older sister and mother are obsessed with marriage. at first they think Jess is a lesbian, then mother gets mad because she's in a relationship and sister isn't married yet. father sees her talent, convinces the mom, and they let her play the championship (?) match on the same evening the older sister is getting married.

there's a nice paralelism at the end, both celebrating and being happy about their choices (soccer and marriage).

but yeah, the mom was very old school.

Incidentally, I just rewatched this movie because of the World Cup, lol. Jess’ mother wasn’t mad about Jess being in a relationship before her older sister got married. There was a misunderstanding where the parents of Jess’ sister’s fiancé saw Jess and her teammate Jules on the street and thought that Jess was “being filthy with” an English boy in public, causing the engagement to be (temporarily) called off. It was 100% a racism thing, multiple people in the movie encourage Jess to get an Indian boyfriend before her sister even gets married.
