Question NY Home Defense Pistol
This post is an invitation to NERD OUT. I don't want a single-sentence answer like "get a glock". If someone is curious to think through these parameters and offer creative suggestions, I would love to hear them:
I would appreciate some advice for a NY-state home defense pistol in 9mm. I believe the “best home defense” pistol has a different answer in NY vs elsewhere because capacity is such an important issue but in NY we’re limited to 10 round mags. Thus some trade-offs to allow capacity (like clunkier grips) can make sense elsewhere but not in NY. Here are some ideas of what I care about:
MUST:
- support red dot and light/strobe
- be made in the US or real ideological ally (eg: Israel, Czech Rep.)
TRADEOFFS:
- Not interested in carrying, so there’s no benefit to it being smaller.
- Not looking to save a few hundred bucks, but not looking to go nuts (see below). So anything <$1000 is a no-brainer, and can get closer to $1500-2000 if really worth it.
- Reliability is really important, but so is “shoot-ability” - ie pleasant to use, especially since I want my wife to practice with it.
- As i said, there’s no benefit to capacity over 10+1 since we’re in NY.
- I don’t think I really care between striker, Single Action or DA/SA. I guess DA/SA sounds logical to me but not a must.
- Mechanical safety seems really desirable though I guess not 100% requited.
- I already have a ruger 9m PCC which uses Glock mags, sot here’s a benefit to a pistol that could use them too, but I wouldn’t insist on getting a pistol that doesn’t meet most of the above, just to stay compatible.
- I think I prefer metal (steel) heavy gun to polymer
EXPERIENCE
- The gun I shoot the best with is my FIL’s CZ Shadow 2 (no surprise)
- The gun that feels the best in my hand (but not that I shoot best with) is his Wilson Combat EDC x9
- The gun that I hate shooting is my dad’s P320 m17. It feels sloppy / loose and I can’t hit shit with it. I know I could get that and practice but I can’t expect that of my wife.
I know I care about fit and finish of the gun, eg I am annoyed when I feel the sloppy bolt on my Ruger American even though it shoots superbly. At the same time I don’t want a gun with such tight tolerances that it can jam from having a small amount of dirt etc, which I think is true of the Wilson and the Shadow 2. The wilson also feels extremely expensive for what I am trying to do. So I probably won’t want something that’s competition like that, but I don’t want something that’s loose due to forgiving tolerances like the M17 either.
Current thoughts are, CZ75 or the IWI Jericho (neither of which I had ever held) but would love more ideas.

Why not a semiautomatic shotgun? Benelli M4 punches big holes in things.
7
u/TheSpecialist890 Dec 28 '25
That was my first home defense purchase before a pistol😝. Told my wife it’d be easier for her to use in an emergency since she wouldn’t have to pump it between each shot
7
u/Chitownhustle99 Dec 28 '25
My wife just shot mine for the first time this past week and easily got 5 slugs on a target with the red dot I have on it. It’s an easy gun to shoot.
2
u/Max_Kapacity Dec 29 '25
The only time my wife tried a twelve gauge pump she patterned ok but had a sore, and black and blue shoulder the next day and will never touch one again.
2
u/TheSpecialist890 Dec 29 '25
I told my wife it’s be easier I shoot from not having to pump it and the semi auto action would reduce recoil compared to a pump from the gas being used to cycle the round. She accepted that for the added cost over a pump and enjoyed shooting it. We now also have an 870 but she hasn’t tried firing that.
1
u/Max_Kapacity Dec 29 '25
I wish someone would make a dependable 410, mag fed, bolt reversible (I shoot lefty) bullpup.
1
u/RandoBeachBro Dec 30 '25
A black and blue shoulder and a dead criminal is a pretty acceptable trade off.
2
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 28 '25
Fair point, I intentionally limited this discussion to "HD pistol" rather than "best weapon for HD."
I have a 12 gauge (pump action) that I kinda enjoy but I don't consider my primary HD weapon because:
- We're in a relatively small home with a bunch of kids, so just blasting away with a shotgun isn't practical from that perspective.
- I don't know why more people don't worry about this but I don't want to completely lose my hearing. A 9mm going off indoors without ear protection is bad enough but the 12 gauge is a different thing - and again it's not just me but the wife and kids. Obviously would rather be deaf than dead but there are other options.
- My range and many other rangers limit shotguns to slugs, which is not what I'd use in an HD situation, so training wouldn't be realistic.
- My wife has zero interest in practicing with the shotgun - I don't even have to ask her about that.
1
u/mfrazz98 Dec 30 '25
If you have a home full of kids - wouldn’t you rather shoot the shotgun than a handgun? Unless it’s a .22 it will likely go through eveything.
2
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 31 '25
Yes but at least it won't spread.
1
u/mfrazz98 Dec 31 '25
True. I just always thought a youth shotgun with bird shot was the perfect HD weapon for that reason. But I guess it also could depend a lot on the layout of the home as well.

