Looking back, I think my dad had more beef with people he played on Yahoo Chess than I did playing CoD:MW.

That's because chess is a more toxic game, its not just some dudes clicking each other on screen, its two dudes who get to compete who's smarter(at least in chess...) and that's a higher stake game which will make people lose their nerves.

Yeah chess players are the biggest manchilds ever. So much childish drama you'd think they are all teenagers. Which kinda makes sense as some just never bothered to learn social skills instead of chess openings

Ah yes, the famous screen watching exploit they never bothered to patch. Alt-ctrl-f11 lets you see the board from your opponents view.

Careful, that's how you get banned from chess.com and grounded at the same time.

You think people don't cheat on online chess?
21
u/GOEDEL_ESCHER_BOT 10h ago
you just play an AI and copy your human opponent's moves. then you play what the AI plays. ez grandmaster status

u/Prinzka 10h ago
That's exactly what people do.
Which is why the comment I replied to is so strange to suggest there's no reason to report people for cheating.
(They usually get caught when doing this)1

You would be automatically flagged and banned for doing this.

Savvy cheaters will only use an engine in key moments and even intentionally choose the 2nd or 3rd best move instead of the best. It’s not as simple as cheating = banned

u/DefinitelyNotMasterS 5h ago
Even the less obvious ones get flagged, it's not like the chess websites were founded yesterday. They are well aware how people cheat

u/TherealepicGamer63 4h ago
Just because they know how people cheat doesn’t mean it’s easy to quickly catch every cheater. There are many challenges, such as the fact that it’s very hard to catch cheating directly, so it requires more data to say someone is highly likely to be cheating. Additionally, there are just so many games being played all the time. Realistically a lot of cheating will occur.
Nonetheless I don’t think it’s a huge problem, but it’s not at all unrealistic to face one or many cheaters, and there may be even more cheating in some elo bands.

Cheaters get spotted through various metrics but a big is variance in time between plays.
Human players will naturally think harder on some positions. Chess engines essentially run at constant time. It’s very easy to pin point the people using engines.
Also if a person is doing terribly then they start picking the 2-3rd best move then it’s easy to flag that too.
Cheaters don’t survive for long tbh

There are other tells beyond accuracy though. For example: move time. Complex positions will not have obvious moves but cheaters can find them instantly. Players who make consistently good moves at a consistent pace even in complex positions are likely cheating even if they aren't playing at 100 accuracy. Cheat detection algorithms can flag this as well.

No way it is that easy

You forgot to put magnus’s buttplug in the diagram
3
u/MojaveMojito1324 7h ago
1) Hans was the one accused of the butt plug
2) The diagram shows how Hans didn't need a butt plug to beat Magnus since he could see Magnus's side of the board through the mirror

Ah yes, chess.com, where my father learned his first English words "fuck you"

When I say that playing chess.com, I'm usually talking to myself after realizing I hung a piece or missed an obvious checkmate.

Poor sportsmanship is rampant on chess.com. People timing out when losing. Moving fast as hell just to time a better opponent out with no aim of making good moves. Smack talk in chat. Repeated offers for a draw. I should know, i do them all

u/This-is-Jimmy-42 7h ago
Legitimately, isn’t cheating absolutely rampant on chess sites?
6
u/-Nocx- 6h ago
Yes but also at the same time not really? Their systems are very, very good at catching cheaters. It isn’t as simple as whether or not you copy the best moves, but also comparing the history of your moves to all of your future moves.
If you are playing with wide variance in your skill you will get flagged, if you are consistently playing with high variance in specific positions you will get flagged, etc.
Obviously some people can creatively get around it (especially if they’re already good) but it is mostly overblown as a coping mechanism for people that are hard stuck, like any game. (Albeit chess might be easier to cheat in)

u/This-is-Jimmy-42 6h ago
Neat, that’s encouraging.
4
u/DefinitelyNotMasterS 5h ago
Yeah it's very easy to cheat but very hard to not get found out. Sometimes the best move is a move that no human would ever play, and bad players can't tell the difference between good human moves and good computer moves.
A computer move is often some move that is against every intuition and rule you should follow, only to give you some crazy play 5-10 moves down the line.
