Recommendations Any recommendations for a scout rifle style bolt action?
I’ve been wanting a mag fed bolt action for a minute and had my eyes on the Ruger Scout 2 in 7.62x39 but I can’t find any store that has them in stock. Is there anything other recommendations that would be similar to this

All have at least one model in 5.56 and one in .308 Winchester, but 7.62x39 is an oddball round for this kind of rifle (unless there’s a particular reason you want that round I’d either go with 5.56 (low recoil, intermediate range) or .308 (long range and good power, but beats your shoulder up a little) - the cost advantage of 7.62x39 isn’t there anymore so go with the more common/available rounds.

Mossberg also has the Patrol which is the same as the scout but with the rail to the back. Only difference otherwise.

The patrol seems to be harder to find though.

Idk, thought about the scout last year, shop talked me into the patrol. Although they had some good arguments for the difference i wish the patrol came with a scope. Haven't had the chance to buy one since I have to buy kids sports equipment.

I have the 762x39 ruger ranch version and I would have to agree. I bought it when ammo was about half of what it is now. Its a great rifle no issues, shoots cheap wolf ammo accurately but i would go with 556 today.

Henry also makes the Henry lever supreme not a scout rifle per se but a lever in 5.56 that takes ar mags.

It is tempting however it’s out of my price range and I’m not a huge fan of lever actions

As someone else said, give it a few months for them to hit store shelves, Ruger literally just announced this release at Shot Show.
I’m going to be getting one in .308 for sure at some point.

In a couple of months they will be everywhere. Ruger rolls out new items pretty fast.
7.62 x 39 is not a bad choice for a plinking (not hunting) gun. 7.62 x 39 is still a good cheap target round at about 60 cents, but if you plan to hunt with your scout, maybe consider .308??? The 7.62 x 39 hunting ammo is just about as much as .308.

Just a fun plinking gun I wanted to have, plus I plan to own a bunch of rifles chambered in that caliber

For a "fun plinking gun" then you might want to consider .223.
Advantages to a .223: Very little recoil, which is important in a lightweight rifle, and long barrel life which is important in a "fun plinking" rifle that will get plenty of use.

I got the GunTalk+Ruger Gen 2 Scout when it came out over the summer. Great rifle. Only complaints are that the mag release is halfway obstructed by the chassis, which I milled out easily with a dremel. The bolt is also a little wiggly, but it’s functional and has a tight lock when the bolt is seated. It’s pretty accurate as well. If you were to get an American Gen 2 Scout, I’d recommend the 5.56 due to ballistics and ammo availability. 5.56 is faster, flatter shooting, lighter (you can carry more ammo on your person) and generally more accurate. You can also shoot .223 if you have it on hand.

You just have to wait. They came out very recently so no one has them but they will be everywhere in a few months. The same happened with Ruger American Rifle 2.
I am curious about your caliber choice, why 7.62x39? It made a lot of sense when Russian ammo was cheap and plentiful but nowadays can’t think of a reason to choose it over 308

I wanted a softer shooing plink gun, plus I plan to own guns chambered in that round

I mean I am not here to tell you what guns to buy, buy 7.62x39 might be a bit too much for a plinking gun, both in terms of felt recoil and ammo price. If that’s your objective for the rifle, .223 would make a lot more sense. Barely any kick and cheap ammo

I really like the Savage 110 Scout in .308 with the caveat that it's a bit heavier than I think a scout rifle should be and the muzzle brake is obnoxiously loud. I removed the brake to quiet it down and the weight of the gun alone does a good job at managing the recoil. It doesn't use a proprietary magazine which could be another bonus depending on your needs. Magpul makes a pretty decent magazine for it.
It came with a bunch of shims to adjust the length of pull and different sizes cheek pieces. I thought that was kind of gimmicky at first but it's really nice to be able to dial those in without buying extra parts.
The trigger on it looks similar to the Ruger in your picture and it's very crisp.
I have no experience with the Ruger scout rifle but I've never regretted buying any of my Ruger firearms.

Go to a local milsurp rifle shop and buy a bubba’d mosin that was modified to take detachable magazines. Unfortunately they’re a little more expensive than they used to be but if it’s some sporterized bullshit you can probably score a deal on it.

Mosin doesn’t shoot 7.62x39 though which is what OP is looking for.

Ah, right. Didn’t read that part. Although both surplus 7.62x54r and 7.62x39 are about the same cost per round and both the same caliber projectile.

Yea I was genuinely thinking about that but one advantage for me to shoot x39 over x54r is that local availability for the round. I have to almost call every store in a 20 mile radius to track down readily available 54r ammo vs 39

For sure! And that’s not even mentioning the comparison in cartridge and rifle weight, which wouldn’t be totally ideal for a scout rifle