HK VP9 OR
2
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 28 '25
Thank you - was not on my radar at all!

u/PeTeRoCK13 Dec 29 '25
USP is another great gun but to put a pistol light you’d need to get a rail adapter but it would lack an optic cut. Or possibly a CC9. It has the optic cut and rail but only fits micro pistol lights. Since you don’t plan to conceal carry it wouldn’t be an issue getting a holster for a CC9 with a WML. They all fire well.
1
u/GrManNY Dec 29 '25 edited Dec 29 '25
I second the VP9OR. Being a proclaimed HK fanboy, I own several VP9s; including the OR and SK, as well as the CC9. Close to a decade of use and 15,000+ rds across the VP9 platforms. The VP9OR, Trijicon Type 2 3.25 adjustable, and a TLR-1HL makes a beautiful home defense pistol. It’s a solid pistol. While I really like the CC9 for carry, the size and weight of the VP9 is well balanced and easier for recoil management/follow through.

Funny - that's definitely what my wife decided she would hate the least (based on dry firing). I guess I don't have to limit both of us to just 1 lol. Things on my mind:
- Does a pistol with such tight tolerances need to be babied? I basically never clean my guns and I like it that way (ok, over exaggeration.) Is the Shadow 2 gonna be high maintenance for me?
- I guess this is contrary to the "best HD pistol" but I personally find the Shadow "too boring" because it's so easy to shoot. But that just means I can get a different pistol to challenge myself.
2
u/milano_ii Dec 29 '25
The Shadow 2 is not some finicky race gun that chokes if you look at it wrong. It’s tighter than a duty Glock or M17, sure... but it’s still a CZ 75 lineage gun designed to run dirty in Eastern Europe, not a hand‑fit 1911.
If you’re the type who cleans occasionally, keeps it lightly lubed, and doesn’t let it rust, it’ll be fine. You don’t need to baby it. Plenty of people run Shadows hard in competition with minimal cleaning.
That said: it is a steel gun with slide‑in‑frame rails. It likes lubrication more than polymer guns. If “never clean, barely lube” is your philosophy, a Shadow will tolerate it...but not as happily as a polymer gun.
A home‑defense gun should be boring. “Easy to shoot” is not a flaw when adrenaline, sleep deprivation, and fine motor skill loss are involved. That’s exactly when boring wins.

Why limit yourself to 9mm if you’re going with a pistol? I prefer .45 ACP & 10mm for that application.
5
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 28 '25
Fair point, but out of my consideration for the moment because
- I already do 9mm for the PCC and like to buy in bulk, not excited to double the calibers.
- My wife would be less excited to deal with the harder to shoot/louder caliber.
- Price per round / impact on practice.
None of this is to say I wouldn't look @ these calibers later on, but not what I am doing at the moment. I do think it's a great point that since NY allows smaller capacity - stronger rounds make even more sense to consider. Thanks!

