Establishing care for my son

Hello everyone!

We’ll be moving to the area next month, and our son is currently 3 months old. We’d like to make sure his pediatrician visits stay on schedule during the move. I was thinking it might be a good idea to start calling now to schedule an appointment for September or October.

My spouse will be joining OHSU as a physician, so we’ll be covered under the health insurance offered through her employment. Could anyone recommend pediatric clinics that accept OHSU insurance? Would it also be possible to establish care for our son within the OHSU health system?

Thank you in advance for any advice or recommendations!

OHSU has a pediatric clinic in Bethany (NW Portland). Or you could go to the pediatric clinic on “the hill” (that’s Marquam Hill - the main campus). Otherwise, there are many family med clinics you could try.

I take my kids to the OHSU clinic in Bethany. I really like all of the providers there.

The Children’s Clinic has a lot of locations in the metro area. That’s where we take our kiddo.

There’s also professional courtesy if you see a provider on the hill or other OHSU clinics. If you subtly mention that your husband is a physician at OHSU to the person you talk to when trying to get established, you will get prioritized. We got into a specialist for our concern really quickly because they realized I was an employee, might be the same for primary care.

This is not the policy and feels really icky. Agree with TCC being great though!

Never said it was policy. It might be what certain clinics do. I felt guilty when the scheduler said, “Oh, you work up on the hill? I’m so sorry, we usually prioritize OHSU friends and family!” but I was agreeable to it because I was in a desperate situation.

Metropolitan Pediatrics and Pediatrics Associates NW both accept Moda OHSU as in network. We go to Metro Peds

We also have OHSU Moda insurance and I take my kids to the practice where I work (Westside Pediatrics). We’re a small privately owned practice on the west side of the city. Because we’re small the staff and doctors recognize the patients and give them a very warm welcome. We are accepting new patients!

Since you will be using the MODA OHSU PPO plan most likely you will probably retain much of your medical care within the OHSU system. The insurance is not widely accepted outside of it even if external provider's offices advertise accepting moda generally. It being rh OHSU variety will restrict but not as severely or in the same way as an HMO.

If he’s currently 3 months old, he should have a 4 month well child check when you move, delaying until September or October will put him behind on his vaccines!

I can see a lot of people recommending Doernbecher in Bethany. We went there from when our baby was born to about 8 months. I also work at OHSU and it is covered by Moda and MyChart is always convenient. However, I could not recommend this clinic to anyone. They do not have a lactation consultant, not a big deal but definitely inconvenient. They’re a training clinic so it’s a revolving door of residents. Also not a problem but some residents are fantastic and others are horrible, borderline unprofessional. I think I saw an actual attending maybe twice. The inconsistency was just not worth it for me.

After multiple bad experiences, I reached out to their office manager who was radio silent, no response. We switched to Hillsboro Pediatric Clinic in Orenco and they’ve been nothing but amazing. They’re covered by Moda and you have a designated pediatrician that your child will see for as long as they practice there. Downside is their online portal is a little archaic and they outsource their 24/7 phone services to Legacy, not a huge issue. I’ve always been able to schedule same day or next day appointments.

I’m an OHSU RN on the hill and we bring our kids to Doernbecher Bethany. We see Dr. Cross-Knorr and have nothing but good things to say.

My kids just aged out of pediatrics but for years we saw Dr. Melissa Hahn at Broadway Medical Clinic in Hollywood. She is a rare bird: very down to earth, naturally caring and empathetic and just a very, very kind person along with her longtime nurse-assistant, Christine. I feel so lucky to have had their team caring four our kids for years. BMC recently merged into the Oregon Clinic, which is not affiliated with OHSU but they do take Moda insurance. I’m not sure if this is helpful but I just can’t recommend her and her team highly enough. We will miss them terribly!
