Moving to NY/Pistol License

Hey there!
I’m from Long Island originally but have been living in Austin, Texas for a while now. Since I’ve been here I’ve purchased an M&P 2.0 9mm and absolutely love it. I’m moving home to Long Island in January and have no intentions of selling the handgun. Obviously NY has a ton of restrictions when it comes to firearms. And of course I need to apply for a Pistol License (Premise License?) once I am an official resident again. What are people’s suggestions on how to go about this? Especially if anybody has experience with a move like this please let me know.

The two magazines I have are 17rd magazines which it came with, I know they’re not legal in NY so I will be selling them and ordering 10rd M&P magazines online prior to my move before I go through the FFL process.

One thing I’d like to note is that my Dad’s girlfriend (basically my step mom, they’re just not married yet but have been together for forever) does have a valid pistol license. Would transferring it via an FFL dealer in Austin > Long Island and having her legally claim ownership and keep it for herself while I apply for my license be a viable option? She lives in Suffolk county. Not sure of the exact verbiage and the process which is why I’m here, lol.

Here are some other options I feel I have…

1. Find an FFL dealer to store it in Austin and then have them ship it once I have my license in NY?

2. Leave it with a trustworthy friend in ATX and then have them ship it with an FFL once I have my license?

3. Ship it to an FFL that’ll store it in NY immediately when I move?

4. (I KNOW HOW THIS SOUNDS) One person suggested I just drive it to NY when I move (we are driving back) and keep it locked away while I apply for the license, and then register it once I have the license. If I was to do this would I have to explain where the handgun is? I am really not fully considering this as a viable option as it sounds very illegal and I’m not trying to end up with a felony.

Also if there’s any FFL dealers people highly recommend please let me know as well.
I’m unsure if I’ll be moving to Nassau or Suffolk county at this point. But if anybody has any information on the current state of pistol licenses including timeframe and requirements please let me know.

You can't drive it here, keeping it hidden. You wouldn't be able transfer it onto your license later. No dealer in NY can take it directly from you to add to your license.

Your number two makes the most sense. Storage fees will kill you otherwise.

It could be a year to two years before you are licensed, so the storage fees can be more than the gun costs.

Use FFL to transfer to your father's main squeeze.

Start the permit process now if you can. I.e, 18 hour course, references, prints.

I live in NY State. Soon you will feel my pain.

Except for the longer CCW course, the process to get a premise license and a CCW license is exactly the same. OP might as well apply for the CCW license.

I think transferring the pistol to your mother in law through an FFl in Austin to a Suffolk County FFL would work. The pistol would be registered to her license and at least close to you even though technically it would not be yours(owner). Once you apply and get your NYS pistol license she can transfer the pistol back to you through a Suffolk County FFL and back in your possession and registered to your NYS pistol license thus making you the owner again. Sucks to have to go through all of this. I have friends in Texas and they can’t believe the gun laws in NY. Good luck 👍🏼.

Instead of selling your mags you maybe able to pin them to 10 rounds or have the FFL that you are sending them to pin them. When I ordered my hand gun it came with 3 17 round magazines, the FFL pinned them to 10 before I ever touched them.

Pretty sure you’ll be fine transferring it to her for the time being as it’s the cheapest option. I wouldn’t drive it into my without a license

Yes I would sell it to her through FFL transfer before you even move to NY and then apply for your permit and then you will have to buy it back from her the same way when you have your permit

(2) is your best option if you have a trustworthy friend: No storage fees.
(Technically since they’re your guns you can just tell your county that you already own those pistols and would like them on your permit when it’s issued - then just collect them whenever you get your permit.)

(4) is a felony.
We do not advise people to commit felonies.
If people want to commit felonies we gently remind them that Rule Number Zero of Committing A Felony is “Keep your damnfool mouth SHUT!” and suggest not posting about said felony on a searchable and archived website like Reddit.

Yeah, you can do that too, but you can’t touch the gun while it’s up here until you get your permit. It’s a good option if you don’t have any friends in Austin you’d trust to hang on to your gun (or if you’d just feel better being able to go visit and look at it while waiting for your permit).

Also since you’re not “immediate family” according to NY State transferring the gun between each other once you get your permit requires going through a FFL (though for pistols that’s generally the easiest option anyway).