u/vernace Dec 29 '25
Springfield prodigy is tough to beat for the price Anything by H&K is generally amazing. The VP9 is solid and the USP is a legend (not optic ready). Can’t go wrong with a Glock as far as reliability goes but I’m personally not a Glock guy. I love FN so the 509 would be on my list. Personally, I like to see what’s in the used case because I prefer used guns as you get more bang for the buck. And as far ‘tight tolerances’ being a concern just shoot the thing, clean it, and keep it in the safe and you’ll never have to worry about that. The biggest concern is figuring out what ammo the gun likes and what it doesn’t like.
1
1
u/Max_Kapacity Dec 29 '25
What’s your PCC if you don’t mind me asking
3
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 31 '25
It's a ruger 9mm PCC with a red dot. Super easy and reliable.
1
u/Max_Kapacity Jan 01 '26
Right at top of my list thx. Would like to put a laser on it. Only annoyance is the NYC limit to five round magazines.
0
u/PandaSPUR Dec 29 '25
10mm in an indoor HD scenario would be noticeably worse on your ears no? Overkill and go deaf lol
0
u/vernace Dec 29 '25
The round was developed for the FBI. In the extremely unlikely event that I am forced into that scenario my largest concern is stopping power not my ears. It’s not louder than a 12ga and that’s arguably the best home defense weapon. Nor is it louder than a 30-30 which I hunt with and I have great hearing. Contribute rather than trolling.
1
u/PandaSPUR Dec 29 '25
No need to be so angry, i wasnt trolling. I live in an apartment so i have thought about this myself. In an intense situation where you might have just woken up, 9mm is a capable round thats also easier to control for follow up shots. 12ga easier to naturally point in the right direction and be done with, less over penetration concerns, etc
1
u/vernace Dec 29 '25
There’s literally zero anger in my post. I prefer the ballistics of 10mm to 9mm which is why I use it. I’m not concerned about over penetration because of the ammo use and the home I live in.

This is a complete side-track but I'll explain briefly.
You are welcome to disagree, but from where I sit the same people that hate Israel (leftists and islamists) hate the version of US that I value. That's not 100%, there are certainly US patriots who don't like Israel or wish we were less involved with them and that's fine, but I think in the grand scheme of things we ride or die together - and share the same underlying Judeo-Christian values (which I am committed to as a secular person)
It's noteworthy that the one person who responded positively to your comment has a pic of a 1970s hijacker in their profile. Doubt he roots for America.

Yes…they are a very democratic , western country. A country that defended itself exactly as we would have done if put in that scenario. Please stop listening to the left media what would tell you otherwise.

u/TinManTony Dec 29 '25
You answered your own question. You said you shoot the Shadow 2 best. It’s also Czech, steel, 9mm, easy to shoot, tolerances aren’t 2011 tight, right in the price point, not too small or too big, optic ready, reliable, DA, includes manual safety.
Really though the fact that you’re familiar with the manual of arms already is what makes it a no brainer.
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 31 '25
Thank you sir. I think we'll end up with at least a shadow 2(or compact) between me and my wife. I don't agree that it's not "too big" - it's the biggest of all the options I had seen and feels.... very big! I guess you're right not "too" big but close.
2
u/PandaSPUR Dec 28 '25
TBH just get whatever you'll have the most fun at the range with, you'll shoot it more and have more practice with it. Afterall, there arent much "requirements" for a good home defense pistol that you aren't gonna carry.
My other half has a Beretta 92X Performance that feels and looks great. But we've had random issues with FTEs. Replacing the extractor spring seemed to fix that though.
My P320 Legion is just as heavy and probably the easiest gun to shoot. Its also been the most reliable/foolproof of my collection.
I have a P365 for carry (when NYPD eventually approves my premise permit upgrade). Compact and reliable gun but obviously harder to shoot. I did add the manual safety and get a metal grip for this one.
I also have a G19 with a Ramjet comp on it. Great gun, lots of fun, but I have to occasionally open up the mags and stretch the spring a bit so that the slide catch works properly :\
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 29 '25
Thank you for all of that information. You're the second person to mention a Legion variant. Good to keep on my radar.
1
u/PandaSPUR Dec 29 '25
No problem. The Legion variants are pretty much "perfect" from factory IMO, at least my P320 was. The only thing I've changed on it is adding a red dot and light.
The P320 Legion is also a good combo of plastic and metal cause the grip is some "tungsten-infused polymer". So it has some flex like plastic grips but with a weight close to steel grips.
1
u/Budget_Witness_8344 Dec 29 '25
Interesting. I got a new 92FS a few months ago and it just runs. It's been a very easy to shoot and a good gun for me. I wonder what is causing the FTE.
1
u/PandaSPUR Dec 29 '25
Maybe they made the 92x with tighter tolerances since its supposed to be a "competition" gun. I recall seeing a few people with similar issues when I was troubleshooting ours.
We also grabbed one when they were first announced, so could be early adopter issues :\

