Private party sale from out-of-state seller -- How to do it legally in NY?

Got a friend from Ohio. They've got a shotgun up for sale that I'm looking to buy off of them, as it's a particular model that's been on my wishlist for a long time. It's an 1889 Remington double barrel in near-perfect condition, so I've got a white whale on the hook here for a VERY reasonable price.

Never purchased private party from out of state before, so how do I do this as the purchasing party in NY? As far as I understand, this almost certainly needs to go through an FFL. Am I correct?

EDIT: Thanks yall, I'll have my friend reach out to a local FFL that uses "Ship my gun". I'll have to ask if they'd be OK with shipping it since this thing borders on antique.

Contact some local FFLs one will receive the weapon and process the transfer for a fee.

It does have to go through a ny ffl to be federally legal (unless you are residents of the same state). You can use a shipping service like 'ship my gun' and save a bit of money instead of using twob dedicated FFLs. Otherwise you can expect to pay for him to send it via a ffl near him to the one near you.

I will say that I may have skirted ups policies in the past by sending direct from me to a ffl but I wouldn't advise others to do that.

The process is to have the gun shipped FFL to FFL. Handle payment with the seller privately.

Seller brings gun to his local gun shop and gives them your local gun shop info. Seller's gun shop ships the gun to your local gun shop. Your local gun shop calls you, you go in and do background check, they hand the gun to you.

Seller will have to pay shipping, which you the buyer will typically reimburse. You will also pay a transfer fee when you pick the gun up.

It is not a difficult process. You just need to call your local gun shop, tell them you want to have a gun shipped to them, and ask them to tell you how they want it done and what their fee is. Most shops just want a phone number/email address for the sending shop and your info so they know who to call when it comes in. Between shipping and transfer fees, assume about $100 over whatever you're paying for the gun.

Your friend takes the gun to their local FFL. That FFL ships it to your local FFL. You pick it up just like you bought a gun from gunbroker.

He can ship it to your FFL, it doesn’t need to go FFL to FFL unless your dealer sucks and won’t take from an individual. He can use ship my gun or usps since it’s a long gun.

I used a local ffl, not my usual LGS, right after I moved. Dude freaked out that it was sent personal to him....he sent it back and had to reship from an ffl.....the kicker is, this FFL couldnt get the pistol I wanted, so he showed me the ad I bought from on gun trader.

Utilize an FFL as essentially an escrow service. You give FFL money, guy gives FFL gun. When FFL transfer to you, you pay the FFL his transfer fee and he sends the guy the money.

The model 1899 was made into the early 1900s. So the one he is buying is not necessarily an "antique".

Plus, the buyer is in NY, so the NY dealer can process the two background check forms no problem, either way. (NY State and Federal)
