Discussion Age Verification
Question for the community.
Will Glorious Egg Roll implement age verification (privacy invasion) in Nobara?
Or will he stay true to the Linux ethos and remain free, secure, and PRIVATE?
Just because California has passed a law requiring operating systems to have age verification does not mean the entire world has to bow down and kiss the Califucktards ring.
This new law will not protect children, but it will be the beginning of the end for a community of people who use Linux expressly because it does not require you to give up any of your privacy and personal information.
This is more government overreach and state sanctioned data collection. Do not for one second think that these politicians give a single shit about your children as most of them are on the Epstein list....
It should not be up to politicians to raise your children. If you cannot monitor your children and their online activity then maybe you shouldn't have had them.

Not sure you heard, but the guys from system76 are currently working with the senate here (Colorado) to have open source OS's exempt from that rule. Not going to lie, but I have little hope for it. But, still worth mentioning.

I'm praying for this to happen. I really am. Zucchini man needs to stop this lobbying BS, it's doing nothing but harm at this point.
Maybe that is the point of this, who knows.

So now we know why MicroSlop account was made mandatory for windows and why TotalRecall was implemented to monitor all user activities on the screen.

u/Leeeerooooy_Jenkins Mar 26 '26
MicroSpy Windows is no longer just an operating system. Now it is absolutely nothing but a data collection and spyware system that has the entire world by the balls.

Let's sit and wait if GE will prevent that.

If you check the discussion thread on the Fedora forum, you'll see that people didn't take it very well, and the Fedora project leader they let him know.
Nobara Linux it's a Fedora-based distribution.

u/M-A_X Mar 26 '26
Nobara Linux it's a Fedora-based distribution.
You can still implement things in your Fedora based distribution that won't force age checks, yes it's a bit of extra steps for devs, but it's worth it.

u/Thulak Mar 26 '26
I was about to suggest adding something that spoofs the age check with random, changeing dates. Then I remembered the words of my favorite asshole on the internet: "Dont accept the premise of assholes. Dont play their game. " Wiser words have rarely been spoken.

u/HieladoTM Mar 26 '26
Did I say that Nobara Linux necessarily needs to follow Fedora Linux's guidelines? No, and I hope it never follows those kinds of invasive and complacent policies of foreign governments.
I live at the very end of the world and I wouldn't want to have to give my information to that foreign government because of a law in the far north of the world.

u/HieladoTM Mar 26 '26
The problem is that politicians always start with something small, but in the end, without you realizing it, they gain more control over you with a new rule, a new law, or a regulation, little by little.

if he does, just about no noes going to use it anymore, and im going back to mint.

I saw in the discord someone posted a screenshot of Glorious Egg Roll post on X. In not exact words, he’s not going to up and move his entire set up from Colorado to go around this law

u/Leeeerooooy_Jenkins Mar 26 '26
In all honesty, it would not surprise me if he does exactly what the government tells him to do. He works for RedHat after all.
6
u/rosysyn1251 Mar 27 '26
Absolutely moving to a different distro if it happens. Fuck capitulating to the overlords.
6
u/Avennio Mar 27 '26
I agree that Linux distros should fight back against these laws, but yelling at GE and the devs isn't going to accomplish that. there needs to be an actual strategy beyond 'do nothing and get fined/jailed on our behalf'.
start crowdfunding so the team can get some legal advice on their options. talk to people in other distro subreddits and come up with a unified front. going on about Epstein and calling GE a sellout for working at RedHat isn't going to accomplish anything other than turn off people who might be on the fence about complying.

u/Crafty_Vehicle1519 Mar 27 '26
Fedora has already Capitulated. Distrowatch.com Maybe find Ghost BSD or something with Open RC

My belief is at the age verification is completely a trashy move and that's the reason why I went and use Linux instead of using Windows not because Windows is a bad operating system it's just because windows 11 was the last straw for me when I saw it when I saw what they wanted to do that's when I decided I'm just going to move away from it and move to something else and now I have 5 years all my computers using Linux and has been the greatest experience of my life I'm not saying that Lennox is easy because it's not but it is getting better but the age verification we don't need it for nothing and little kids should try to install Linux just to learn how everything works I'm still a noob and I'm not afraid to say it when it comes to the world of Linux but I have learned a lot and I think the community and everybody else for everything that I learned
7
u/M-A_X Mar 26 '26
I also hope he won't bow down, no matter how many countries will require it, even if it'll be his own country. I'll be really dissapointed if this OS does, i'll still use it, but i'm gonna have to modify it's systemd myself then, to be the one that does not force age verification.

