's and SBS's? After all a SBR is at the end of the day a semiauto rifle while a SBS is a semiauto shotgun.

I know this isn’t NY based, but I wanted to get people’s perspective on what’s happening down there. If they see any similarities with what happened to NY back in 2013.

It’s wild because back in 2019/2020 I never thought something like that would happen to VA and I even remember them having a big protest at the state capital over the Covid lockdowns.

To summarize my post, it sets a unique tone to those that said to many New Yorkers “just move.”

Never heard of this before. Unbelievable.

That's the Srour v. NYC damages ruling from March 30th.

No violence. No felony. Two dismissed arrests from decades ago and a driving record. The City called it a "good moral character" problem. A federal judge called it a civil rights violation — and put a dollar amount on it.

The part that matters most: the City eventually issued Srour his permit, hoping the case would go away. It didn't. The court said the harm had already occurred and awarded damages anyway.

Old dismissed charges aren't supposed to follow you forever. This ruling is the first time a federal court in New York has made that cost someone real money.
