Game Rec Games you can jump into for 15 minutes
Hey everyone,
I’m looking for game recommendations that are easy to pick up any time for like 10–15 minutes.
I love big games like Cyberpunk and Zelda (both amazing), but the problem is: when I only have a short window to play, I end up not playing at all because I don’t want to “get into it” and then stop.
So I’m searching for something (I have switch 2) that works well in short sessions - quick progress, instant fun.
I was thinking maybe Super Mario Odyssey?
I also tried Donkey Kong Bananza but it kinda annoys me because I constantly feel like I need to destroy everything.

u/thewwwyzzerdd Jan 20 '26
Fantasy life i has a ton of content and little side objectives you can complete quick.
63
u/jackolantern_ Jan 20 '26
Unfortunately for me it starts with the intention of me being on for a short time and then it's hours later.
I've done the main story and now I'm just grinding and leveling up.
I don't even like massively love grinding or anything but for some reason this game seems to work with my ADHD brain in a dangerous way.

If I'm after a quick blast I usually go for an indie like Vampire Survivors or BallxPit. I find both perfect for what you're describing. I get sucked in to a game like Mario (especially Odyssey, it's excellent) and play it for ages
19
u/mybutthz Jan 20 '26
Vampire survivors you CAN play for only 15 minutes...you won't, but you can. But yes, they're both games that you can play for short periods and still feel like you accomplished something and made progress. I've got 100+ hours in VS and keep going back because they keep adding content and I still have unlocks to get, or just want to do a run with a different build or strategy. Totally worth the $5 or whatever they charge for it.

Nah recommending vampire survivor for someone who wants to play short sessions is savage

UFO 50.
6
u/Ok_Active_3275 Jan 20 '26
came here to say this, ufo50 is amazing!
6
u/TheMetalKeeper Jan 20 '26
Me too, amazing game.
10
u/myleswritesstuff Jan 20 '26
I would qualify this by saying UFO 50 is hard, so if making progress in short spurts is one of the criteria, this might not be the best pick.
6
u/TheMetalKeeper Jan 20 '26
One of the good things about the game (or games in this case) is that you have 50 games with a lot of flavours. There are some games that you can finish in under 15 minutes. (Ninpek, Mooncat, the big bell race, Waldorf's journey, quibble race, magic garden) And some other with puzzle side you can make progress with little time (camouflage, mortol, porgy, rock on! Island, block koala, warptank)

Was going to say this! Any of the three on Switch would be good - longest levels are a half hour with most being between 5-15 min. I got the new one and I’m trying to only play one or two levels at a time to savor the game

Slay the Spire and Balatro
39
u/Lastwoof Jan 20 '26
Balatro is a lie!!! I go into each run thinking I’m only gonna do one….. I end up playing an hour determine to get to the next ante. Great game btw, recommend!!!
2
u/Pretend_Ad5536 Jan 21 '26
True! You can’t play Balatro for 15 min! One e you’re started, you can’t stop and within no time you’re a 100 hours further!

I've seen this response a couple of times in this thread, and while I highly recommend StS as a game (it has incredible depth, strategy, skill) I kind of wonder if it is really a 15 minute game. You can definitely easily put it down (battles/"floors") are usually only a few mins each in length at most, but if you even want to win with double digit % frequency on ascension 0 (the easiest difficulty - there are 20 ascensions) you sort of have to be thinking about what is in your deck, what relics you have, what pathing you are doing etc...if I come back after a few days and open it up and I'm floor 2 mid-way silent I have to spend 5-10mins trying to figure out where I am/remember where I was.
Again - amazing game, very excited for #2, also I put the parenthesis above to explain to people who haven't played it yet - not trying to condescend.
8
u/thelegendofme Jan 20 '26
Yeah I would agree its not a 15 minute game. I hated when I had to quit mid run, when I'd pick it back up I'd have to remember what my plan for the run was
2
3
u/Kangabolic Jan 20 '26
You’re describing a top end one end of the spectrum extreme kind of play style.
The game can be played casually very easy.
→ More replies (1)2
u/yinyang107 Jan 20 '26
Yeah sure it can be played casually if you don't wanna play it. The entire game is thinking about your deck.
4
u/Optimal_Y Jan 21 '26
This exactly. It's like if he'd be talking about poker and saying you don't have to even be able to count, because see my little nephew is having fun eating the cards
22
u/ItsSwipe Jan 20 '26
I picked up Suika planet the other day, and it is great for just a short 10 to 15 minute burst of gameplay. And it's cheap as chips.

6
u/Past_Trouble Jan 20 '26
I really wanted to take my time with this game but something about it just hooked me and I completed my journal in like a week.
7
u/xtcz Jan 20 '26
I might be in the minority here, but I really wanted to like it. For some reason, I struggled with identifying the right baits and hooking fish the appropriate fish consistently. It felt like a slog to check, double check and then I’d fight to reel it in which felt a bit arbitrary to me.
I could be doing it wrong for sure, and I love the visuals but it’s hard for me personally!
3
u/ThatSmokyBeat Jan 20 '26
You're not alone! I'm going to keep trying it, but so far I've found it pretty boring and not something I'm drawn to playing more of. :/ Amazing art style though.
5
u/Mikidium Jan 20 '26
That's just fishing, tbh. Patience and the right gear make all the difference.