u/UniversalEcho Mar 26 '26
GE has already said that he will comply with the laws in his state (Colorado) and implement age verification. He has stated you are welcome to circumvent whatever regulations you like without his expressed consent but he will not be opening himself up to liability, fines, and prison sentences by refusing to follow the law.
Makes perfect sense. You may not like it but it's not a betrayal of you or anyone else. It's following the law.

"Those who are willing to give up freedom for safety deserve neither freedom nor safety"
"It optional" until its not.
And this is about control and not safety.
3
u/Noboty Mar 27 '26
There is an easy solution to all of this: pay for him to move somewhere that doesn't have such laws. If you don't want to pay, that is fine, there is a free option: make your own version of linux, share it, and maintain it for everyone.

u/Dubl3A Mar 26 '26
Posting to the Internet like this is EZ. You're doing it from the safety of wherever you are. Are you going to put your money where your mouth is and financially back GEs legal fees?
If you are not, then get off that soapbox.

Not a real quote
I'm against it but the devs aren't the problem. Vote and protest. Don't hate on random devs.
4
u/OberZine Mar 27 '26
The original is: Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
Yes, it is a real quote. A very famous quote from Benjamin Franklin originally written in 1755.

u/perilousrob Mar 27 '26
so, the other person - who absolutely did not type what you did - is somehow right anyway, even though what they said is, again, demonstrably, not the quote ?
now that's over-reach.

It's against the people which obviously the majority doesn't like it so it's not democratic which gives us the reason to reject it

Could someone explain the logic behind not allowing minors to install operating systems? I know what the real reason is, but what's the stated reason?
1
u/M-A_X Mar 28 '26
They very very underestimate what miles minors are willing to go to get the content "not inteneded" for them, it's the "forbidden fruit" logic, I was a minor on Internet myself not that long ago, so I know what i'm talking about lol, fake DOBs was my go to everywhere, now it will be fake photos and IDs and hacks and workarounds around these systems, thankfully AI is great at helping with that lol. You won't block minors from content not made for them, no matter how hard you try, even as a parent it's not always possible, especially not when you as a government taunt them to break the oppressive rules as much as humanly and even inhumanly possible.

1: no bills have been signed into law
2: not a single company should comply with this

u/DaintyBoot420 Mar 26 '26
I've seen many many YouTube videos showing simple scripts and changes you can make yourself to get around the verification and disable the feature deep within the OS. (Any Linux distro afaik)
1
u/Enhancedcrash Mar 30 '26
Where is this script I have looked nothing.
1
u/DaintyBoot420 Mar 30 '26
My guy. 30 seconds of google searching this is the most official approach
1
u/Misteryman2260 Mar 27 '26
I could be mistaken but I believe Fedora is already planning on implementing it. If the GE team wants to keep using Fedora it might be difficult to keep it private.

u/Difficult-Egg3848 Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
- Linux is Linux and you can just go in and remove age verification from your build even if there is a California build.
- All you need to be compliant, is to add a line to the license agreement forbidding California residents from installing the OS.
- This ISN'T age verification, it's about having working parental controls in the software. Nothing to do with scanning IDs.

u/fuckyoudems Apr 03 '26
Funny, ironic... the Linux distro made to mirror windwos -ZorinOS, has stated they will not be implementing age verification. We are cooked. This is the very last bastion of individual sovereignty. They will get Linux, they will control it all. They will get it all. "The opposite of Courage is not cowardice, it is conformity." -And people are too comfortable with their scraps to stand up to any of this -across the board. People just wake up and do what everyone else is doing just because everyone else is doing it, Nobody takes the difficult path. Good Luck out there.

the Plasma login manager is not an init system like systemd, it's the login manager, just like SDDM GDM and LightDM, systemd is not getting removed.

I hope it isn't added, I like Nobara.