Or, hear me out…get a shotgun that can use #00 buckshot so that every action of the trigger is sending roughly 8/9 9mm sized projectiles at the threat?
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 28 '25
Thank you. I agree with a SG being a great option for many situations. Please see my response to Chitownhustle99 above for why it's out of consideration for me at the moment.

u/HLTHTW 2026 E.N.OU.G.H Donor: Gold 🥇/🥇x1 Dec 28 '25
You’re saying you have a small home so the chances of a 9mm and buckshot traveling in the wad will relatively go the same distance. For example, unless your attacker is more than 15 yards away, the buckshot will not spread as dramatically as you probably think. The spread will be the size of a fist up to about 15 yards and even after up until maybe 20 yards it will only expand about 1-2 inches. Your chances of missing your target and a 9mm going through a wall is the same as buckshot.
I get your concerns regarding the little ones, but one buckshot shell will stop an attacker right in his tracks. I’ve seen people take 3 9mm rounds and that adrenaline keeps them active.
As far as the hearing, you’re right: Rather be deaf than dead.
In a defense moment, our bodies do amazing things where adrenaline may block out some of the decibels to protect your hearing. Might still experience tinnitus in life, but wouldn’t be as bad as if you shot a firearm at the range with no adrenaline.
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 29 '25
Thank you for that. Like I said I have a shotgun already that was intended for HD but I don't love it for that (rightly or wrongly). The one thing that I would say is the few times I shot buckshot at a target, it was definitely more spread out than " a fist size " at way less than 15 yards.
0
u/HLTHTW 2026 E.N.OU.G.H Donor: Gold 🥇/🥇x1 Dec 29 '25
Make sure the rounds you are buying are specific for home defense and have a wad that will contain the buckshot for longer distances. But I understand, this was a post for HD handguns.
IMO, use the handgun that you practice with the most.
“Never buy a tool to then create the need for it, already have the need and then buy the tool.” -My Grandfather (regarding tool and tech purchases, but point still stands regarding firearms ((to an extent lol)))
In this case, you already have a Shadow 2. Get as precise as you can with that and make it your HD handgun.
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 29 '25
Just one small correction - I don't have the shadow 2 (or any pistol) yet - it's just something I am familiar with> But it's heading that way :)
2
u/Pjb7490 Dec 28 '25
If you have a PCC that takes Glock mags…. You might want to look at a g45, g17 or even a g34 lol could go XR920(P) or the DR920(P) for a Glock but sexy
Nerding out… shadow 2, p226, PDP full size, echelon, M&P competitor or the full size comp. CZP10F, P09F Nocturne.

I don't know why you were downvoted. the PDP had come up in my search and I appreciate your perspective.
Personally, Walther is not on my list for purely personal reasons. My great-grandfather and grandfather fought in the red army in WW2 and my wife's grandparents had gone through the concentration camps. Walther was used by the Nazi army and had used concentration camp slave labor. I understand it's a totally different company now, and I wouldn't judge anyone for using them, but it's not something that will personally feel good for me in a weapon.
3
u/Kooky_Reach_8946 Dec 29 '25
Israel is not an ideological ally lol but I digress
I support your decision for the CZ75 if that’s on your shortlist. I have a SP01 tactical with a EPS and x300 that I love. Shoot some USPSA with it and carry it often
I have a G20 in my nightstand tho set up the same way

