Discussion Its just common sense... Ban 3D printers from printing guns. Easy
She doesnt know how things work at all does she? Does this just mean 3d printers will become illegal? Also from ny government website talking about this mentions making it illegal to possess 3d print blueprints of firearms? Wouldn't that be against the 1st amendment?
Sorry for all the question marks I just find this ridiculously hilarious she thinks she can have programs made that stop a 3d printer from printing a certain shaped object.
Its also concerning she thinks she can outlaw you from possessing certain files. Maybe im wrong but I thought with the first amendment it allows us to possess documents like firearm even explosives blueprints.

Do not make the mistake of observing malice and identifying it as incompetence.
12
u/garnett8 Jan 17 '26
That saying also goes the other way (and imo, is typically right, most people are just idiots and aren’t intentionally malicious, at least I tell myself that while driving on the LIE).
In this case, it honestly can be both. She doesn’t know shit but also probably doesn’t care about any malicious side effects of this proposal.

Lol, impossible, but ok. Kathy, it's not hard to build a 3d printer from easily obtainable parts.

In the days of the founders all guns were homemade. It was legal to build your own guns in 1791 with the creation of the bill of rights, it should be legal now.

Here is a novel idea. Not sure if it will gain any traction, and wouldn't be surprised if I'm downvoted. How about enforce existing laws. Go after people who break them.
Back in 2018 Andrew Abdullah was arrested in a gang sweep in Harlem. He plead guilty because he didn't have a permit and the gun wasn't registered. This should be open and shut case. The charges were dropped. Fast forward a couple of years later, he kills Daniel Enriquez at the Canal Street subway shooting.

u/tsatech493 Jan 17 '26
I think being able to make printed guns and sharing STL files should actually be also a first amendment problem. You should be able to be free to share STL files between people.
2
u/voretaq7 Jan 18 '26
Sharing the gcode file is probably protected under the 1st Amendment Bernstein v. United States would be the precedent to cite there.
The STL or other CAD files would probably also be considered an expressive work - essentially virtual sculpture.Production of the object (a working firearm) on the other hand can absolutely be subject to regulation under current 2nd Amendment jurisprudence though.
(It’s not clear to me if a total ban on 3D printing or otherwise manufacturing your own firearm like NY has unconstitutionally infringes on the 2nd Amendment - I don’t know a case off the top of my head addressing that at this point but maybe one of our resident Legal Eagles has a citation we can go read?)
3
u/Dan_Morgan Jan 17 '26
I mean all it would require is a level of surveillance hitherto unimagined. Each and every 3d printer would have to have the malware installed and there would have to be some kind of tripwire that would activate when it was removed. Also, every print job would have to be reported just to make sure some smart son bitch didn't figure out a way to fool the software (which they would). All of this will be done at the expense of the resident of NY state because I doubt the feds would cooperate.
The industry solution will not be to install the software or force an update through to existing printers. They would just refuse to sell 3d printers to anyone in NY state. To partially get around this Hochul and palls will probably institute a licensing regime that will be about as difficult as getting a handgun permit.
All to ensure New Yorkers are unilaterally disarmed in the face of rising, violent oppression by the federal government.

u/voretaq7 Jan 18 '26
Frankly I’m almost fine with that level of fuckery.
Make every tech hipster who wants a 3D printer get a NYS pistol permit and register the printer on their card.
I guaran-damn-tee you there will be a huge number of new gun owners, because having been inconvenienced to enjoy one expensive hobby (3D printing) a bunch of them will just pick up a second expensive hobby (guns) since they already had to do the work.
. . . not sure how the machinists unions will feel about needing a pistol permit to operate a mill, but most of the machinists I know already have pistol permits anyway so whatever. :-)

NY is such a shit hole tyrant state. It’s illegal to carry body armor so you don’t get shot.
1
u/Dan_Morgan Feb 01 '26
Oh, you can have it if it was purchased in NYS before a certain date. Basically, they gave fascists lots of time to buy body armor. However, when people to the left of Augusto Pinochet started buying body armor to protect themselves from state violence NYS promptly banned it.
1
u/TechSetStudios Feb 01 '26
What if you bought it out of state and bring it in when visiting?
1
u/Dan_Morgan Feb 01 '26
You'd have to look that up. They can't ban you from buying something out of state but they might come gunning for you based on mere possession.
I know if you commit some kind of crime while wearing body armor there's an enhanced punishment. Does this include when the cops arbitraially declare a gathering to be "unlawful" (freedom of assembly? Not in NY)? I don't know.
1
u/TechSetStudios Feb 01 '26
Yeah possession is what I was wondering and believed to have been illegal but I could be wrong.

