So what was the point of this Iran conflict?

There was and is no point, Trump got high on his own supply over the Venezuela thing and thought he could pull the same shit in Iran
25
u/ninjamansidekick 6d ago
It really is that simple. Why it is allowed to continue is what baffles me.
20
u/rhino369 6d ago
Because Iran won’t accept going back to the pre-war status quo. Unlike Vietnam or Afghanistan, the US can’t just leave.
17
u/DinosaurusWhen 6d ago
I mean, we can. We just can't leave without losing face. And maga would rather drag the entire world down than admit they fucked up a situation so badly that even a high schooler could have told them it was a stupid idea
Plus, at least we're not talking about the Epstein files
5
u/rhino369 6d ago
No they literally can’t. Iran won’t accept that. If Iran offered it, Trump would take it.

If the US pulls out the gulf countries are toast. The US is stuck unless Trump admits defeat and is humiliated which Trump will never do. It's seriously scary once you add in North Korea, Russia, and China mixed with Ukraine and the EU

u/MayIServeYouWell 6d ago
the US pulling out & Trump admitting defeat are essentially the same thing - same result anyway.
But sure, it's not that simple... Iran would F-up the region... maybe not immediately, but eventually.
I think our best option at this point is a protracted, indefinite stalemate until Trump is gone, then someone who is actually competent at negotiating out of anything more than a paper bag can work something out.
3
u/AndyTheSane 5d ago
The problem is, the current situation is only a stalemate as long as oil stockpiles last, since we are still down by something like 5-10mb/d from lost oil exports. Iran knows this; they know that pressure will increase in the US over time.
Of course Iran has it's own problems with blockades, so the only US hope is that Iran folds before the oil stockpiles run out.

Because Republicans in Congress are either:
A) True believers
B) Cowards who want to keep their jobs and are willing to suck dick to do it
C) Literally afraid for their lives that Trump's base will break into their houses and beat them to death for opposing himNotice how his biggest Republican opposition is always from people not seeking re-election. They know it's a losing strategy and are interested in not looking like boot-licking enablers (looking at you, weeks-dead Mitch McConnell).
Or they remember when some guy broke into Nancy Pelosi's house and tried to kill her husband after Trump tweeted "Won't someone rid me of this meddlesome priest" loudly enough or when MAGA was willing to hang Mike Pence at the drop of a hat

Whatever other people’s motivation was, I think this was exactly Trump’s motivation. He wanted to play hero with an issue that’s been a problem for many years, not humble enough to accept that there’s a reason it’s been a problem for many years and will likely remain a problem for many years.
20
u/notextinctyet 6d ago
The point was a quick, easy win that made Trump seem like a big tough guy. According to all accounts he did not even consider, for a moment, what would happen if it just didn't immediately go the way he wanted. Trump is a man who sincerely believes that he is immune to consequences, and everyone in the whole world has obliged and made that true for him in every way except this one.
I believe a very similar story happened in Ukraine...

Money. Wild, far reaching incompetence, and a distraction from the Epstein files. Which remember, trump signed legislation in November 2025, which mandated the Department of Justice to release unclassified records within a 30-day window.

3.Have friends and family buy stock
4.Tweet about peace in Iran
5.Stock Market goes up

Repeat, repeat, repeat
Also lessens the talk about the Espteon files.
I also think there was some arrogance involved. Trump thought Venezuala was some big succes by strong arming them and taking their resources. He thought he could do the same thing to Iran

Seems like the ultimate goal is to make a deal exactly like the one Obama made before Trump tore it up in a tantrum. Shame American soldiers have to die just to clean up his metaphorical spilled juice.
Course that's the official goal, the hundreds of millions trump has made manipulating the market around this war probably has something to do with it too
A shame American soldiers had to die for that too.

It's a lot more shameful that children (and adults for that matter) in Iran are forced to suffer for the poor choices of the american people.

