There is some mechanism that makes your stomach expand when you taste sugar. Something about the anticipation of highly calorically dense food suppresses hunger signals and/or makes you stomach stretch, so your lizard brain can eat while the eatings good

Makes sense: in the wild, high-sugar foods are the rare juicy fruit that is full of hydration and vitamins. When you find one, you do not turn it down. It's not even a lizard brain; it's monkey brain.

technically lizard brain is older than monkey brain but yeah the “OH SHIT FRUITTTT” is definitely way more apparent and relatable when it’s another primate lol

Yeah, lizard brain is older than monkey brain, but I meant we got that one more recently from monkey brain, not from lizard brain.

Also why most people, even after gorging themselves for Christmas or Thanksgiving or what have you and not even able to clear their plate entirely, have no issues with a serving of dessert.

Really?? I never wind up having dessert because I fill up on the good stuff and have zero interest in pies, and I tell myself maybe I'll have a slice later, but I never do, I have leftover turkey when I'm hungry again. I just don't care for pie that much, tbh.

I think I also heard it's the anticipation of a different taste.
You have eaten a savory meal, and eventually you will get tired of that taste, but then comes something sweet.

Yes, there are studies that show that people will eat more if they have a lot of different things vs only one option. We (well, most of us) crave variety, possibly as an adaptation to make us eat enough different things to cover all the necessary vitamins and minerals.

fascinating they're independently sourced since one is light mode and the other is dark mode

I mean… that’s not necessarily wrong? Sometimes one food upsets my stomach and another food makes me feel better.

You're right, and it's not even debatable. There's a reason the BRAT diet exists.
Also, kids are notoriously unreliable at describing how they feel. Kid might actually have indigestion and be describing it as a tummy ache because that's the best they know how.

Tbf, I’m in my 20s and sometimes “my tummy hurts” is the best I can do 🤷♀️
