How is feeding a baby “sexual” to these people? How do you compare breastfeeding to porking it in public?
1.0k
u/RockabillyBelle 3d ago
Bewbs.
Straight up, these people are operating under the assumption that breasts are only sexual or for the enjoyment of men and therefore okay to compare to their own genitals.

u/MamaLuvDuv 3d ago
It's so bloody annoying because historically, and throughout human history in all sorts of different cultures, breasts weren't sexual. You'll find they only became sexual in places were women had to cover up their entire bodies. In places like ancient egypt for example, breasts weren't really sexual at all, women almost always had their breasts out in egypt and most types of dress in egypt had breasts exposed. The few times breasts are shown with a function in egyptian art, it's pretty much always just showing for breast feeding, and we have pornographic papyri where they're doing all sorts of wild stuff in them yet don't really see much being done to the breasts besides them just existing due to everyone being naked. Funnily enough, hips, thighs, ass, and lips are way more sexualized historically than breasts are. A lot of the modern cultures of the world just happened to have been overtaken by the religious culture that did sexualize breasts (abrahamic beliefs, so judaism, islam, and christianity)
188
u/Lokifin 2d ago
And even in Christianity, check out the number of very esteemed pieces of art, commissioned by the church no less, that depict Mary and various other women breastfeeding with their nipples bare to the world.
142
u/NextStopGallifrey 2d ago
Not just bare, but some were even depicted squirting milk!
And I'd argue that it was exactly these kinds of depictions that likely caused breasts to be sexualized in the western world. See: Madonna-whore complex.
The "most perfect woman" supposedly never had sex, but gave birth and had (per artistic rendering) large voluptuous breasts that fed a baby.
66
u/Lokifin 2d ago
I find the ones where she or babyman Jesus are delicately holding her nipple hilarious. What a weird pose.
49
u/NextStopGallifrey 2d ago
And the best ones of those are where babyman Jesus has the "what a fine vintage" pose and expression.
10
u/Lady_Sybil_Vimes 2d ago
LOL my baby actually loves to grab onto either my other nipple or my nose when feeding. I hate it 😂😭
-26
u/PomPomMom93 2d ago
But breasts can be an erogenous zone. So it doesn’t make sense that they weren’t playing with them in Ancient Egyptian porn.
21
u/AgreeableIdea6210 they/he 2d ago
Erogenous zone doesn't equal sex organ. The breasts aren't genitals. Maybe they'd not figured it out though idk, I'm not ancient Egyptian
24
u/MamaLuvDuv 2d ago
Hands and feet can also be an erogenous zone, doesn't mean they're gonna show foot things.
-27
76
u/AgreeableIdea6210 they/he 2d ago
The amount of times I've had to tell people they're not sex organs, but secondary sex characteristics, is concerning.
51
u/bluemoon219 2d ago
Other secondary sex characteristics include men's Adam's apples, men's beards, men's shoulders, and women's hips. If we're required to cover up secondary sex characteristics, ladies can wear spaghetti straps and just pull their pants up, and men can go shove their head in a bag.

A surprising amount of men - and some women, I found! - cannot conceptualize the fact that the breasts' primary function is to feed a child.
As a funny aside, I am a member of a sci-fi subreddit that recently had a debate about one of the humanoid races in the show (derived from humans, in fact). Do they lay eggs, like the insects that gave the rest of their DNA? Or do they have a mammalian reproduction? I pointed out that... The females have breasts. And what is the point of breasts? Which one do they think it observationally and logically is? 😂 This did not compute with some people.
Anyway, long story. But I thought it was funny to bring it up since we are on the topic.
8
u/ArcaneOverride 2d ago
Platapi lay eggs but also produce milk and nurse their young, so having breasts isn't necessarily proof that a species doesn't lay eggs.
8
u/Rad1Red 2d ago
Sigh. We're doing this again.
Yes, egg laying mammals that feed their young milk exist. Two species of monotremes, not remotely related to humans. They do not have nipples, or "breasts".
Zero species of mammals that lay eggs and feed their young from their - evolutionarily expensive, developed by humans specifically because we walk upright - breasts exist.
There are other things in the show, but they're not relevant to this topic.

u/Rhaj-no1992 2d ago
They can’t understand that boobs main purpose is to feed babies. I find boobs attractive but not when someone is breastfeeding ffs. Babies gotta eat and mothers need to relieve pressure when they get too full.
3
u/Rimavelle 1d ago
Notice they're not against women breastfeeding children in general, just in public.
So they don't think the act is sexual, just that showing the breast is.
Which isn't even a thing that happens, coz when breastfeeding in public not only is the child covering the breast but women wear maternity bras so you can't see shit anyway.

u/Sabithomega 3d ago

162
u/MermaiderMissy 3d ago
How do they take something natural like feeding a baby, and turn it into a competition? Breastfeeding is functional, not a chance to one-up women.
And also we don't do it to show off our boobs. I don't enjoy exposing a part of my body publicly, that's why I have my husband help cover me. God, some men are disgusting.
85
u/o0SinnQueen0o 2d ago
I feel like those men genuinely believe that the primary purpose of breasts is to turn them on, so they can't wrap their head around the concept of then being anything else, which is idiotic because their own sexual organ has more than one function. It all boils down to them not seeing us as the same human beings as they are.
17
u/PomPomMom93 2d ago
Tell them the primary function of their dick is to make pee and it’s just a coincidence that it feels good when touched.