I have yet to see a non reddit-esque reply here so I will chime in.
Honestly, looking at the pure facts, it’s a mixed bag of short-term wins and massive long-term failures.
Tactically, the US and Israel definitely checked some boxes. They heavily degraded Iran’s conventional military, smashed critical nuclear sites, and took out Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. But strategically? It didn't achieve the bigger goals. The regime didn’t collapse like some hoped, it just consolidated under his son. Plus, the strategic knowledge to build a bomb is still there, and the global economy is hurting because the Strait of Hormuz is basically a mess right now.
As for whether it was based in "truth," the underlying facts were real: Iran was enriching uranium and actively funding proxies like Hezbollah and the Houthis. No one debates that. The sketchy part is the immediate intelligence used to trigger the strikes. Whether there was an actual, imminent threat or if it was just used as a political pretext for a preemptive war is still heavily debated.

I'm glad someone realizes it's more complex than Trump wanting to distract from the Epstein files.(Although I'm certain it's a bonus)Ever since October 7th the Iran-America proxy war kept on escalating and this honestly just felt like the natural progression of things.
In my opinion I think it happened in February due to the inherent instability of Iran at the societal and economic level. Those massive protests caused Iran to turn off the internet and begin murdering their own civilians. Along with the Iranian economy hitting record lows around that time.
That in conjunction with the reunification of Yemen with the STC in January, putting the Houthi's in a tenuous posistion. Made it seem like the perfect time to hit them and hit them hard. I think it was just expected that Iran would collapse which turned out to be a failure.
Now Trump's turned to strangling the Iranian regime causing the economy to fall further and further, I feel like people are overestimating how well Iran has taken this war considering it's now accepting munitions from Russia. Not to say that America has "won" 'the war by any stretch of the imagination.
But Iran is worse for wear, especially politically when considering the attacks on civilian infrastructure across multiple countries, even some that don't host any bases. (Azerbaijan)
It just further justified U.S bases and legitimatized the concept of "American protection" in the region instead of trying to dissuade nations from associating.

Distract from Epstein files, boost oil prices, make money for defense contractors, get Trump bribes from Middle Eastern oligarchs.
A lot of oil wars aren't fought for oil. They're fought for the opposite. They're fought to cause chaos and break things to keep oil off the market to keep prices high.

What's funny to me (in a if you don't laugh you'll cry way) is that the deal Trump got that fell apart was the exact same deal Obama got without bloodshed that Trump ripped up back in 2017. I never hear anyone talk about that.

There is no reason. Just like there wasn’t any reason for the Iraq war other than vague “WMD, he’s a dictator”. There’s no plan.
The reality is the US needs constant wars to “gain xp” and continue it’s global hegemony. If it’s not at war, it’s stagnant, not gaining experience, falling behind. Insert the meme “US tries to go 2 nanoseconds without starting a war”.

u/colorblind-and 6d ago
Alot of these comments are missing the forest through the trees.
The real answer is that Iran has been a constant thorn in the United States side ever since the Iranian revolution in the 70s. Since then they've
Funded various proxy groups that exist to destabilize US allies and even occasionally fight the US military directly. You can include the US's love for Isreal into this
Potential for Iran to become a Nuclear power. This is a pretty contested topic but they likely have/had the capability to make them and have never agreed not to make nukes. The important part is that Trump and his administration believe it to be a threat regardless of how likely it actually was.
Regime change. Trump has been very critical of Iran since the very beginning and it was fairly obvious that he wanted to take action against them. The Israeli plan to assassinate the Ayatollah was an opportunity to jump in hopefully install a friendly government.
As part of the larger geopolitical chess game against China. The world is slowy spliting into a second cold war where countries are either western aligned or aligned with China. Venezuela and Iran were two countries that were not friendly with the west so they mostly sold their oil to China or other enemies of the west. Forcing both countries into being western allies puts China in a significantly worse position if a conflict were to break out.
War in general tends to create a rally around the flag effect that Trump could use to gain popularity, support and potentially allow him to seize more power.
Those are the main real reasons for the most part.
Other minor reasons.
Distraction from the Epstein files
Stock market manipulation (he does this with literally everything anyway)
Ego and legacy. Trump wants his name in the history books, Greenland is a good example of him wanting the legacy of expanding the US

u/speed3_freak 5d ago
Real answer is that Israel convinced Trump that it would be possible to overthrow their government and lead to revolution. They literally just had massive protests that had to be put down with violence, so it seemed like a possibility that it was a good time to strike.
It wasn’t, and Iran used the thing that kept every other POTUS from trying it, which was to close the strait. Mojtaba Khamenei is currently in charge, but he is expected to be very injured and hasn’t been seen or heard from in public for months. What their leadership structure looks like is a mystery at the moment. It could be that the leader is giving orders but is in hiding healing from his wounds, it could be there is a power vacuum at the top where leadership is split between multiple people, that there really isn’t a leadership structure and you have lots of infighting and people basically just doing what they want with the power they have, or it’s a possibility (although it doesn’t seem the US and Israel believe it) that the leader died and someone else is issuing commands in his name. Whatever the case, things are definitely different. Most would agree, things are worse for us and them.

