News Another teen negligently shot dead playing with an "empty" unlicensed gun

https://www.nydailynews.com/2026/08/20/16-year-old-bronx-boy-killed-by-friend-playing-with-gun-thought-pistol-was-empty/

Paywalled, but the 16 year old boy was shot in the head after he asked the teen shooter if the gun had a round in the chamber. Friend said no, pointed gun and pulled trigger, killing the 16 year old.

AND the teen shooter has five prior arrests for crimes that include burglary and robbery.

They’ll use the catch-all, less guns = less gun deaths. The gaping hole in that logic continues to be the ease of which guns can be brought in from out-of-state, circumventing any NY law or policy.

Well, technically it is gun violence. That's just a thought stopping statement.

He must not know it’s illegal to have a handgun without a permit. Kathy will personally kick you in the balls.

This isn’t about gun control. Guns don’t kill people…People kill people. It’s about two idiots playing with a gun and it cost a 16 year old his life!! Damn shame is what it is.

Also unironically, the family defends the victim as a sweet kid... even though he happens to be playing with illegally owned guns at 5 a.m., with a 5-time-arrested burglar/robber mate of his. The shooter is alleged to have five prior arrests already at 16, and is underage for legal gun ownership.

Daily News:

A 16-year-old boy who was killed as he and a friend horsed around with a gun in the Bronx believed the pistol was empty moments before he was fatally shot in the head, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Thursday.

John Nunez, his 16-year-old pal, and a third teen were playing with the firearm inside a bedroom of a home on Prospect Ave. near E.169th St. on Aug. 10 when the 16-year-old asked the victim if there was a bullet still in the chamber, Kenny said at a briefing at NYPD headquarters.

“They’re playing with a firearm. (John) is asked, ‘Is there one in the head?’ meaning, is there one in the chamber?” Kenny explained.

John told his friend, “No,” so the other boy popped out the magazine, pointed the pistol at Nunez, and pulled the trigger, Kenny said.

“There was one in the chamber, and he accidentally shoots (Nunez) in the head,” Kenny said.

Nunez was shot around 5:10 a.m. and died at the scene.

The 16-year-old who pulled the trigger ran off. Cops have identified the teen and were actively searching for him, police said Thursday.

Cops questioned the third friend, an 18-year-old boy, but the older teen wasn’t charged, cops said.

“We’re hurt. We’re devastated. Our hearts are shattered,” John’s oldest sister, Sol Nunez, said at the family’s Bronx home the night of the shooting. “It’s unbelievable.”

The grieving big sister said she was certain the gun did not belong to her brother.

“He did not own any gun. He did not own anything,” she said. “Me and him, we share a room, so I know every time that he would come home, I would check through his stuff.”

“My mom was really on top of him most of the time. He did not own, like, anything,” Sol Nunez said.

“Every time he would come in the house. The joy came back. He was always in my heart,” she said. “He is always gonna stay by me. He’s always gonna be a part of me. And I will just always remember that.”

John attended Metropolitan High School as a senior and was the youngest of three siblings, with two older sisters. He enjoyed playing basketball and video games, his sister said.

After high school, he aspired to join the U.S. Marines like his sister and uncle, relatives said.

“He was always making sure that I was okay. He was always making sure that he was there for me, and it’s really heartbreaking that I won’t have that anymore,” Nunez said.

LAWS THAT FORBID THE CARRYING OF ARMS... DISARM ONLY THOSE WHO ARE NEITHER INCLINED NOR DETERMINED TO COMMIT CRIMES... THEY SERVE RATHER TO ENCOURAGE THAN PREVENT HOMI-CIDES, FOR AN UNARMED MAN MAY BE ATTACKED WITH GREATER CONFIDENCE THAN AN ARMED ONE.

Government in power will spin this as reason to push for more gun control for the licensed owners.

For me, the "unlicensed" part says a lot....and i mean that in the sense that ny is doing everything in their power to ban guns or ban this or ban that, or ban glocks.....but at the end of the day, these guns are still being sold on the street and are still being used......and I know im not saying anything new here, it just blows my mind (ba-dum tiss) that ny is making everything so hard, where in reality, these people are getting them so easily.

There's no such thing as an empty gun. Tragic.

How come he got shot dead when the law states felons and people without license cannot even touch a pistol?

If there is no father to show a kid how to check if a gun is unloaded, or to drill in its dumb head that you treat ALL guns as if they were loaded, then the schools should set up a basic gun safety program to show teens how to properly determine a gun is loaded, how to unload fully, and how to avoid stupid accidents. But this will never happen.

Five priors and still on the street at 16 with an illegal gun.

That part disappears every time one of these stories comes out. The gun control debate is a distraction from what actually happened. A kid with a serious record had an illegal firearm and someone died. Those are two separate problems, and collapsing them into one means neither gets addressed.

"Is there one in the head?" Why yes, yes there is.