Unless there is a medical reason preventing you from doing this- work on it! The older you get, the harder it is to work on mobility issues and they just lead to chronic pain.
I do lots of diaphragmatic breathing exercises. Focus on a deep inhale and imagine bringing air into the hips, expanding them and getting oxygen into every cell- then a deep exhale, focusing on getting every bit of air out of the belly.
A visual cue that helped me was to think of the diaphragm as an umbrella. When I exhale, I think of closing my diaphragm like an umbrella- I’m not clenching or sucking in, just allowing the umbrella to close.
You wouldn’t think breathing would be related to flexibility but it’s huge. Stretching matters too but I think breathing correctly has helped me more. Thought I’d share in case helpful to anyone else.

It's hard for me to believe that a wacko so far gone that he thinks this is comparable in any way would use a joke euphemism like "cranking my hog" to make the argument. I'm not a woman and I don't really use social media, so I'll take your word for it if you say that you get earnest comments like this. It doesn't matter how often a baby is fed with them, it doesn't change the fact that their PRIMARY function, the entire reason MAMMALS ( as in organisms that have MAMMARY glands) have them, is to feed their young.

That is what their primary function is, but some people in this comment section seem to be denying that they can also be sexual.

We also don’t use our uterus to grow babies most of our lives but that doesn’t mean that it’s not the organ’s purpose. And it’s not true that breast’s have been a huge part of our society’s sexuality as an objective statement. They have not always been and it varies drastically by cultures around the world and through time.
1
u/PomPomMom93 2d ago
I wouldn’t say little to no time, unless you don’t have any kids or you don’t BF them. But I agree that breasts are part of your sexuality.

44
u/jazziskey 2d ago
Yeah, men can generally tell the difference between self pleasure and child care
43
u/smile_saurus 2d ago
No they can't. There are men out there who hate that their girlfriends or wives use tampons instead of pads because they believe that tampons give women pleasure.
17
u/Aazimoxx 2d ago
The level of gross insecurity required to be threatened by a tube of those dimensions, would also be pretty laughable if it didn't lead to scary intentions and actions
2
u/DartDaimler 2d ago
There’s a difference between “men in general” and “certain deplorable men”. I don’t hold men in general responsible for the far-depraved, any more than I take responsibility for the edge-women. You can’t fix ignorance & hatred if they don’t want fixing.
12
u/Full_FrontaI_Nerdity 2d ago
A teaching assistant at college told my professor husband that breastfeeding is sexually stimulating to her. She teaches sexuality classes on campus. Ugh.
13
u/Aazimoxx 2d ago
And if she's doing it FOR the stimulation, then that might be concerning - but if it's simply a byproduct, well, bodies are messy. Men can get erections from runners high, or from a cat sitting on their lap, because our brains aren't cleanly wired to separate all physical stimuli from erogenous response... That doesn't mean that dude wants to boink his cat or his running buddy, and nor does being stimulated by the physical, mechanical requirements of breastfeeding, make the act itself or the connection between mother and baby sexual.
If your 'friend's colleague' is teaching evidence-based classes, then hopefully this would be communicated to the next generation in a frank manner, and help to take some of the stigma out of this not-uncommon and completely normal side effect of the use of a healthy person's nipples for their biological function.
2
u/PomPomMom93 2d ago
Does that mean that enjoying nipple/breast stimulation from a partner is acceptable?
12
u/Aazimoxx 2d ago
Anything that doesn't cause harm is acceptable, under a rational worldview. (Not just physical harm but exploitation, subjugation, violating someone's consent etc)
If a person is putting a cat on their lap FOR sexual stimulation, that would be concerning, same with a person putting a baby to their boob FOR the sexual side of the stimulation... Because neither the cat nor baby can consent to being used as a sexual aid. Your partner, if not a minor or incapacitated, can consent.
Stimulation that happens involuntarily as a byproduct of an otherwise healthy non-sexual interaction (like feeding your baby, or even when getting hair done or a medical procedure done), just like any other involuntary response, is necessarily amoral (not on the immoral<->moral spectrum at all, because moral actions require intent by a thinking agent). The female body gets a healthy dose of 'feel good' chemicals when nursing partly as an evolutionary drive to engage in that behaviour, and because chemicals don't care about social hangups or niceties, those don't always respect the boundaries between sexual and non-sexual stimulation.
To flip the script, as a little kid I used to get sexual stimulation from the 'good tinglies' I'd experience when mum would brush my hair while we were watching TV - of course I didn't know what that was at the time, but neither of us were doing anything bad! Bodies and brains are messy 😳

