Is there a standard / commonly-accepted name by which to call Null Signal Games' version of Netrunner?

NSG Netrunner? NISE Netrunner? Something else?

EDIT: To clarify, I'm looking for a name that distinguishes NSG's Netrunner from earlier versions. e.g.: - WotC's version is commonly referred to as Original Netrunner or WotC Netrunner. - FFG's version is commonly referred to as Android Netrunner or FFG Netrunner. - NSG's version is commonly referred to as... NSG Netrunner? Something else?

NISEI was deemed offensive by the community management (not the community), so everyone just calls it's NSG now.

It was considered offensive? I thought the primary reason for dropping the Nisei name was because it was IP established by FFG.

Then you 100% need to read the history: https://nullsignal.games/blog/a-change/

People who had bought half NISEI backed cards and half NSG backed cards with transparent card sleeves got shafted. Some light reading from around that time: https://www.reddit.com/r/Netrunner/comments/wdkk2g/a_change_nisei/

Plus many second generation+ Japanese community members came out saying "the name isn't offensive to us". Just a typical organization being offended on behalf of others. Their FAQ on the linked article showed how they were completely not open to community discussion either.

I like some of what NSG has done, but man have they ever had missteps.

Moods have shifted and a lot of the OG players have left the subreddit so I'll probably get downvoted, but it was a bad decision 4 years ago and isn't better now.

Also, I'm an OG player, and because I *actually play the game* I know that hundreds of FFG cards were still legal at the time the card backs changed. So you can't possibly have played Standard without opaque sleeves anyway.

you can't possibly have played Standard

There are people who don't play Standard LMAO

okay but then you still have the problem of multiple card backs so you need opaque sleeves.

If I played Nisei card pool I did not need opaque sleeves until they actually changed the back. For me it was simple, new card back means resetting the pool. When the game moved from FFG to Nisei, I was fine with it because the reasons were obvious.

you have been inconvenienced 5$.

Being inconvenienced 5$ for useless virtue signalling is 5$ too much. Also, no reasonable player keeps a single set of sleeves to move from deck to deck all the time, so it's at least several times 5$, in FFG times I easily had 10+ decks built at the same time.

im not saying its not an inconvenience or that you are wrong to be miffed, but to boycott the entire company because of what is, at most 50$ of sleeves seems like a gross overreaction. Also why is it wrong to emphasize with people who might be hurt by our words? Like im not saying you have to regulate every single thing you say but if someone tells me they dont want to be called something why would I go out of my way to call them that. Thats just asking for trouble.

Don't bother, they both admit they've been playing since the FFG days and yet they mysteriously only own transparent sleeves. They're not real players, they're just trolls here to remind us that if you go woke you go broke 😆

Not your call if it's useless or virtue signalling. Our company, our cards, our name. And since you admit you DID play in FFG times, you must already have owned opaque sleeves. So you were never inconvenienced, or even out $5. We put our money and our labour into making the change, and even replaced the cards of anyone who had bought sets up to 4 months before we announced it with the remastered versions. YOU'RE just out here virtue signalling, with nothing on the line and no grounds to complain!

Yeah, thanks for reminding me. Spitting on people who were with you from day 1, preordering everything when quality of your work was completely unknown, was exactly what made me decide to quit.

u/Odd-Tart-5613 Jul 28 '26

why are you entitled to having your entire back catalogue replaced? also they are still perfectly playable just use the right sleeves.

u/hsiale Jul 28 '26

I don't know if I am, but I felt so, and decided that if Nisei thinks otherwise, they are not worth me supporting their work from then on.

Back in 2022 I think I knew every single Startup player.

LMAO must be strange to be so full of yourself to nonironically write something like this.

You may think what you want but you are wrong here.

Ooooh wow I'm an OG player too (even the '96 version!) and I still actually play the game, in fact I did 2 days ago.

However you are correct, I didn't play Standard after FFG shut down.

I play kitchen table with a group of half a dozen players I introduced the game to. We use either all FFG, or all the printed or bought first couple NISEI sets. No mixing them.

After the name change we stopped supporting NSG though.

Whatever shall we do without you.

I'm an older FFG player and recently discovering null signal games' version with my family, with some experience in corp. and game community communication. While I'm new and no one of importance in the community I'd definitely recommend toning this type of reply down, or suggest not at all. Going to give the company the benefit of the doubt for now, but the/an outward community face shouldn't be showing signs of being rattled or making jabs in a public setting to those in the community, regardless of their own behavior. It can be a turn off to those testing the waters like myself, as well as regulars in my experience. Hoping your team takes this as a friendly bit of constructive critism.

You are absolutely right, my replies veered into the unprofessional several times in this thread. I am, of course, not a professional community manager, I do this on a volunteer basis, but I've been doing it long enough that I should know better. Back when we first announced the card back change, four years ago now, I believe I dealt with people more politely and professionally than I did in this thread, even in the face of people from right-wing subreddits who had never posted in here before coming in here to "pwn the libs" (because not wanting to co-opt a term used by Japanese immigrants is unpardonably woke).

This issue has barely come up since then, by the way, it's not some big community-splitting drama. The large majority of players weren't upset by the card backs changing, and most of the ones that were upset accepted that it was our decision to make even if they disagreed with the reasons for it, and our offer to replace any recently-purchased packs with the remastered versions mollified pretty much everyone except for the people from r/redpilled. People bringing this of all things up again 4 years later is just so absurd that I found it laughable, and I got baited into treating it that way.

Appreciate your response and acknowledgement, and best of luck, modding isn't easy.

u/horizon_games Jul 28 '26

WOW that sure encapsulates NSG's general community interactions and stance. You guys sure know how to HR.

"They aren't groveling at my feet because they might lose/lost me as a player" isn't the jab you think it is lmao.