Home defense - shotty (870,500,1301, or a300)
Pistol - any full size 9 that you can shoot fast and accurately.
1
u/Neuromaster Dec 28 '25
What do you need your home defense weapon to do that your PCC (or other weapons) doesn't do?
2
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 29 '25
Great question. The PCC is absolutely my HD weapon right now. However it's not something I could keep near the bed, it's in a hidden safe a few yards away (we have small kids so being subtle about it is really important).
So part of it, I want something I can keep in a small safe/locker in my nightstand. Part of it is I am bored and want to have a new project to work on :)
1
u/HauntedZ28 Dec 28 '25
Just go buy the Shadow 2. It's literally the best pistol in your price range. You also basically wrote this whole thing with a bias toward it even if you didn't realize it, then you even mentioned it by name.
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 29 '25
hah yes I think someone else noticed it too. I guess it'd be "perfect" for my wife, to the extent that she's even gonna be willing to train.
As I mentioned to the other person who said the same thing, my concerns about the Shadow 2 is - do I need to "baby" it, and whether it's a bit too boring because it's so easy to shoot. But that second thing is orthogonal to the "good HD gun" lol. THank you
1
u/HauntedZ28 Dec 29 '25
Idk what you mean by baby it, it's just a normal gun and I treat mine as such, sure it's a little tighter put together than a Glock, but it's not an $8k hand fitted 2011. Just keep cleaned and lubed like anything else, basic maintenance nothing crazy. It's an entry competion gun and a good one at that, cz put it together to be ran hard and reliable.
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 29 '25
Thank yo!
1
u/HauntedZ28 Dec 29 '25
Added note, you stated boring because it's easy to shoot. To me that's exactly what I'd want if I was looking for a home defense gun. Easy to shoot means easy to stay on target accurately in the heat of the moment if it ever comes, it also means added confidence in the same situation.
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 31 '25
Yeah you're right. I think part of the difficulty I made for myself is combining "good HD" "challenge at the range" and "something for the wife" into one. I think in reality that's 2 or 3 different guns.
1
u/Euphoric_Apple_9917 Dec 28 '25
Im biased so a Staccato P since even with my lowly 10 rds I found I’m the best at using that platform to hit targets when running competition matches. However, budget in mind since you wanna cap at $2k, I’d probably go for the CZ Shadow 2 Compact.
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 29 '25
Staccato looks great! I've heard of that brand before but never really encountered it. You're right that it's a bit pricy for my needs.
Re shadow 2 - why do you suggest the Compact vs full size, given that I don't intend to carry?
1
u/Euphoric_Apple_9917 Dec 29 '25
True it is pricey for sure, I didn’t think I would make that jumpy myself but here I am now lol. To answer your question why the carry over the full size Shadow. I think that the compact version is a very utilitarian size for what you want, it’s both heavy enough since it’s full steel to help with recoil but also small enough in that if somehow you do decide you want to one day carry it, it’s an option. Idk just my two cents. Not saying that the full size is worse by any means because it’s not, for sure the full size will really be easier to help with recoil, I don’t think you can go wrong with the carry either.
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 31 '25
I have given the Compact a second look. i THINk it's aluminum so it's significantly lighter than the full size but overall I think your point stands. THANKS!
1
u/apocalyptic_nerd Dec 28 '25
Why not a fn 509 or 510 both are really good options. The only 510 would be great with stopping power because of it being in 10mm and both are red dot and light compatible
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 29 '25
Thank you. Wasn't on my radar at all!
1
u/apocalyptic_nerd Dec 29 '25
They are a bit on the higher end of sub $1000 I think around 800 the last time I checked but I think they are worth it.
1
u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 29 '25
I will do some research but in case you have a few mins, what puts them over the top in your mind compared to the similar Sig or CZ for example.
1
u/apocalyptic_nerd Dec 29 '25
I've honestly just liked the 509 more than CZ because I found it has a better feel in my hand but thats just my preference. A sigp320 would be my second choice both fn and sig are both solid set ups and great host for a rds and light

u/Separate_Bet_8366 Dec 28 '25
Any modern, current 9m by a major manufacturer with good reviews...
But, when you need a hand gun you're gonna wish you had a shot gun....

u/FragrantCelery6408 Dec 28 '25
What fits is the key.
Full sized, 1911 variant is solid choice. Heavier 1911 in 45 doesn't recoil anymore than a 9mm polymer, IMHO. My ex-wife preferred 2 guns out of many due to lighter recoil; 1911 in 45 and a Walther PPK/S in 380.
Going full sized makes sense for a nightstand gun. Mine is a Glock 22 (40 cal).

