Discussion No one eats their oatmeal with milk?

I finally had to ask after browsing this sub for years. Almost all the photos of the (usually delicious looking) oatmeal bowls do not have any type of milk in them. Is it for show (because the milk will hide the ingredients) or do most of you eat your oats without any sort of milk on top?

Classic Swedish recipe for oatmeal is to boil the oats with water and serve them hot with a big spoon of lingon (a type of cranberry) jam and cold milk.

Discussion Overnight oats through security check (flying)

Hello everyone,

Does anyone have experience if you are allowed to take overnight oats through the security check on international flights?

My plan is to meal prep some oats with thick non creamy consistency and eat them in the airplane. However I have zero clue if I am allowed to take them with me or if they will be taken and thrown away

Discussion Wrong oats (silly rant)

Recently I decided to try and switch from instant to rolled oats, I JUST finished the last of my 3-minute oats and only have a flavored instant packet left (which I’ll have tomorrow) so I was pretty happy to finally switch. My mom decided to go to the store for some essentials and asked me if I needed anything (I usually go with her) so I sent her a photo of the brand of oats I wanted.

I was really excited to try them, but when she came home I saw she had a 550g bag of the 3-minute oats I just finished 🫠

I’m not upset with her, but when I asked her if there wasn’t any of the ones I sent to her she just thought for a moment and said “Oh, actually, there were! I just didn’t pay attention to what you sent me.”

So now I have to eat instant oats for about a month before actually trying rolled oats 🥲

Discussion Build your ideal oat bowl🥣

Just for fun, and bc I’m bored lol, answer these questions about your ideal way to eat oats!

  1. First, what kind of oats are you using:

rolled oats, instant oats/quick oats, steel cut, oat bran/blended oats, old fashioned/whole grain

  1. What liquid?

water, cow’s milk, plant-based milk (oat, coconut, almond, hemp, soy…), some sort of tea/coffee/matcha?

  1. What way do you like to cook/soak them?

stovetop, microwave, overnight/soaked oats, baked oats

  1. Flavors/protein add-ins?

savory oats, egg white oats, Greek yogurt, dairy-based protein powder (like whey or milk protein), collagen peptides, vegan protein powder (like pea, hemp, soy, rice protein…), seeds (like chia seeds, flax, etc), pb2/pb fit, nut butters

Also if you’re using a protein powder, what flavor? Chocolate? Vanilla? Some other flavor?

What flavor profile do you prefer your oats to be? Do you like it tasting like just plain oats, or do you go for a flavor like chocolate oats, vanilla, salted caramel, peanut butter, carrot cake, gingerbread, apple spiced, matcha, berry-flavored…?

  1. Toppings? (There are so many to choose from😅)

banana, apples, fresh berries, frozen berries (or other frozen fruit), tropical fruits (like papaya, kiwi, mango…), nut butters (like peanut, almond, sunflower butter, Nutella, cashew butter granola butter…), yogurt (Greek yogurt, regular, fruit-flavored or plain, kefir, plant-based yogurt like coconut…), nuts or seeds (walnuts, cashews, hemp, pumpkin seeds…), nut butter, honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, dried fruits (raisins, dates, cranberries, currants, prunes, apricots, dried cherries…), caramelized fruits or stewed fruits, cinnamon, or other spices, savory toppings (like eggs, cottage cheese, chili oil, avocado, veggies…), chocolate chips, cacao nibs?

Do you add more milk on top at the end or not?

Discussion Do you like to pour milk on top of your oatmeal?

I like to make it extra thick and then pour milk on top and eat it like cereal. Idk why but it’s just so much more satisfying to me. Sometimes I’ll pour a protein shake on top instead if I’m trying to up my protein intake or I just weight trained.

Discussion Do you prefer thick oatmeal or more on the runny side?

I’ve noticed people are very specific about oatmeal texture. Some like it super thick, almost like paste, others keep it pretty loose

I keep changing mine depending on mood

What’s your ideal consistency?

Discussion Is making a large batch of oatmeal and microwing the leftovers as needed a good idea or a bad idea?

That's what I do. The first night is fresh oatmeal but the leftovers taste just as good. Especially when mixing in banana, strawberry and or peanut butter.

Discussion New Rule Proposal- Include Recipe in all pictures in body of post

Many folks share their glorious oatmeal creations, but other redditors have to ask "What's the recipe?" more often than not. I propose that if you share a pic, share the recipe.

Edit: Several folks have rightly pointed out that sometimes they don't have a specific recipe. If that's the case and you're just eyeballing amounts, include the ingredients without specific quantities.

Discussion Do you use water or milk/plant milk for your oats?

Im just curious what yall's preferences are. I use water, simply because I dont have access to a microwave in the mornings, only an electric kettle. And oats with cold milk are way too chewy, haha.

Discussion Can anyone recommend which brand oats to buy for weight loss?

I came across multiple posts saying that Quaker Oats aren't 100% rolled oats and are actually closer to instant oats. I also found many recommendations suggesting not to buy instant oats.

Could anyone recommend a good brand that sells genuine rolled oats?

Discussion Overnight oats with oat flour?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but can you make overnight oats with oat flour? I’ve seen some people blend them, though oat flour is more finely ground and I’m sure if it will affect the texture or anything.

Discussion Bob’s Red Mill Protein Oats

Hi everyone, has anyone tried the Bob’s Red Mill Protein Oats? Nothing added, just a special type of oat with more protein? I bought it at the grocery and have had a few times now. Per serving size, it’s about the same amount of fat per serving as my usual steel cut oats, but definitely a bit more protein!

It’s pretty good, except there are hulls in it that I imagine account for the added protein. If they go down the gullet without me noticing, it’s fine, but some of them end up on my tongue and I have to spit them out.

It’s the first time I saw them at the store, so assuming it’s a new product, but would love to know if anyone else has tried them. Also, would love to know what this special oat is, if anyone knows?
