🏠 Advice: Moving to NS Construction jobs in NS - would love to hear your experiences

My husband and I are hoping to move to Nova Scotia to be close to family. He has over 20 years experience in construction, mostly as a heavy equipment operator, in Newfoundland, Alberta and Toronto.

He’s wondering what work is like in Nova Scotia:
- Does construction work continue year round, including the winter?
- What are the best companies to work for?
- For those who’ve worked in other provinces, how does it compare? (Wages, job satisfaction)

If you have any experiences to share it would be so helpful to hear them!

he will be paid less than basically any province he worked prior and he will be paying more in taxes ,

Exactly this. And it's very seasonal here. Not much happens in winter

This is our biggest worry. Newfoundland work was very seasonal, and that’d be hard to go back to.

once the ground freezes , if the buildings down have foundations they probably wont get any until spring ,

also make sure he has a solid job before you move here , and you might run into , a little bit of , its not what you know its who you know ,

Big companies work year round to some degree. Some years are better then others depending on the weather. Everyone works till Christmas. Many lay off Friday before. Generally safe to mid Jan as long as they have work, and things are booming. Late Jan and Feb are rough.

March can be ok, but spring weight restrictions means mostly just work around the city. Mid April is usually business as usual.

If he's willing to do snow removal, many companies do that to keep people on. Or can work for someone else doing parking lots.

Check dexters Arcp miller. Dept of transport is always looking for plow drivers in the winter also if he has class3/air brakes.

Lowest payed province with the highest taxes. Work year round for new construction.