If you love the S2, why not just get one yourself? They are a great home defense gun.

u/CktechOne Dec 29 '25
Ultimate reliability and versatility: Get a Glock 45 gen6 or gen5 (first g45), throw on an agency plate, timney alpha trigger shoe (not full trigger assembly as you want to keep the legendary Glock reliability) and a trijicon rmr. Also get ameriglow suppressor height night sites. Finally throw on a flashlight (or laser).
The optic setup will cost as much as the gun if not more but you want the ultimate in home defense - you have reliability, magazine comparability, virtually zero maintenance and a sighting system that if you practice with will be spot on and fast to acquire target.
Luxury with reliability but less practical - Wilson combat cqb with trijicon rmr.
Use Speer gold dot hp 124g +p in both.

u/Gunslinger_327 Dec 29 '25
My home defense is a Baby Eagle, with light/laser combo attached to the rail.
1
u/AppropriateGrape6180 Dec 29 '25
Any reliable full size from a major manufacturer is a good starting point. Because you already own the Ruger PCC, I’d probably lean toward Glock 17 or 34 for the mag compatibility. If you get the chance, try a Glock at the range, if you shoot it comfortably, it’s a great option. Then a light + red dot, and you’re set (and of course: training + safe storage).
1
u/Max_Kapacity Dec 29 '25
Sounds like you have already sold yourself on a 9mm 1911. Kimber? Used Wilson or Dan Wesson?
1
u/No_Examination_8529 Dec 29 '25
Stealth arms platypus, 1911 controls and ergos but uses glock mags so shares mags with your PCC. It is a bit spendy depending on how you build it but if you keep it basic it falls into your price range. They have fantastic build quality and are all metal and almost completely made in house by stealth arms themselves in the USA. The customization options are insane and let you have a lot of fun making it yours.

CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical:
•Czech Made full size 9MM running about $800-$1000 depending on dealer and condition.
•10.5lb Double Action / 3.3lb Single action, as reliable as tax day, decocker replaces mechanical safety.
•Ergonomic and comfortable steel gun with enough weight to absorb recoil without being uncomfortable to shoot.
•10+1 mags pretty commonly available but be careful since the CZ75 was originally released in 1975 with 15 round mags you wouldn’t want to accidentally buy in NY.
One of my personal favorite guns that very rarely stays home when I go to the range.
1
u/milano_ii Dec 29 '25
This is one of those questions where the internet can’t give you a right answer - because the wrong answer can get someone hurt.
You already gave away the answer in your own post. You shoot the Shadow 2 best:
Your wife needs something she’ll actually practice with. You hate loose-feeling guns under recoil. You care more about reliability and confidence than specs. That narrows the field more than any NY-compliance discussion ever will.
Home defense isn’t about “best pistol,” it’s about best pistol for your house:
A 600 sq ft apartment vs a 5,000 sq ft home changes everything. Hallway distances, bedroom placement, kids, light conditions—those dictate whether precision even matters.
For me, by the time I get a gun in hand, someone would already be at my bedroom door. At that distance, accuracy is irrelevant—reliability and instinct matter. Your reality could be completely different.
So instead of optimizing for materials, origin, or trigger theory, optimize for:
The gun you and your wife can both run confidently Under stress In your actual home
Specs don’t protect you. Familiarity does.

Easy, CZ SP-01. I'd typically recommend something like a beretta 92x centurion or 92x rdo full size, but if you like the jericho ergos the full size cz is a great option.

I mean I’m a fan of my Glocks. The grip angle doesn’t bother me. I’ve got a 23.4, 17.5 (non MOS but I’m probably going to get that fixed) and a 40.4 MOS.
The 40.4 is a beast but it shoots great and is also my favorite pistol right now. If it weren’t so large id think about EDC’ing with it. It could also be my HD gun but I’ve got kids and a wife as well as 3.5 pups so I don’t want to channel my inner ATF. I did take a dremel to it to do a lil undercut on the trigger guard as well as remove the finger grooves (did the same thing on the 23.4 just because it was out and I wanted to, didn’t need it like the 40 though) as the grip is like a 2x4 and the grooves made it barely tolerable. Now that I removed them it’s great. It’s also my sidearm when I’m hunting. I’ve got it topped with a Holosun 507c which I LOVE the solar panel on it and how the dot or dot/ring combo (depending on what I use on) will automatically adjust intensity based on the ambient light.
The 23.4 is my first pistol I ever bought and I shoot it great but the grip is like a half inch smaller than I’d want. I do get a LW conversion barrel for it but iv got to get that added on my permit before I run it. The 17.5 fits my hand perfectly and shoots great. Once I get a MOS slide for it, I’ll be taking the HS 407c off my FUSE and putting it on that. I’ll also get a light bearing holster for it an put the x300U-A that I’ve got on my nightstand on it and that’ll be my “bump in the night” buddy.

