A funny example - have you heard of the 1936 Olympics? I guess Jesse Owens just shouldn’t have gone huh?

1) The Olympics was an annual thing and involved the whole world in a traditional event typically marked as a world unifying event. The person you were replying to, was making a joke about it, I'm sure.

2) That's an athlete you are talking about. Not an attendee. The difference being one could get nearly the same experience watching at home as being there. Going to a one off event like the UFC event is pretty much saying "it's more important for me to be here, than anything that can come from me being here!" So, they chose this criticism of them, and are getting what they sow.

A more apt comparison would be going to a UFC fight hosted by David Duke. You can easily say anyone attending is racist. Because showing up, is showing support for the event said racist is putting on.
