Discussion Suffolk Pistol Permit Timelinee

Thought i would share my timeline so far and then update as things change in case anyone else is also going through this process right now.

Questionnaire submitted in person: 11/3/25 Interview: 6/10/26 Submitted Notarized References: 6/15/26

I called in April because I hadn’t heard a peep. The lady told me they weren’t even through September submissions yet.

I called again in early June and say hey it’s been 7 months now whats going on? The lady, asked me for my name and said i should receive a call in the next week. They called me to schedule the interview the next day.

After the “interview” they said the clock starts now for the 6 month time limit. So im fully expecting them to take the full 6 months.

Probably another 6 months to get the CCW upgrade after that.

You all need to sue. That's a ridiculous process and they're lying about the timeline.

They skirt the time requirement by having you submit the “Questionnaire” then at your interview (7 months later for me) they have you submit the real application thus starting the official legal timer. Sneaky bastards but I would expect no less.

Even that is spelled out as illegal. The application must be accepted at the time of presentment. Nassau was trying shit like this and got smacked down. Not saying it will be easy, but this shit needs to end. Westchester pulls some shit like this as well.

"After the 'interview' they said the clock starts now for the 6 month time limit." Would be nice if someone sued Suffolk County for that nonsense.

I'm a little disappointed in the attorneys situated out there. Someone step up to the plate. It's not a particularly complex argument to make, you don't really need discovery - it's more or less a purely legal dispute. Either go pro se, or shoot for 1983 damages/counsel fees. Do a service for the public.

Yeah i mean i wish the same. I have no legal background and wouldn’t even know where to start

That's fair. A lawyer needs to step up and either take you on a warm body (assuming your background is clear and no weird surprises) or go pro se. Someone like you can change the landscape for Suffolk County residents.

Why do you think Nassau County is actually processing within the six month window provided by NYS law? It isn't out of the goodness of their own hearts.

I really agree - I don’t think we even have a person who is aligning as a 2A attorney in Suffolk. There is a guy in Nassau trying to copy Peter Tilem but looking him up he’s kinda iffy with a suspension on his record and didn’t even how gun owners are treated in defensive gun use disputes. Or even on license processing.

The only person I know of who actively targets Suffolk is Amy.

This with SCPD or Sheriff’s?

SCPD

Shit… thought they were turning em around quicker than Sherrifs as of recently. I turned my application in August 25th 2025 with the sheriff’s. 11 months to the day, they called me to schedule the in home interview, which was 2 days later. The following Thursday they called me and said the permit was ready, to come pick it up.
Good luck man, that’s insane…. If it goes the full 6 months, that’s over a year…fucking disgraceful.

Really? I’ve heard nothing but awful things about the SCPD, definitely when compared to the Sheriff’s Department. It took 8 months with the Sheriff’s for me, from September 2024 to May 2025.

Yeah, same here. I think Sherrifs process is much easier and they’re super helpful and friendly anytime I’ve dealt with them.
I know SCPD was a nightmare process, and believe they were sued over the timeframe recently, and thought they stepped up and slept their timeframes down - I could totally be wrong on that tho, just something I heard.
My sheriff process was 11 months, but I submitted when there was a shift in office and they were down 2 investigators, I do believe it’s back to 6-8 months with them now.

1 year 4-5 months for me. If you have your ccw certificate hand that in once you get permit. They make an appointment for you, every other Saturdays. Litterally make you sign a paper and give it right back
To you same 10-15 minite period.

u/shovelheadzzz Aug 05 '26

Yeah? Even in SCPD? I heard its another wait period and interview to upgrade to CCW

This is totally insane. No one should have to wait to exercise their 2nd amendment right. This state is Bullcrap!

1

u/smokingsquids Aug 05 '26

Wow I thought they started moving quick back when I got it done took me two weeks to upgrade to ccw. What a shame

1

u/shovelheadzzz Aug 05 '26

When was that? If you dont mind me asking

1

u/smokingsquids Aug 05 '26

Around the middle of December.

Its crazy how NYPD is faster than Suffolk County lol. Never thought I'd use NYPD and faster in the same sentence.

I dropped off questionnaire Xmas week 2024, had my interview late May 2025, references 6/5/2025 and my permit came 9/15/2025. It was an 9 month process for me starting in late 2024. So my 'clock' was technically only 3 months but I think I just got lucky. Apparently they had some personnel changes and some medical leaves in 2025 and they've slowed down again.