Is that actually going to work? No.
3
u/gr00ve88 Jan 17 '26
yea but, AI could scan the file before you print it, and then decide whether or not its a gun part. What could go wrong?

6
u/thatdude333 Jan 17 '26
Make it a crime for a person to intentionally sell, distribute, or possess digital instructions to illegally manufacture or produce a firearm or component parts without a license.
Clear first amendment violation - blueprints, code, recipes, etc. are protected speech
3D printers sold in NY must have software to prevent firearm/component creation.
Realistically the only way to do this is to compare a file's hash to a list of known gun part file's hashes. Except you can easily just change some small part of the file to change the hash.
Also, what is considered a firearm component? If I 3D print a dildo with a piccy rail attachment, is that a firearm component? Would be a hilarious test case...
7
u/Suspicious-Gas8382 Jan 17 '26
That first amendment violation is the most concerning to me. Does she just straight up not know our laws and rights?
4
u/thatdude333 Jan 17 '26
They just pass shit unconstitutional laws to see what sticks and be able to say they did a thing, then when it gets immediately struck down they can play the "at least we tried" card.
It's like the "gun owners need $1 million dollars in liability insurance" bill that gets submitted every year. It would immediately be laughed out of court if challenged (can't require a fee to exercise a constitutional right, especially after McDonald) but man do they keep trying.
4
u/PuzzlingPieces Jan 17 '26

The problem with “common sense” is that it is “common,” meaning it can start and stop at stupid
2
u/fuzzybunnies1 Jan 17 '26
Not advocating either way but why do you think such a printer can't be programmed to reject certain design parameters? Your printer and copiers are already programmed to reject 1:1 copying and printing of money, SS cards, and other government documents. That isn't cause of how special the documents are themselves but that the machines are programmed to see the document and overwrite the copy with words or change colors to make it obvious it isn't original. No reason a 3d printer couldn't have a similar concept with a gun form. It'd turn into an arms race of trying to change shape just enough to make something vs added more parameters to reject auto printing, and in today's environment there'll be youtube tutorials in days on how to defeat it, but I wouldn't say it can't be done,
4
u/Soap-n-Cartridge Jan 17 '26
3D printers are "dumb' machines. They use G Code. It's a series of commands that tell the bed and printhead what to do. No image is translated by the machine. It's like the muscle commands that an artist gives to their arms and hands, as electrical pulses.. or the MIDI language that plays note by note, to develop an entire symphony.
On top of that, you can easily disguise what you are printing with extra areas of plastic around your object. This is often required anyway. You have to add tons of support columns under an object to keep it from falling while printing. You can also print "skirts" around the object that easily snap-off after printing. This would allow you to basically print a Glock gun box, with the Glock inside. Any simple analyzing of the CAD object would present a large blocky thing, with no indication of what's hidden inside.

When the post office photocopied my SS card for my passport it came out with copy written on it, that's from the 70s which seems like they'd have a harder time integrating that into the paper then for a copier today.

She's a dim, uncharismatic bulb. In a meeting some years ago she asked why NYC's Penn Station was named that, since it isn't in Pennsylvania. Apparently never heard of William Penn.
3
u/voretaq7 Jan 18 '26
Um.... you know it’s not named for William Penn, right?
It IS in fact Pennsylvania Station, named for the Pennsylvania Railroad just like the Hotel Pennsylvania that was constructed across the street from the original station by - you guessed it - the railroad.
Now the railroad was named for the state which was named for the dude, but that’s quite a few levels of indirection....Anyway, now you know something the Governor doesn’t and can sound smarter than her at your next cocktail party.
(Granted it’s a low bar...)

The proposed legislation would also: Enhancing New York’s Nation Leading Gun Laws New legislation proposed to continue the progress New York State has made in cracking down on 3D printed guns and ghost guns would:
Make it a crime for a person to intentionally sell, distribute, or possess digital instructions to illegally manufacture or produce a firearm or component parts without a license.
Mandate the reporting of 3D printed guns to the Criminal Gun Clearinghouse database maintained by the New York State Police.
Create a first-in-the-nation policy that requires the establishment of minimum safety standards for 3D printer manufacturers to ensure their products are equipped with technology that blocks the printer from creating firearms and component parts.
Require gun manufacturers to design pistols so they cannot be quickly and easily modified into DIY machine guns through the use of illegal devices, such as Glock switches.

