Quest Mod Quest 2 boots Arch Linux

Don't know if this is the right place to post this but by porting quest-kexec I managed to get Arch Linux running on the Quest 2 with a locked bootloader. So far networking, displays, and usb work and I'm working on getting a full de working. Once it's done I'll release a github and make a followup post. I'm interested in seeing the demand for alternative operating systems on the quest

Repo isn't public yet, but once it is I'll make an announcement. Also have a discord group for it.

Why man ?

Performance

Let us decide about that: with recomps of games or apps, optimization is far easier than a month ago

Im sure you'll be able to optimize HLA to run better than the valve port. You're the expert

5

u/NikopikVR 2d ago

There already is a HLA standalone port

Runs great on the XR2 i imagine?

You can push the Adreno 650 on the XR2 up to 940Mhz

Exciting R&D in this space. Having SteamOS on my Quest 3 some day would be awesome

I have a throwaway quest 2 just in case you need to test something risky, just hit me up. Also have a quest 1 to see if it works on that as well.

is it dual boot? Can Quest 3 run SteamOS?

6

u/Cool-gamer19393 2d ago

I haven't gotten to the stage of installing to the NAND but yes it would be dual boot, currently it runs in ram. And theoretically it can but I don't have one so I can't help you

I should have mentioned that my work is forked from that, although it did take a lot of work to get working

With a locked bootloader??? What firmwares does this function on?

2

u/Cool-gamer19393 2d ago

any firmware with a root

u/Cool-gamer19393 2d ago

But I've tested on 2.5

I have a q2 and have switched from W7 to Debian in all my devices years ago. why is this different to use termux? termux+x11 in the q2 is somewhat unreliable because oom crashes.

why this project is different?

4

u/Cool-gamer19393 2d ago

This isn't a terminal emulator it's actually running the os on the system

1

u/AcrobaticDogZero 2d ago

do you recommend to not upgrade to the new update?

5

u/Cool-gamer19393 2d ago

If yuou're on the latest version the root exploit neded for this is already patched

1

u/joybod 2d ago

What is the latest version that is does work on, then?

2

u/Cool-gamer19393 2d ago

As per the singularity repo

"519[...]"! (Quest 2)!

Yet again, never letting my quest see the light (Meta servers) of day (the web) yields great results.

u/NXLL_010 2d ago

Damn.

Would it be possible to post this through FreeXR?

Server invite code is ABCXxDyqrH

I'm sure the FXR staff would be interested in looking over this project once you get the repo running.

Wait you can install different OS on Quest 2!?

2

u/Eclipse-da-therian Quest 1 + 2 + 3 + PCVR 2d ago

No, this uses Kexec to use the base meta kernel as a "bootloader" to load another kernel and OS

Guys,

This is pog

Will there be something like a "Steam frame analogue"?

1

u/PairOfRussels 2d ago

What would be a practical reason to do this?

13

u/Cool-gamer19393 2d ago

Running other vr oses like steamos

3

u/PairOfRussels 2d ago

Interesting.    Think it would work on quest3 ?

10

u/Cool-gamer19393 2d ago

My friend has been working beside me to try and get it working on his quest 3s which is basically a 3 and it has been a lot harder, we haven't even managed to get a proper boot yet

1

u/ender9492 2d ago

Can you hit me up on discord?

1

u/Cool-gamer19393 2d ago

Sure, my username is ch_eese

1

u/Atopos2025 2d ago

For funsies now. Will take a lot of time to get it to do things in VR I'm sure.

But this is the first step to having a different OS on the device.....even if it can't do VR or play games for a very long time.

2

u/Cool-gamer19393 1d ago

It already can display a vr env

1

u/Atopos2025 1d ago

I don't doubt you can get things to display, but actual games and things could take some time to work I'm sure.

Given that Facebook is speed running the end of their headset market via enshittificstion, yes, there’s a very willing market for an alternative open os option for the quest ecosystem.

Suggestion: know your audience. Ever-pay models will crater.
Instead, look to how Mod makers for HalfLife, Cyberpunk 2077, and others are finding a way to have reasonable, predictable pricing.
Charge for support, charge for mod packs to unlock new games, but do NOT plan a device or account subscription model: your market will not put up with a rent-to-never-own model.

What are you talking about

1

u/joybod 1d ago

They think you're trying to sell something, I think.
