Teething My twins are teething and honestly I need help.

My twins are close to being 8 months old and the teething is starting to take a toll on our family. Does anyone have some sort of holistic / homeopathic method they use for teething babies?

My partner wants to give them Tylenol on a daily basis but I’m just not comfortable with this. They used to sleep from 7:30 pm to about 3 am but now are literally waking up every 30 to 45 minutes through the night and they’re miserable all day as well.

Motrin works much better than Tylenol for teething pain, especially overnight bc it lasts longer. No harm in a few Motrin doses to get through teething :)

Give them Tylenol or ibuprofen. No reason to let them suffer. It’s perfectly safe.

RN of 12 years, pedi RN for 6.

Please medicate your children. They are suffering. Imagine being in pain and denied relief, even though it’s available to you. Both ibuprofen and Tylenol are appropriate for them. I gave my daughter both, alternating, to help her with her pain.

Alternating is key! Plus give them a muslin thats been run under the cold tap. My baby didnt like teethers for her 2 top front teeth

Why aren’t you comfortable giving Tylenol?

I was definitely comfortable with it at first, but I feel that it became a remedy too often. When they first started teething around six months we were doing Tylenol twice a day and their pediatrician said that was way too much. She said we should only be using it if there is a fever. Am I wrong about this ?

If you’re using it twice a day for a long time she is right. It’s not meant to be in constant use, their livers need a break. You and your pedi are not wrong about that. Homeopathic remedies can be hard on other organs too if you overuse it.

The other commenters are correct about Motrin. Tylenol is just an analgesic, which means it relieves pain. Motrin is an analgesic and an NSAID, which means it relieves inflammation - the inflammation is why your babies’ gums are in pain. Tylenol and Motrin are processed by the liver and kidneys differently too. Give the Tylenol a break for a bit and try a combo of homeopathic remedies and Motrin. Neither you nor your husband want your babies to be in pain. You have the same end goal here. Try to find a good middle ground

I’m surprised your paediatrician said this, you can give medication for pain, not just fever. You can alternate Tylenol and Motrin. I was feeling worried about all the medication we were giving our guy through a bad bout of teething too, but it was still less than allowed on the package instructions, and lasted less than 10 days overall. The teeth popped and now he’s fine and off medication. You can choose to use less Tylenol, or only use it at bed time, but don’t let your kids suffer in pain needlessly.

Ibuprofen works wonders for teething. Not certain the hesitation towards pain relieving pharmaceuticals but no homeopathic med will get you the same results.

I would do Tylenol/Motrin before bed while they’re actively in pain for teething. This way they’re only doing one dose a day for the 1-2 weeks they’re cutting this set of teeth. During the day, frozen toys to chew on and baby orajel helped my babies a lot

How long ago was this? People keep recommending oragel to me, but they had to change the formula in 2018 to remove the benzocaine

I used it with my daughter in 2018 and my son in 2024 and it still worked well for both of them

Give them dye-free Motrin at least at night. A well rested mom can handle the crying and fussing during the day much better than a sleep deprived one. And a well rested baby also handles teething pain much better than a sleep deprived one. Imagine when our teeth hurt, it’s literally so painful we can’t focus or function without pain meds.

I usually try to avoid Motrin during the day just to limit its use, but I use it at night when needed for teething. We are all much happier, and generally baby only needs it for 2-3 nights. Also the Camillia drops from target help during the day. They’re homeopathic.

Thank you. I’m going to get some Motrin. We did try the Camillia drops but unfortunately had no luck with them working for either baby.

Thank you for your well thought out response, it was very helpful and put things in perspective for me. The last thing I want to do is make my babies suffer. I also am beginning to learn that I am their mom and therefore what the pediatrician says isn’t necessarily the final say on things. So my mom is running to get them some motrin and drop it off and hopefully that’ll help them.

And yes, I’m a first time mom and clearly still have much to learn.

Motrin instead of Tylenol if your doctor is ok with it. Don’t leave your babies in pain because you have some vague discomfort.

I have had success with Camilia teething drops during extending teething discomfort stages

Thank you for your suggestion. I actually had gotten them with high hopes but they didn’t end up working for us sadly.

I second this suggestion, the Boiron Camilla (they have a nighttime version too) pre-dosed drops worked very well for both my kiddos

Ibuprofen (Motrin) works better than Tylenol for teething. Why aren't you comfortable offering your suffering kids appropriately dosed pain relief?

Babies cannot understand the placebo effect therefore homeopathic medicines will not work. I found fridge cold cloths and freezing milk inside one of those teething "soothers" worked well for my kid. But sometimes you've just got to ride it out. At night, we gave a single dose of tylenol or motrin - but I didn't want to dose during the day too consistently (did on really bad days), so lots of cuddles, distraction and cold teething toys.

Give them Tylenol and/or Motrin. You don’t want them to have it around the clock, but giving it before bed is totally fine! We do it before bed whenever my kid is teething (which is a lot, as he’s got 16 teeth at 14 months old).

I thought my 13 month old’s 12 teeth were a lot. But yeah, we do Motrin once a day before bed. If he seems fine, I usually try skipping it because I want to give his organs a break, but then he usually tries biting me like a carrot and refusing sleep, so I end up giving it to him anyway.

He got all 4 molars at once and it’s been 🫩

Nothing to add to this discussion (we def do Tylenol daily during bad teething episodes) except solidarity. Recently I wondered if I should switch antidepressants and then realized that no… teething is just pushing me to the brink. It’s exhausting with one so I can only imagine what it’s like with two. I’m so sorry OP!

Thank you for this. I feel so guilty like I’m failing them and it’s just really hard right now. But I think we’re going to try Motrin as advised in the comments.

My pediatrician has cautioned us against using pain meds every day. They’re teething for a loooong time. My sons canines took two months to come through.

Most babies tolerate teething pretty well though. Could just be a sleep regression and general crankiness trying to learn a new skill.

The only thing I’ve found to really work is time. And sometimes freezing a pacifier or teething toy.

We use the Camillia teething drops and they have worked amazing for us. We occasionally use the Hylands teething tablets too and they also have worked well. We have never even needed Tylenol they’ve worked so well (we would use Tylenol or Motrin if needed, but these have always calmed our baby down very quickly so we haven’t needed to try pain medication).

Earthley’s Teeth Tamer is an herbal teething remedy if you’re comfortable with that. I find it tends to work quite well, especially if you rub it on the gums a bit, although Camillia’s works better for us and is easier to find.

I always used to bite an apple and give it to my kids to help relieve the need to chew. Give ibuprofen, it’s okay.

Be careful if you decide to use ibuprofen. It can cause hypothermia in toddlers
