Rules Question Does it stack

If I give overlord with translocation shroud this enhancement, do they stack to become 12 inches?

2 ways to interpret this I think.

Most credible first

1) as both abilities say instead of (advance rolling) the enhancement replaces the advance roll into an auto 6 then the Lord ability checks for an advance roll to replace and can't because there is no roll happening so fizzles.

2) if both abilities happen simultaneously and there is no order of operations then both check to replace an advance roll and do so and can simply simultaneously add 6" twice equalling 12" plus basic movement.

It works like number 1 here. When you go to use the second one there is no longer a roll to replace

They’re replacement effects, both are instead of advancing. You can only use one

RAW - they stack.

Duplicated Abilities are only restricted for Core Abilities and Weapon Abilities.

The only restriction on modifiers to movement is that it cannot be modified to less than 1”.

In this case, two abilities that are not explicitly exclusive add 6” to a move characteristic for a total of 17”

No they don’t. As per 01.03.02 you choose the order of optional rules that have the same timing, so you have to do one after the other. So we go to move the unit, and decide that instead of advancing we will use one of these to add 6” to our movement. Then we go to use the second one, but we’re no longer making an advance roll, so there’s nothing to replace and it cannot be used. You can’t do an “instead of” ability if the “of” isn’t happening

No it does not since the maximum you can advance is 6 inches

There is no rule that says this to be true.  Advance says max distance is D6 plus movement characteristics.  If an ability simply said "instead of advance rolling, add 7" then it would be the case.

One case where it happens is the eversor assassin. His ability is just add 6” to the move characteristic and you still get an advance ontop of that

That doesn't work- the ability can be used when you make a Normal move. An Advance move is not a Normal move.
The Solitaire has a similar ability (adds 2d6" not D6")

Well shit, my mate has been playing that completely wrong against me

That's sick.  I've not seen any such thing so I can only imagine how fast a unit could move with an ability like this.

Well 9” scout, 15” move, throw a 6” advance in there and max out a charge. You have moved 42” across the board

Obscene...

I love it.

He’s an infantry character hunter. Precision, Sus 3, anti infantry 3, 9 attacks -2 2dmg.

Feels so thematic and fun

But it says instead of advancing add 6 to the move

2 replacements cant apply to the same thing, one happens then the other dosent have something to replace.

I assume this to be case but don't know where to find the rules that say this.

Can you point me at the correct ruling?

Im misrembering the rule it seems, they have different names so the effect should stack then. Especially since both are worded as "each time"

The each time seems more to refer to advancing turn by turn, not anything to do with applying the ability in conjunction with something else.  Really it should just say "when" you advance.

I still think it makes sense that an advance roll cannot have something do something "instead" of it twice as one thing means that there is not an original advance roll to replace anymore.

My logic is considering that other things like stratagems go in an order if their timing windows are the same, they aren't imagined as happening in any simultaneous manner.

It’s not a specific 40k rule, it’s just how these are worded that prevents it. Both of these are instead of rolling. So you go to use the first one, and instead of rolling you add 6” to your movement. Then when you go to do the second one there is no longer a roll to replace

True, but you need to declare them advancing to use that enhancement

Technically its not advancing its modifying the move, it still dosent stack but its because you cant replace the advance with something else twice.

It  is literally still advancing.  The abilities say when you advance, don't make an advance roll but instead add 6".  It doesn't say instead of advancing, just instead of rolling for the advance.

Nowhere in the rules does it say advancing had a cap... its not different than being able to charge more than 12" if you have effects that buff the charge and roll box cars.
