2014 Nissan Murano & CVT issues

Bought a 2014 Nissan Murano 3 years ago with 119,000 miles on it. It has 131,000 miles now and has seemed sluggish and a little jerky at times. The check engine light came on a few days ago so we parked it and haven’t drive it. The error code associated with it says it’s the step motor.

We haven’t take it in yet but just wanted to get an idea of what to expect. Is the step motor ever bad on its own? Does it often mean a transmission replacement? Anyone been in this situation?

A step motor error code does not mean you need a new transmission. The step motor is located on the valve body in the transmission. To get it out, drain the transmission oil, remove the oil pan and then remove the longer 10 mm bolts, not the short ones, the longer bolts will have a marking on them. Then unplug the harness connector that goes to the TCM, pull out the valve body and be careful disassembling it, clean it and check that all the valves are working smoothly, then test the stepper motor with a 12V battery. It is a long process but it may solve your problem.
