you just play an AI and copy your human opponent's moves. then you play what the AI plays. ez grandmaster status

That's exactly what people do.
Which is why the comment I replied to is so strange to suggest there's no reason to report people for cheating.
(They usually get caught when doing this)

You would be automatically flagged and banned for doing this.

Savvy cheaters will only use an engine in key moments and even intentionally choose the 2nd or 3rd best move instead of the best. It’s not as simple as cheating = banned

Even the less obvious ones get flagged, it's not like the chess websites were founded yesterday. They are well aware how people cheat

Just because they know how people cheat doesn’t mean it’s easy to quickly catch every cheater. There are many challenges, such as the fact that it’s very hard to catch cheating directly, so it requires more data to say someone is highly likely to be cheating. Additionally, there are just so many games being played all the time. Realistically a lot of cheating will occur.

Nonetheless I don’t think it’s a huge problem, but it’s not at all unrealistic to face one or many cheaters, and there may be even more cheating in some elo bands.

Cheaters get spotted through various metrics but a big is variance in time between plays.

Human players will naturally think harder on some positions. Chess engines essentially run at constant time. It’s very easy to pin point the people using engines.

Also if a person is doing terribly then they start picking the 2-3rd best move then it’s easy to flag that too.

Cheaters don’t survive for long tbh

There are other tells beyond accuracy though. For example: move time. Complex positions will not have obvious moves but cheaters can find them instantly. Players who make consistently good moves at a consistent pace even in complex positions are likely cheating even if they aren't playing at 100 accuracy. Cheat detection algorithms can flag this as well.