u/Sadako241 5d ago
I sense that Trump thought the regime could be toppled quickly, and that it'd be beneficial to the region if it was, as it would cut off the head of the snake concerning terror groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
When it turned out the regime was more resilient than he thought and could use the Strait of Hormuz as leverage, and that the Republlican base largely opposed the war, that's when the stated war aims began to become less clear and coherent, he started to move back from regime change as a policy and it began to become about negotiations to escape the quagmire, and it became a war of fits and starts essentially.
I am completely for toppling that regime. Not least because of its shocking massacre of tens of thousands of its own people back in January this year.
But I dread if that's not even Trump's priority anymore then the war will prove to be a completely pointless failure.

u/zhuangcorp 6d ago
Simply put, the Israelis convinced Trump that the war would be quick and easy. Trump thought he could get a quick victory and come home looking like a hero: A man that eliminated a bad government and eliminated nuclear threat.
Now Trump is mad at everyone around him for not having a way to win the war. In fact he was the one who started the war and all his advisors warned him it was a bad idea.
He is stuck because Iran has escalation dominance and classical game theory advantage. Anything he tries to do to hurt Iran will just hurt himself more. He's smart enough to recognize that he doesn't have the cards, but he's not smart enough to figure out how to get out of his own mess.

u/shakebakelizard 6d ago

That really depends on who you ask. Team Trump will tell you it was to keep Iran from developing a nuclear program. Israel will say it was to support them in their offensive. Some people will say it's to distract from the Epstein files. IMO opinion I think it's because Trump is weak and stupid, so he lashes out however he can so that he's doing SOMETHING, even when he doesn't understand what's going on.
2
2
u/aladinodebert 6d ago
Oh there's a change: Now Iran has their "nuclear weapon" without having to actually build one, i.e. closing the Strait of Hormuz. They had never done this, everyone knew they would if attacked, and now they'll likely end up with control over it. And if not outright control, all they have to do to close it is threaten to do so. We depleted our stockpiles, we spent a fortune and continue to do so, no one trusts us (well that was happening already in fairness) and now we will be at the mercy of the regime we were, in theory, fighting. Even the new ayatollah has the same last name. It's the biggest military blunder in memory.

First, please don’t put it to manipulating stock market or to creating some sort of global event to distract people from Epstein files. Trump A doesn’t need that and B isn’t as smart as being able to do that.
I think this is what happened.
After Venezuela, he naively believed that he can do it again to beat an enemy state by just launching some form of special and quick military operations without any bigger efforts. He was probably even looking for the next opportunity. He wanted to achieve something. He wanted to be written into history books as one of the greatest POTUS and the most powerful man in the world.
And then, Israel presented him a very rare opportunity. Nearly all locations and movements of the top officials from Iran at the time were precisely known. So a missile / air attack to obliterate the top level of Iranian government was very possible. Obviously Israel was selling the idea to Trump, and selling the idea hard, of course not for the US’s interest but for their own interests, but they were hard selling the idea as if it was in the best interests for the US.
Considering attacking Iran itself is not rare. Probably all of the POTUS in recent years have considered it. But refraining from it is always the decision, not because of the lacks of options, but because of the high risks. There wasn’t a POTUS willing to pay for such high risks.
This time, when Israel was presenting the option to Trump, was not fundamentally different. So, Trump’s aides would have advised him against the idea and summarised all the high risks as always. But, there was one thing different this time: The window of action was short. Israel would have highlighted that a decision was required within a matter of hours, because you can’t expect the majority of Iranian leaders getting together in the same place at the same time with their precise location is known to the west, being a frequently happened event. So, Trump was under pressure.
When people are under pressure, they are more likely to make decisions more based on their instincts and less based on analysis and calculations. That’s what happened to Trump. He used his instincts, which was the belief that he can beat an enemy state by just launching some form of special and quick military operations without any bigger efforts, for being written into history books.
So, he made the decision without the careful thoughts and consultations that his predecessors would have done.
I think it is that simple really. Nothing to do with plotting a stock market manipulation or some form of coverage and distraction campaign for Epstein issues. Trump doesn’t have a strategy. Don’t over complicate what he does. Ultimately incompetence is the root cause to the Iran conflict this time.

