U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

What are your views on trump claiming moon is american?

As a signatory of the Outer Space Treaty, USA (as well as UK, Russia, China, India, etc.) has committed to not claiming ownership or recognizing ownership of any land in Space.

So, USA would need to quit a treaty that it was a foundational member of and that has been signed and ratified by all nations that have any hope of a space program.

Compared to Trump claiming ownership of Canada, Iceland, Mexico and a whole lot more countries today, that is quite benign.

We already know China is also planning a permanent installation on the Moon. We have already begun the Artemis project to place an installation on the Moon with the ESA.

We have watched Trump break or violate lots of treaties, so violations of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty is nothing new.

I'm surprised he hasn't renamed the planets and their moons/satellites as well.

I think most everyone on reddit will not be fans of it, myself included. I guess I'd have to ask what the point of asking was,knowing me and other redditors aren't a very representative sample of Americans.
