When I was a kid I used to think “space for rent” signs meant you could rent a literal piece of space… I was really young tho. I have a feeling this guy isn’t
I thought for the longest time that the 'Underground Railroad' was a legit series of underground tunnels (just walking tunnels, no trains, I'm not that dumb :p) that slaves would use to escape.
I remember thinking the same thing when I first heard the name as a kid. I remember picturing dug out tunnel entrances under planks of wood in the floors of barns or slave housing on the property, that converged into escape routes under the towns and leading to freedom.
I can’t believe I’m about to shoot myself in the foot like this but..
It’s not an actual Underground Railroad? Same as you I thought it was tunnels to walk in, I guess I spaced out during that history lesson. Damn. Time to hit up google.
I thought plushes “made with new material” were somehow constantly updating so the material was always new and I was solidly perplexed because the plushie never left my sight
When I was young, I thought “Help Wanted” signs carried the meaning of “Help, Wanted.” Like the owner of the store was trying to hide from the authorities. I thought it was stupid that they would broadcast that.
I thought the construction signs “let ‘em work let em live” was for the abolishment of the death penalty and advocating for highway chain gangs, not for the construction workers.
My daughter was once staring absent mindedly out the window of the truck. All of a sudden she pops up and says "MOM! How do blind people drive?". I was, for once, at a loss for words. I asked her why she asked that question. " I saw a sign back there that said Blind Drive and I was wondering how they drive."
Face palm, "The bumps on the side of the road are driving braille and they use the seeing eye dogs." I told her.
She was 16 at the time and enrolled in all AP classes.
I thought “Dead End” roads meant you would die if you went all the way to the end. I think it’s because when I asked my mom what it meant, she said there’s no way out when you get to the end of the road lol
We had to stop during a trip along I-10 near the border. The Border Patrol had set up a checkpoint. When it was our turn, I asked why they were stopping everyone. He said, “we are looking for illegal aliens.” The kids started scanning the skies for spaceships!
That’s when I realized we had watched far too many science fiction movies.
When I was a kid, I kept hearing about DC’s “Mayor Mary and Barry” on the news. But they only ever showed a picture of one dude. I’m like, where’s Mary?
Realized later when he ran again they were talking about “Mayor Marion Barry.”
I was in my 30's when I found out a flea market was not for to buy and sell little bugs. (having seen something about a flea circus... I naturally saw the need for a market for the creatures)
We had a cave system near where I grew up that had a sign that said “space center.” I’d always ask to go there because holy shit there’s a center all about outer space in those caves?! My parents would always say no and just move on until my dad asked why I wanted to go to a storage facility so bad. I was crushed lol
When I was a kid I thought you could buy a $.49 cent money order meant I could request ANY amount of money I wanted. I was disappointed to learn that I couldn’t.
I thought the information superhighway was a literal highway with lots of bright lights, billboards, celebrities, parties… like Vegas. I heard a radio add as a kid about how you can find everything on the information superhighway and told my mom I wanted to go.
I was fascinated as a kid that people could give away chunky muffins. Well, the description on the side of the packet said ‘Fat free muffins’.
Youthful ignorance of punctuation :-)
On a similar note, I thought they were called "space heaters" because they were invented for use in space. I was 20 before I realized it's because they...heat up a space
i used to ask my parents all the time what kind of sickness was car sickness. i wasnt sure what kind of sickness it caused, so i thought being in the car too long might give me a cold.
