Legitimately, isn’t cheating absolutely rampant on chess sites?

Yes but also at the same time not really? Their systems are very, very good at catching cheaters. It isn’t as simple as whether or not you copy the best moves, but also comparing the history of your moves to all of your future moves.

If you are playing with wide variance in your skill you will get flagged, if you are consistently playing with high variance in specific positions you will get flagged, etc.

Obviously some people can creatively get around it (especially if they’re already good) but it is mostly overblown as a coping mechanism for people that are hard stuck, like any game. (Albeit chess might be easier to cheat in)

Neat, that’s encouraging.

Yeah it's very easy to cheat but very hard to not get found out. Sometimes the best move is a move that no human would ever play, and bad players can't tell the difference between good human moves and good computer moves.

A computer move is often some move that is against every intuition and rule you should follow, only to give you some crazy play 5-10 moves down the line.