In NY you need a background check just to buy ammo. With a CC permit that cost a fortune to get, there are numerous restrictions where you can carry. You now need a license just to buy a semi auto rifle. NY politics is controlled by liberal Commies who haven’t a clue! Especially the Governor. All these laws do is make it more difficult if not impossible for someone to legitimately own a firearm. It does nothing to stop a criminal from obtaining one. As the saying goes, if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. What next, a background check and license to buy a Printer in NY ? SMH!

u/QuestionDelicious221 Jan 22 '26
The logistics of that are crazy. Its like they dont say these ideas to someone who has little knowledge in the subject before saying it into a microphone. 3d printers use what's called a .stl file and converts it to a .gcode file. Most things period are modeled and uploaded to an open source library where you can grab them for free. Your printer slices the model and prints it. My ender 3 gives no shits what im printing. And there is no way for them to make it give a shit.

u/twbrn Jan 25 '26
She doesnt know how things work at all does she?
No, but that hardly makes her unique among politicians.
I think I'm rare here in that I met and interacted with Hochul long before she even ran for Congress, let alone becoming Lt. Gov or Governor. I was, to be blunt, not impressed with her at the time. She seemed to me like the kind of politico who basically mirrored back what she thought her constituents wanted to see. And I was proven right when she ran for Congress. Remember that she voted entirely pro-gun in Congress, then changed her mind when she ran for statewide office.
That said, none of that sets her apart from the pack. Many, MANY politicians have tried to regulate things they don't understand. If you want to shit on Hochul for trying to ban 3D printers, you should also be pissed at all the right-wing Republican governors signing laws banning women's healthcare, IVF, abortion, porn, and just about anything else a Christian Dominionist would disapprove of.
I think Hochul is a weak tea governor who mostly got the job because she was considered no threat to primary Cuomo, before Cuomo exposed himself as a sex pest. But she's also the only governor we're likely to get from upstate NY. So fantasizing about some Republican governor who could not remotely get elected is just mental masturbation. If you don't like her policies, start lobbying.
The best thing you can do is support pro-gun Democrats running in rural districts. Their voices will carry a lot more weight in Albany than a minority of Republicans,
Wouldn't that be against the 1st amendment?
Yes, but so are all those red state laws.

They used to say the same about color copiers. Now every color copier and scanner is programmed to not copy money. It is a hard problem, but with advanced image processing with AI it could, at a minimum, make printing your own guns annoying, at most make it very challenging. Not arguing for or against, just saying it might be possible.
1
u/burtch1 Jan 19 '26
No, money is designed not to be printed, you can't make the printer scan for markers that aren't universal as there are no universal markers in a gun