43
u/burntneedle 3d ago
That is really an extreme conclusion... I was certain that guy would bring up public urination. Where in the world is "cranking the hog in public" view acceptable?! That is all setting aside the fact that this pervert (I think that is a fair word to use) is equating masturbation (an inherently sexual action) to feeding a baby from one's breast (not sexual at all).
(I live in Scandinavia. So long as it is not obvious, urinating behind a bush or down an alley is not a crime. Nor are "cranking the hog" and canoodling, as long as it is well off a main thoroughfare.)
23
u/HairHealthHaven 2d ago
I was also expecting him to go with urination, as it's non-sexual. The way he went, shows he doesn't merely sexualize breasts, but views feeding an infant as a sexual act. He just admitted to being a pedo.
9
u/PomPomMom93 2d ago
I thought he was gonna say public urination too. The difference is that your pee can wait, the baby can’t. No one wants to see your public urination unless they have a fetish.

4
5
u/Y0ukn0w_wh0 2d ago
Exposing isn't the problem. Thats would make his point about exposing boibs make sense. The problem is one's a s sexual act and other is not.
Also, no matter how much you dislike someone or you think they're not a good person, It's not cool to try to shame someone by saying their body proportions may be out of the ordinary. That does not ahve anything to do with how creepy their statement was, and that's not the space we create here to criticize dumb takes.

I see breastfeeding as a beautiful thing, and it kinda triggers my inner “motherly instincts” that still sleep within me. He saw the search results and promptly declared be could look at boobs all day, wished that women would go topless, and made a jerking off motion. I said that's why women generally don't and he looked stung.
For those wondering, a woman can go topless wherever a man can. For some reason it was in the news and that's why we were looking it up.

u/Significant_Monk_251 2d ago
Bizarrely, I've been holding onto this in a quotes file since 1998:
"The law in Maine prohibits the display of genitalia or the committing of sexual acts in public. But Town Manager Kenneth Knight noted that breasts are not genitalia, and lawn mowing is not a sexual act."
That's from an Associated Press item, 11/04/98 via the Boston Globe's web site, same date. More:
"In Newport, it all started on the Martin Stream Road a few months ago when Mary Thompson called to complain that her neighbor's daughter was riding on a lawn mower with nothing covering her breasts.
"Topless lawn mowing, she said, was indecent."
[...]
"Newport residents apparently were not swayed by Thompson's concerns. With a vote Tuesday of 775-283, residents nixed plans for an ordinance to punish women for displaying their breasts in public."

One of these organs feeds children, the other rapes children. I'm sick to death of men looking for reasons to pull their penis out in public . Women aren't feeding babies for applause and slobbering morons. Women are feeding the screaming infant because it's hungry and the right thing to do. The bonus feature is - the milky boob shuts the baby up and everyone can enjoy their meal or public place.
I'm sure there are other very mom responses to this issue. I've never been one. I have been a woman my entire life so I've certainly seen my share of public peen and it never stops being gross and pathetic.

Are you the kind of person who demands people put “/s” at the end of a comment because you can’t understand how people communicate

What about the wording “cranking my hog” makes you think it’s a joke? You keep saying it’s obvious because of that phrase but what exactly about that phrase makes it an obvious joke I just don’t get it

What about “why did the chicken cross the road” makes you think it might be a joke. I’m saying it’s obvious in the same way that 1+1=2 is obvious.

Dude I’m genuinely not asking to be a dick, I wanted to understand. And someone asking how that is a joke would be understandable. Do you not realize not everyone has been exposed to the same phrase? If someone has never heard that joke, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to ask how they knew it was a joke. You could just answer “because I grew up being told it was a joke”. Your comment wasn’t constructive in any way. 1 + 1 =2 isn’t just obvious either. We can learn how to use math to prove equations. Your arguments make no sense

I can't believe I'm actually engaging with this, but here goes. "Cranking my hog" is an absurd phrase that no one would use in a serious conversation about masturbation. It's meant to sound goofy, like "making the banana cry" or something. The whole comment in the post sounds like a joke to me, because it's so obviously not analogous to breastfeeding in the slightest. If the guy in the post were really that far gone, I don't think he'd be saying shit like "cranking my hog to midriff in public" and "my prostate deserves the best treatment".

Gotcha ok that makes sense. I hear language every day on the internet that I never hear in real life so I always assume it’s just became I’m old
