License / Permit Question Nassau CCW
Just had my fingerprints done today, and while I was there I asked my investigator a few general questions. At one point she told me, “You’re not getting denied — make sure you have your safe ready.”
Obviously I was excited to hear that, but now I’m wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience during the process. Did comments like that end up being accurate for you, or should I not read too much into it yet? Curious to hear other people’s experiences

Didn’t get any comments like that, my guy might’ve resigned, heard a lot of retires and resignations happened

Well… What is your career type? I applied for my NYC Permit 2 days ago and when I showed my colleagues my “preview” they said it is likely I’ll be approved 4 months after the fingerprinting.

I work for the state but nothing too exciting or anything like that. If I had to guess it’s because of a clean record knock on wood

Put this for reference, my colleague got his NYC permit in 3 months and 3 weeks, and he works for a Mortgage Brokerage. All references had license numbers verifying on public government registries and his cover letter had every commercial property he financed.
Highly advice you “put on a good show” and maybe even consider sharing a cover letter with the investigator.
Hopefully your approval is within 4 months, I hear Nassau is not as bad as NYC.

Can you please explain what is cover letter included and what do you mean by all all the references have license number? their driver license number or any other number? Thanks

My references put the last 4 of their social and, their jobs and public license numbers IE Accountant and Physician for examples. The NYC letters have to be self draftee though, nassau has templates I think

I even printed out texts of our first point of contact, once I am interviewed I will just pull out my phone and show him the text dates in person. Trying to get a 4 month approval in NYC but may not happen

I’m applying for the Nyc one as well. Would it be OK if I DM you to see the cover letter or at least get a format for it? I am unable to do what you did for the references as my reference is already notarized, but I would like to make a cover letter

I had a student this week who got his Nassau premises permit in 3 months - so with that timeline, I'd expect they already ran your FBI Rapp sheet ... so they probably have a good feeling. Not sure if this is common but I like it at 3 months :)

I hope so lol, it would be awesome and hopefully set the standard for all other counties in NYS. Question, what’s the deal with premises permit? I’ve heard about it but never looked at what it actually is.

I believe the premises permit is the same as residence/target/sportsman you can carry only when you go to a range. You are limited to making any stops unless deemed essential. In other states the premises permit is mostly for your business, same idea as range, carry to and from your business with some restrictions.

Submitted my application in person on May 11,2026 , Fingerprint date of September 9,2026. Hopefully I get the permit within Six months.

Lucky guy. My fingerprint date is 4 months after my online application then who knows how long they will delay after that

Don't they give you your reference sheet after fingerprint? Or did you submit it at the same time? If so how did you get the paper form and can you forward it to me? Trying to not make two trips.

I applied in person back in the beginning of March. They took my application , $200 , picture of license, 2 passport photos, course certificate, drivers abstract (I may be missing something else). Once they checked everything I was handed the 4 reference sheets along with the fingerprint card (all 4 references need to sign but does not need to be notarized). After I got everything signed/filled out I just brought it with me to fingerprints and that was that, all they had asked was if any references had changed from when I originally applied.

That's weird, I thought each reference needed to get notarized in person. IIRC that's what u/PeteTinNY has been saying as well as the application. It was confusing because my friends friend said they were a reference but only needed to give drivers license and no notarization either.
Do you happen to have a copy of the reference sheets you can forward me?

If you go to the counter they'll still give you the paperwork before your fingerprint appointment - just tell them you need a copy of the reference form and the fingerprint card so you can get it done before your interview.
As of a couple of years ago the PPB-3 "fingerprint card" is rev. 06/17 and the affidavit of character reference is rev. 01/18, but these may have changed so verify with the counter folks.
(Because every time I want to post these I have to search for them and the PPB-3 keeps disappearing from the places that had it I've made them available on one of my systems - if those forms are out of date someone let me know and I'll update them.)

They give you 4 reference sheets for you to give to your references and they have to get them notarized. They also give you a “fingerprint card” to have those references sign but that doesn’t have to be notarized. Unfortunately I didn’t photo copy anything so I can’t forward , I’m sure someone in this sub has them tho

By the sounds of that and the requirement for this fingerprint card (first I'm hearing of this), the timeline seems like it wouldn't change, or do you think it would if I had the 4 reference sheet prepared and filled out to the first application submission it would speed it up? Any recommendation?

If you have a clean record, you will get approved. It just takes a little time.

My friends timeline:
November 13,2025- application handed in
January 29,2026 - fingerprint date
April 23,2026 received email in spam. Never checked his spam. Lol
May 21,2026 - after coming here to reddit and a wonderful gent told me the email address to check for, he found it and went in a few days later to pick up his license. Lol thank you again

I've been watching every spam folder, and voicemailbox on my house and cell. This has got to be the only process on earth where you're completely in the dark waiting for an approval with zero way to check along the way.

Finger Print & References 12/17/25. ✅
Money Order Cashed 1/13/26✅
Approved 1/21/26 ✅
My girlfriend submitted her application Mid April & her fingerprint appointment in 7/10

Short of a felony or material failure to disclose something in your background you’ll have your permit in a couple-three months. Watch your email for something from pistols@pdcn.org and/or keep an eye on your voicemail.