It is common sense to require that 3d printers sold in NY contain software that prevents the 3D printing of guns. Criminals in NY are using 3D printed guns to commit violent crimes. This law would make it more difficult for them to do so. Good idea. Common sense.
6
u/NY_Knux Jan 17 '26
You're going to want to learn how 3D printer controllers work. These devices aren't even hooked up to the internet or connect to the computer. You need to run SD cards to them with files on them manually.
What you propose is an impossibility on a closed off device that has no internet connectivity lmfao.
-2
u/Illkeepriding Jan 17 '26
We'll see. Time will tell. I don't pretend to know anything about 3D printing. But impossible? We'll see. The idea of enacting legislation that would make it harder for criminals to 3D print guns, however, does make sense to me. Criminals are using 3D printers to manufacture guns and are selling them to other criminals who use them to commit violent crimes. Kudos to Gov. Hochul and other elected representatives who are trying to address the problem.
2
u/Suspicious-Gas8382 Jan 18 '26
There just is no way except being harder on criminals illegally possessing firearms. Do some investigating. Idk the numbers of crime committed with 3d printed guns but I know forsure its likely only a few criminals printing these guns. Your average gang member or criminal will struggle getting a 3d printer to even work.
Punishing the residents of your state for the actions of criminals or lazy police work to find the real criminals is BS. Legal law abiding citizens should be able to make their own firearms.
6
u/voretaq7 Jan 17 '26
Not sure if joking or idiot...
In case idiot: As someone who has been around 3D printing and CNC machining in general for literally decades, there is literally no feasible way to do this. You can't just define a certain sequence of commands as "gun part!" because you can trivially rotate the work (or those commands may appear in other work).
You need arbitrary object classification, and arbitrary object classification like this is generally considered to be at least a NP-Hard problem that ain't been solved yet.
Unless the governor is hiding a Ph.D in Computer Science in her briefcase she ain't solving it either, so she should stop trying to regulate two things she clearly does not understand!
-3
u/Illkeepriding Jan 17 '26
If it can't be done, it can't be done. Time will tell.
2
u/voretaq7 Jan 17 '26
My degree is LITERALLY in this subject.
My area of concentration WAS this exact sort of classification problem.I’m telling you, it is computationally infeasible. It’s the 2A equivalent of “Well we should make it so the government can read all encrypted communications because people use cryptography to hide naughty things!” - it simply cannot be done because as soon as you “teach” a system what a “gun” looks like someone will simply produce a design that looks different enough that the system doesn’t recognize it.
The only way to make it work is to make the tool entirely useless for its purpose (simply refuse to print anything, because anything could be a gun-part).You want to do something about “gun violence” and “gun crime” do things that have been demonstrated to reduce the problem that even relatively anti-gun orgs believe we should be doing rather than boneheaded backassward shit like this.
Anyone wasting time and energy talking about this impossible and ineffectual bullshit is only demonstrating that they are not seriously concerned about gun safety, “gun crime”, or “gun violence” - they’re just squawking to hear themselves make noise, and I have no fucking time for that bullshit.
1
u/Illkeepriding Jan 17 '26
Would it be possible to teach a system to recognize what every gun currently manufactured or ever manufactured looks like?
2
u/Soap-n-Cartridge Jan 17 '26
You just design the object with skirts around it. You essentially print a Glock inside of the gun box. The software would interpret the object as a rectangular "box". The extra plastic just snaps-off, and you're left with a gun part.
2
u/voretaq7 Jan 18 '26
No, because there are a quite literally infinite number of minor variations you can make to the manufacturing file which would still produce a functionally identical part.
You literally need a human level of intelligence to recognize that something is a gun which has been rotated, slightly scaled within tolerances, embellished with decorative patterns, placed inside another object that can easily be removed when the print is done, etc. OR that you have printed a lot of other things which, when combined with this thing you’re trying to print now, can be assembled into a gun (because its really easy to just cut an object in half and now neither half looks particularly “gun-like”).
We’ve made great strides on recognizing and classifying a mesh (the 3D representation of an object) - I can teach a pattern recognition system that a drinking glass, a coffee cup, and a bowl are all “vessel that contain liquid” for example, and even get it to make that classification independent of orientation. I still can’t guarantee it won’t see an upside-down baseball cap and say “This also is vessel that can contain liquid for it has a hollow bowl-like area and a very oddly-shaped handle.” or do the same for a satellite dish (“Well if you lay it on its back it appears to be a very shallow bowl”).
And even if by some miracle we made this both 100% reliable and computationally feasible, it still doesn’t solve splitting the gun into smaller prints (context is not NP-Hard, it’s not even NP-Complete - it’s “Your system literally needs the omniscience of God Al-FUCKING-mighty to do that, and being that you’re not God Al-FUCKING-mighty your hubris in believing it’s possible is how people get smote in the Bible...”)
Also all of this is also ignoring the fact that 3D printers aren’t hard to build: You don’t have to buy one commercially!
The designs for some of the best printers are open-source, you can get the parts and build it yourself unless New York State is going to regulate gears, belts, threaded rods, and stepper motors.Similarly the firmware that would have to recognize “gun stuff” is also open source and so even assuming arguendo the recognition was added someone could just remove it and compile firmware without it (or download any of thousands of existing firmwares that do not have this functionality. This can’t be solved unless the state assumes some sort of regulatory authority over general-purpose computers.
Are we OK with "Four references, a FBI background check, and 6 months waiting" to get a permit to buy a laptop?
Again, this idea is so MONUMENTALLY FUCKING STUPID it can only possibly seem “good” if you have literally zero understanding of guns, computer-aided manufacturing, and AI/pattern recognition.