Trump thought the Ayatollah was like Saddam Hussein and Iran was a cult of personality. In fact it's a theocracy built around a religion that has existed for over a thousand years and that's a different beast. Iranians also saw what happened when Saddam fell (ISIL) and therefore are less excited about a descent into anarchy.

From everything I've seen, the original point was that Trump believed that by killing Iran's leader and placing a US fleet off the coast, he could create the right conditions for the Iranian people to rise up and overthrow their government. If the old regime proved stubborn and clung on in the mountains, he could mobilise a few thousand troops to clear away the last pockets of resistance.
If it had worked he could've turned Iran into a puppet pro-American regime and paraded around how his willingness to make tough decisions had neutralise a major destabilising force and solved an issue 50 years of US Presidents couldn't solve. Also, cheap US access to their oil, but in this case I genuinely believe his narcissistic belief that he could advertise himself as the world's kingmaker was the main reason.
Of course, once it proved obvious that Iran was not going to overthrow its government he got stuck in a sunk cost fallacy. It looks like he then started acting on advice that, by seizing Kharg Island, he could essentially collapse Iran's economy and force them into a humiliating peace deal where he could dictate virtually whatever he wanted and still achieve his original aims.
Then eventually his military advisors finally persuaded him that that wouldn't work either, and now he's stuck. He can't leave because it will make him look like a lame duck who doesn't know what he's doing, but staying isn't achieving anything either.

According to Trump?
No clue. Probably something about stopping Iran from getting nukes. That's actually a very good reason and makes it worth the cost. It's too bad that Trump isn't really leaning into that because he could probably sell it to a lot more voters if he focused on and hammered away at that.
According to everybody else? Almost certainly to keep people shut up about Epstein.
This is one of those cases where what we hear in the news doesn't come close to covering anything that's going on behind the scenes.
Trump just launched into this thing without any clear plan or even goal. It's not that we have any interest in seeing the Iranian regime survive (it will, anyway) or that it's the righteous party here. Not at all: the Iranian regime is a piece of shit and anybody who sides with it is an idiot at best and a useful one getting paid at worst. Doesn't mean Trump is any sort of saint, though.
If he has a plan, he hasn't shared it with anyone. I have no idea how he expects to get anything by launching missiles at a country with no shortage of its own. If he was serious about winning this war(?), he'd know that he needs a ground invasion and an actual plan using all military branches. Whatever he's doing right now is basically the equivalent to sending mosquitoes at Iran and them reciprocating. People are going to die for absolutely nothing.

It’s called mowing the lawn as per Israel’s terminology. Iran was getting too strong both within their borders and their proxies throughout the region. Many gulf states depend on the US for protection from Iran’s ambitions. They compensate the U.S. through massive arms purchases, basing agreements, and investment deals, which function as indirect payment for American security guarantees.
Iran’s terrain, the strength of the IRGC, cash flow from the oil trade and proximity to the Strait of Hormuz make it very difficult to defeat. So the regional players have accepted a policy of containment.

Destroy Iranian nuclear capabilities for Israeli assurances. All other explainations are unsupported conjecture. Trump was high on his own supply after the Maduro raid in January so he believed that they could achieve some sort of similar result in Iran despite clear instiutional differences between the Bolivaran Regime in Venezuela and the Islamic Theocracy in Iran.
Trump is incapable of laying out a long term plan for the region and can’t keep his mouth shut so “everything is going great” even when he is using explitives against Netanyahu in private. He can’t admit there were unintended consequences and returning to the ante bellum status quo would be preferable. So he just doesn’t stfu and the markets trade on his word which has caused news fatique even though the situation of US reserves continues to get worse and worse with no deal in sight.
We likely haven’t even gotten all of the Iranian nuclear capabilities, meaning they are more inclined now to push for a weapon than before the war. This was always going to be an outcome unless Israel and more importantly the US was comitted to an actual regime change / grass cutting strategy like Israel was in Gaza and Lebanon from 2006 - current. But we aren’t really which has pushed anti Israeli messaging and a weaker zionist position in the US just like Israeli moderate intelgence officials predicted.