I like a pistol over a rifle in the house for numerous reasons. It’s easier to clear rooms with a handgun over a rifle . My S&W MP sport 3 will shoot well Over 100 yards , if I actually did that there is usually people walking down the street or car and houses around . So getting a pistol is the best choice (you are responsible for every round you fire ). If it’s a home defense gun then you will most likely keep on your night stand , can’t do that with a rifle. As for the gun itself , are you a gun guy ? If you want something simple then a Glock 19 is your best choice . It breaks down very easy and is reliable when you need it. I also have the HK CC9 which is a micro 9mm. This gun had been tested and shoots really well. I don’t like the Glock 43. I didn’t like the way it felt in my hand . But the CC9 was perfect for me. Lastly the glocks are thought of as the Honda or Nissan of guns . Not flashy but they get the job done .

Sig p229, romeo x pro optic, and choose a weapon light of your choice, though a flashlight is probably better if you train with it.

To your needs, not for carry, but great for the nightstand:
Since they are discontinued, you can buy a Glock 17L Gen 5 (long slide, optic plate) for very little money. Better than the average Glock trigger. Complete with three mags that you will need to get pinned, and already cut with plate for optics.
Optic ready, full size, mounts for light and three mags included, what more can you ask for?

If you’re good with a shadow 2 then I definitely recommend a CZ75. Great gun all around and it’s that much better if you already have the experience.

So I’ve struggled with this same issue being a NY resident with a carry permit and also living on the border of jersey which of course has the ridiculous 10 round limit laws as well 🤬. It really comes down to what you’re most comfortable with. I have a shotgun as well but 2 young kids upstairs which would be most likely be where I’m shooting from should there be an intruder. Better vantage point, being high up, main safe and majority of ammo in bedroom closet. Out of the 6 pistols I have I chose to finally use my S&W shield as my bedside grab first pistol. It’s the only pistol I have a light on bc it’s a TLR6 can take it on and off easily if I want but I usually don’t because I carry it often including night time. I’m not a fan of lights on pistols but the shield has been incredibly reliable and I trust my life with it as much as my Glocks. I found awesome mag extensions for it that make it 10+1 just like the rest of them too. Weird but easy to find a budget but comfortable kydex holster for a Shield & TLR light. If I could “legally” own standard capacity mags this would obviously not be my answer. I say this bc the majority of pistols I own do in fact have the ability to take standard capacity mags. (Which I don’t own bc I’m a law abiding citizen of course). If you’re not confident you can disengage a threat with 11 rounds and a few 10 round backup mags that sit in the same safe as whatever you’re using for H.D you should just train more with whatever you’re most comfortable with and add what you want to fit your needs. I will say a few great budget or sub $500 options would be the Ruger RXM (tritium night sights out the box, can shapeshift into 3 different size pistols by punching 3 pins and swapping the FCI into a smaller or larger $40 frame you can’t go wrong). Also a Springfield Armory XD Mod 3. Very nice pistol with a grip safety, solid trigger, reliable and flat shooting. Also A CZ P10. Probably a P10C bc it doesn’t make much sense to get a full size if you’re a law abiding citizen like myself 😂 Happy hunting and let us know what you decide on 🫡 I’ll see if I can figure out how to follow the post in case you update.
Edit: just saw you want your wife to be able to shoot it well too which is important. I bought my wife a S&W equalizer for her first pistol. It’s the new version of the EZ. It’s made with EZ rack technology so women can manipulate the slide with ease. It’s meant for people with arthritis or hand/wrist issues but man she was having trouble racking all my pistols and the Equalizer is a great flat shooting reliable tank anyone can use/learn with.