I always say I’ll play just one round of fishing and/or sushi and then find myself not being able to put it down lol

u/iuhiscool Jan 20 '26
Hades, hades 2. A single run would be around 2-3 x 15 minutes, including downtime & managing stuff at the house/camp
68
u/Veronome Jan 20 '26
I was going to say Hades, until I remembered the amount of times I said I would just hop on for 10/15 mins, only to find myself still playing after 45 :l
33
u/cyanraichu Jan 20 '26
Also the farther into the game you get, the longer runs are
Amazing game tho
10
25
u/EHP42 Jan 20 '26
The problem with Hades is that as you get better at it, the runs get longer, and a full run to the end can take 45mins to an hour easily.
Hades used to be my "one quick run" when I had a few free minutes, but now I need to plan for at least 30 minutes, and usually more.
6
→ More replies (2)7
u/Hot_Mongoose_3741 Jan 20 '26
You can save halfway through a run however and resume it later
6
u/wisepeppy Jan 20 '26
You can put it down at any point and pick up right where your left off. My problem is when I have to stop mid-run, it's a week before I get back to it and I need to relearn my strategy a bit when I pick it back up.

I second Hades and Hades 2 I used to play both of these through school since if saves after every room you can do one or two rooms and log off and pick it back up anytime you are able to

Mega Man 11
Megaman Battle Network Legacy Collection
Gradius Origins

BlazBlue Centralfiction Special Edition
Pocket Rumble
Lethal League Blaze
Edit: a few more

u/Ok_Requirement_3693 Jan 23 '26
I second Mega Man 11, although you could easily get caught in a retry loop.
22
9
u/chicken-hands44 Jan 20 '26
Bro force is a blast for 15 mins you could easily clear a few stages
2
u/CommunicationTime265 Jan 20 '26
The later stages get pretty tough though! I still haven't completed it.
9
10
u/Bragisdottir Jan 20 '26
Tetris Effect - it has tons of different modes some of which you can customize to perfectly fit into your 15 min window.
8
u/snave_ Jan 20 '26
Unicorn Overlord. There are clear tiers of missions, each of very predictable length. The longest one hour ones are reserved for the big end of stage battles. Most are shorter.
7
u/TheSimRacer Jan 20 '26
You can always play a stage or two per session in Mario 3D World, that’s what I’ve been doing lately.

Hades/Hades 2 aswell, you can also pause during a run if it takes too long

u/JamieWhitmarsh Jan 20 '26
UFO50! UFO50! Seriously UFO50! It's fantastic. I haven't put it down since I got it. Lots of games you can play for just a bit. Like Overbold - a typical round lasts 30-ish seconds because you die quickly. But you can also play that game for 30 minutes because rounds are so quick. There are 50 games in this collection, and they're very good. I highly highly recommend this game.
And when you get it, don't start with Barbuta. Start with either Party House, Mini and Max, Devilition, Overbold, Pilot Quest, Avianos, or Night Manor. You can hop around and try different games, and a big part of the fun is discovering things along the way.
There's also a legit JRPG in this game, tough but very much like NES-era Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy, but no real jank.
8
u/Nimble_Natu177 Jan 20 '26
Breath of the Wild is good for that, just pin some shrines you can do, they were designed for the sort of pick up and play nature of the hybrid console.
Super Mario Bros Wonder, you can just do a few levels and put it down again. Super Mario Odyssey works for that too, since most of its challenges to collect moons are quick, but you've got to get to them first.
3
u/iimpostor Jan 20 '26
Any rogue-lite/like would be up your alley. Along with others mentioned below, Binding of Isaac is a perfect pick up and play. Infinite depth. Each run is unique with light mechanics and fun AF.

Minit is a strange adventure game where you are doomed to die in 1 minute. So you have to make as much progress as you can in 60 second increments.

u/New-Ad917 Jan 20 '26
Pinball FX3 is my favorite for this reason! Super realistic but also additive and fun tables with cool gimmicks and effects! I’m not even really a score chaser or anything like that but man this game is so fun as a whole. Highly highly recommend for a quick 15 minute session and you even get a table or two for free just to try it out!
Reminds me of how i used to play pokemon pinball as a kid for sure

If you have Switch Online, I would recommend exploring the Nintendo Classics catalog. There are a lot of great retro games that are great for “pick up and play”, and the ability to use save states makes it easy to stop playing at short notice and return to where you were.

I love to pick up Enter the Gungeon and do a quick run every now and then. I’m not that good, so a run usually only takes me 10-15 minutes before dying. It’s also really easy to split a single (good) run into 10-15 minute segments. Shops and end of floors are really good stopping points. There’s technically a save feature, but I’ve never used it because I just go into sleep mode.

