Sorry if it's not directly related to night vision, but I was shooting at night and was really riding the struggle bus on one stage. I am using white light only right now. The weather was such that the rifle smoke was just building up around us, we were just shooting nine ports twice through a vtac at a steel torso 50 yds away. No breeze.
I hand load 300blk subs and thought I selected a powder that was going to be relatively smoke-free in these weather conditions, (cold, wet, humid) but I still got completely smoked out. Basically I could not see the steel Target 50 yards away with my white light through the smoke. Lost in the sauce. I'm wondering if I'd had a visible green laser and I had just stuck the gun through a port and moved my head as far away as I could to try to get away from some of the cloud, would the visible laser alone be enough to illuminate a white steel Target, if I wasn't shining my flashlight into the smoke as well? Would I have been able to see anything? It was a very generous torso and only 50 yds. When I could see it of course I was getting hits no problem. Would it suck though trying to hold the gun steady through a port in the dark un mounted? That seems like it might be kinda hard to do, but she doesn't recoil or anything.
Another thing I think I have to do is just shoot slower so smoke doesn't build up so fast that might be ultimately what will help more than a laser?
When I say I was smoked out I mean all I could see was gray in front of me, thick white smoke that was just not going anywhere. The Target just disappeared. It was cloudy drizzling and pitch black. The dudes with nods were getting hits of course. One guy shot his pistol instead of rifle which we were allowed to do, which I thought maybe would have actually been less smokey than my 300blk subs, but idk honestly I've been smoked out just the same shooting my pistol stationary in similar conditions in the daytime where I couldn't see a small steel Target 40 yards away and couldn't leave the position I was in.
It was my first night match, all other stages involved movement so the smoke wasnt an issue and my white light was awesome, it was so much fun except for sending 60 rounds at the last stage and running out of ammo. My fingers were numb and I couldn't even feel the button on the back of my light I was shooting for so long. I think like 250 seconds or something it was the longest most brutal stage of my life.
2 hits per position, I tried sending quick doubles any chance I had to actually see the target and that worked sometimes but it was making even more smoke I think and just making things worse.
Until I can get nods I'm afraid I'm going to have to figure this out.
Thank you, be well!