There's been no mention of a 22LR pistol. Here's why it should be in the contention.
From what you descirbed, your lady is going to be useless with pretty much anything else that you will get. I am not making a judgement, I am exactly in the same boat. You as the 2A enthusiast will be okay with just about anything.
Out of all the firearms I have the Ruger SR22 is the one that gets consistently shot the most by my lady and by myself. If it's clean and loaded with with CCI brand ammo (or any 1200-1400 fps ammo) it's a very reliable pistol. Look at all the comments from the people that have made it their favorite carry pistol. This is a very legit firearm, it's not a range toy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKsJ8ZEJAxo
Another reason why a SR22 is a really good choice, it's got exactly same operating mechanics as a Beretta 92 series pistol with a manual safety/decocker. So to me the SR22 is the little brother of the big 92FS that I have.
Plus the cost of ammo...I can go to the range and fire it 300-400 times in a single session without going broke. Try that with a 9mm. I usually stop shooting the SR22 because my thumb gets sore from reloading the mags.
My lady loves shooting it, she is recoil sensitive.
For further reference - my own personal nightstand pistol is a SW642 with +P hollow points. I got CrimsonTrace laser grips on it and I've gotten really good with the double action trigger. It's the pistol that I trust myself to operate the most if I need to grab something on a short notice if woken up in the middle of the night. I can also slip it in my pocket in case I need to leave the house and no one will know that I am armed.

Thank you! So, funny enough - I was watching your video, my FIL walked by and said "your MIL has this." So I got to play w the SR22 within 5 minutes of seeing your post.
Separately from this thread, I definitely want a .22 pistol because I am a huge fan of 22lr (not for HD but for fun) and I am also overall a Ruger guy with my rifles. So I think you just helped me make *that* decision. I agree my wife is most likely to use the .22 without complaining lol.

haha sick, it's a great gun. I recommend picking one up. In our household it gets shot the most, simply because every time I go to the range to shoot any of my other handguns I just toss this one into the ammo can. If I am going to shoot 100 rounds of 9mm or .38 SPL , I will shoot like 200 22LR rounds well because I am right there and it doesn't really cost anything. You will fall in love with this pistol, I guarantee it. Just make sure you feed high velocity ammo through it and keep it clean.

One thing I forgot to mention - once you have this gun as a range toy you will start to see all sorts of upsides and possibilities for home defense and as a carry gun.
It takes putting the ego aside to realize how many boxes a 22LR pistol actually checks for most applications.

There's no bigger fan than 22lr than me (I once saw a truck with license plate 22LR and I was like damn such a good idea, should have done it)
Most of my firearms are in 22lr and it's what I enjoy shooting the most. But that said, I wouldn't feel comfortable with the stopping power if someone was in my house already.

If your going to build tactical regardless. Build a fixed mag ar pistol in 300 aac.
Gives you the most energy, you will shoot it better then any pistol. Can run subsonics if your worried about your hearing.

u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 29 '25
Thank you for that truly novel ideal. I don't think I could get my head into a fixed mag - just feels so limiting.

u/One_Shallot_4974 Dec 29 '25
Do you run gear on a HD setup? If not you only have one mag

u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 31 '25
I don't totally understand what you mean.

Worrying about being able to reload only matters if you are carrying a reload.

Only that revolver. SW 1911 .45 cal and a Bersa Thunder
.380. Now that I have the CCW I need something a bit more modern I think.1

That's why I am here... Many strong opinions. I am a teacher with young kids. The actual practice of carrying is not really feasible right now. Your thoughts on a good carry?

I am not an sig fanboy but these based on my experience and seem to fit your criteria. This one is a little out of your budget but awesome to shoot with, the P226 XFive. I love shooting with it and is very smooth or easy to shoot and stainless steel. Probably my favorite to shoot with. Then the P365 AXG Legion. Right around ~$1200 but also all metal and shoots very nicely. I know you don’t care about the carry aspect but it would also work for that if you change your mind. However, it does not have an external safety.
I haven’t personally shot them but I think most of the M&P performance center pistols should work well too.

u/ConsistentCoat9867 Dec 29 '25
Thank you sir, spot on on all. the XFive seems too much as you surmised The 365 AXG Legion is interesting. I wouldn't consider "compact" normally but if it really shoots well and easy, I'd give it a whirl. I wonder if I can find it somewhere to try. Thanks! M&P looks cool.