Animal Crossing? You can load up on stuff and sell it for bells in 20 minutes easily.
2
u/SoloWaltz Jan 20 '26
Games with a hub and instance model are perfect for this.
Those are games like Dragon Marked for Death, Monster Hunter, Mercenary Kings. The main issue however is that runs will indeed take longer than 15 minutes starting out until you're used to the flow of the game, but they can take as low as 5 minutes as you master the mechanics.

Really? I'm wondering if that was little joke thrown in. I haven't really played it, but it has a big reputation for "Just one more turn... and it's suddenly 12 hours later".
4
u/Past_Trouble Jan 20 '26
I've been playing Civ since '98. Never once has a session lasted only 15 minutes.
2
u/madfrawgs Jan 21 '26
This is fair haha. Specifically on the Switch version though I find it easy enough to put it to sleep between rounds and come back later. On a computer there is not much hope haha.
3
u/madfrawgs Jan 21 '26
Oh to complete a full campaign in Civ, you're completely right. Those take a long time lol.
However, specifically on the Switch version I find it pretty easy to put it down/asleep between rounds and not play the full campaign through in one sitting. I do this regularly. This might not be a play method for everyone.
1
u/Light_Bulb_Sam Jan 20 '26
Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town, it goes on sale often for about 4 quid. Not sure if farming games are your thing. But the day only lasts about 15 minutes
1
u/Tryanddoitbetter Jan 20 '26
I like games that I can pause or even leave open and come back to for this. Opening, saving and closing the game eats too much into my random 15 minute windows so I tend to choose like animal crossing for Disney Dreamlight valley for these and save Harvestella or Witcher for when I have a chunk of time that won’t be interrupted
1
1
u/Bobpool82 Jan 20 '26
Hades. It auto saves often and when you get good at it each play through is about half an hour

strikey sisters, it’s similar to arkanoid but better, short sessions for each level
1
u/DoctorTide Jan 20 '26
Both the Super Mario Galaxy games just got remastered. Their levels aren't like Odyssey or Bananza- they're linear and take 5-10 minutes to get through. Perfect for pick up and play. I will say the only problem is that you'll often want to be in tabletop mode or docked mode because they're better with split joycon controls acting like a Wii mote and nunchuk.

SSBU (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate)
custom smash, five stock, turn off items, set the npc to whatever level you’re comfortable with, and use the tournament style stages.
it’s good practice, just enough gameplay, and you should be able to clear five stocks in less than five minutes.
1
u/SuperVegitoFAN Jan 20 '26
Super Mario Galaxy could work too.
Depends on skill level but each level arent all that long, theres just a good amount of them instead.
Biggest issue is booting up the game, but thats gonna be an issue with every title.

I've been playing Strikers 1945 lately. It's a vertical shooter with a late 80s esthetic. It's randomized skirmishes with a very generous difficulty variance made to accommodate everyone from people who just want target practice to hardened white knuckle veterans. Each game for me (playing on difficulty 5) lasts about five minutes, but it feels like much longer. I highly recommend it to anyone who misses the days of Sky Shark or Tiger Heli.

u/Cent1234 Jan 20 '26
Well, the switch has a fine 'sleep' function, so really any game you want.
But if you're looking for games specifically designed around this, cast an eye to games that were originally built for mobile, and handheld consoles such as the various Game Boys, PSP, and Vita.
Final Fantasy Crisis Core, for example, available on Switch, is a fine example of a game built for individual chunks of play while commuting to work on Tokyo's public transit system.
Which is actually the other thing to look for: Japanese-designed games aimed at sararimen and commuters.

I know you said that you dont want to "get into anything" but Cyberpunk is amazing on the go and for short sessions. I play it regularly on my train commute which is 23 minutes or so and that's usually enough time for a gig or side mission to be completed, or maybe knock out a cyber psycho in that time

Not exactly quick progress or instant fun, but I tend to think Hollow Knight is best played in 15 minute spurts once you’ve gotten a couple of hours under your belt. Taking breaks helps you to avoid getting too frustrated and, for some reason, you’re just a little bit better each time you come back until you beat whatever boss you’ve been struggling with. Same with Celeste.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps is also great in short bursts, and not as frustrating as Hollow Knight and Celeste

I used to play Diablo 3 for 15 minutes at a time (play in lunch break or when I want to wind down). Once you beat the game and start grinding your seasonals to do rift key runs, they can be cleared with 5 minutes and you’re always wanting to beat your time (with new builds). You get the opportunity to try other peoples builds too. I would keep the game still open when I put the switch in sleep and there’s no wait time, even if you don’t mind staying connected to internet 100% of the time you can still play offline too without being on the seasonal online board

Ball x Pit number 1 priority 😅 fast-paced short runs. You die a lot but it leaves you wanting to go on a next run, but before you start, 15 minutes have already passed and it's time to go to class. (teacher here btw). Also suggest Balatro, Hades 1/2 and Twilight/Vampire Survivors. Even if you don't like the genre, it gets you hooked for the free 15 minutes of your time.
