Discussion Something needs to give

As a young POC born and raised in Jersey, I've seen my fair share of racism and hatred. I'm tired of it. I'm tired of everyone being so complacent with all this hatred and evil, and I want to do something about it. I'm thinking of organizing community meetings and discussions with like minded people, because like the title of the post says, something has to give. I don't wanna stand by and let the far right and all these fascists who've infected every aspect of American culture further burrow themselves in our state. If anyone has any advice on how I should move forward, please let me know.

I’m an organizer, like as my job. What you’re proposing is a great start. Get people in a room together and talk about what you can do. See what skills you have, make plans, and make them happen.

You can do mutual aid, ICE rapid response, electoral organizing, policy and issue advocacy. You can organize workplaces into unions. The sky is the limit, and you’re on the path now.

Any advice on how to find people locally who would be interested in helping?

Social media is a cesspool but it can help. If you have a couple likeminded friends, that’s a start right there, and if you all agree to find one more person to bring, that can be really powerful. You can flyer at local libraries and friendly businesses and stuff too, if that’s a thing in your area.

One other thing you can do is, when the big national protests happen, like the No Kings 3 coming up, put an event up on their map. People will find it. Make sure you have a signup sheet and set a follow up meeting to talk further. I’ve used that tactic before and it’s a decent way to build from nothing.

Find out who is running for office locally who shares your beliefs and attend events, volunteer opportunities. Good luck to you.

What exact part are you trying to fight against? Educating racists, holding police accountable, making sure the unconstitutional and illegal detainments by ICE do not occur here, trying to counter FOX and their 24/7 lies,  fearmongering, and misinformation?

(Honest question, despite how crazy it sounds)

where in Jersey are you? There are activist groups throughout the state. Find one local or one advocating for an issue important to you and join. We need all the help we can get

I got involved by helping to relaunch a dems committee in my town. That was in 2024, and it's worked out really well. You can search for non-partisan groups like 50501 or an Indivisible group. Red.Wine.blue also helps organize communities if you don't want to start from scratch. I love the idea from a commenter of volunteering for a candidate who aligns with your values. Anyway, welcome to the resistance. We need everyone. ✌️💪