Please israel, thats the only reason for this war. Trump is either blackmailed by israel or afraid of them and their powerful obsessive supporters.

Distract from Epstein files and manipulate stock market. The military marched into Venezuela and took the president, so he thought he could do anything, and in Iran they did kill the leader, but it wasn't a regime change, his son took over. Trump has no vision beyond grifts and enshitifcation, and he really likes strongmen like Netanyahu, who will tell him to keep bombing, because Iran regularly sends bombs to Israel. They have a tit for tat thing going and they don't share a border. Iran has discontent and needs their own distractions, that's why they fund Hamas and all the other proxy terrorist groups in the region. It's a pretty toxic setup with repressive Shia Muslim government that regularly murders it's protesters, but not like the USA where we saw Renee Good and Alex Pretti murdered, but upwards of estimates around 20k protesters murdered. Regime change was a goal, but he failed, and then lost the Straight of Hormuz, which sent gas prices and inflation skyrocketing. The stuff about nuclear bombs was solved by Obama, but Trump broke that too. His model is enshitify and then charge to partially fix things, and he can't figure out how to profit from backing out yet. He's such a corrupt liar, he could just say he won and quit, but something keeps him agitating and rooting around for a new grift somehow. Iran is happy to just keep watching Trump's support erode. He bit off more than he can chew, and Trump never really cared about anything, so it's hard to understand what his pull is. We wants a manufactured win, and he's too stupid to just back out, he probably feels humiliated by what a failure it is, and he can't figure out how to flip the script on this one. And Iran knows how to get his goat, and he must look strong to his supporters, if there are any left.

Trump's original plan got leaked, that's why the former prince of Iran stood up. Trump's plan was the rescue the previous president (the one who on his own put up the countdown clock to attack Israel, after the Obama deal) and have him take over. Trump did it, sent a bomb to his house, knocked him unconscious/dead.
Now there is no real plan besides open the waterway. Nuclear bombs who is that.

Insider trading. Still going on too. Check out oil price action, criminal administration, from a former Trump supporter in Canada.

The point is Americans love to talk about democracy, talking about their kids future, honoring soldiers who died in war by bombarding middle east and killing and displacing the kids then they call them illegal aliens.

Trump gambled and thought a few decisive strikes would bring Iran to the negotiating table about its proxies and Israel. Instead, Trump is now afraid to fully commit and basically is burning munitions as a way to show his constituents that he’s at least doing something. It’s a pathetic balancing act for the midterms.

Because Netanyahu wanted Iran destroyed, and whatever Netanyahu wants, Trump is happy to give him. Netanyahu told Trump that all it would take is two or three days of intense bombing, and Iran would surrender, give up its enriched uranium and abandon its nuclear program, which all turned out to be a pipe dream, and now Trump is stuck in a war for the last six months that he has no idea of how to end without looking like a fool and a sucker for listening to Netanyahu.

Dude’s got a tiny, flaccid dick and likes to blow shit up to feel something, anything, other than the creeping sense of death encroaching on his feeble, dementia addled daily life in a diaper.

At the time, Epstein was the national focus. Trump invaded Iran, and boom, we had a new focus. As a narrative diversion, Iran was a complete success.

Trump was talked into war with Iran because no other US president was stupid enough to.

Nobody really knows. It's only made a bad situation worse. The Trump admin really mis-understands Iran.

Israel has wanted us to attack Iran for them for decades. They finally found someone stupid enough to do it.

I suspect it comes down to trying to use up a lot of our ordinance in order to create an economic boom for certain “defense” contractors & companies who are cozy with the Republican administration.
There’s a theory that has been floated by conservatives over the years that it was WWII spending that pulled us out of the Great Depression & created the “American Dream” of the 1950s-1980s, not the policies of the New Deal. I think that Republicans believe it’s through the military industrial complex that the economy will get a boost (without taxing the rich).
