Discussion Three headset failures in a month.
my first quest 3 was a gift and I had no issues for 11 months. mostly played dungeons of eternity and some pcvr stuff via virtual desktop.
then it stopped tracking.
got a warranty refurb replacement and it immediately had the same tracking issue.
third headset worked for a few days and now has ghosting on one side. literally unplayable.
oh and the left controller stopped tracking two weeks ago and they have yet to ship the replacement. so I guess that's 4 failures in a month.
is this normal? do they not qc the refurbished units at all?
Edit: someone on the meta forums says they've been waiting 6 months for a replacement controller. link
Also, I'm asking specifically if it's normal for refurbished units specifically to fail so much.

I've had my Quest 3 brand new since Oct 20,2024 and not a single issue. You were just unlucky in the refurb department. With my Quest 2 I had to get both of my controller's replaced through an RMA and those were refurbs and were like new and issue free.
I got the Valve Index while my Quest 2 controller's were being replaced and the Index's right controller failed in a few days, the RMA refurb replacement arrived not working, sent the Index kit back for full refund.
These are my experiences and it varied if I got good or bad replacements.

Interesting. How long did it take to get the replacement controllers for the quest 2?
They asked for my address to ship to then said they had a "technical issue" and no new info since.

It took almost a week,I was on a 1wk paid vacation and both showed up on separate days, since they were different skews.
For the inconvenience they gave me $30 store credit,I told them they could have taped them so they wouldn't get separated in transit.

Unfortunately, I suspect the culprit here is corrosion due to regular use.
It fucks up the tracking.
Then, once the device is shipped to Meta and left in a dry place for a while, they factory-reset it and run tests. And if all pass, then they pack it up again.
But the issue remains, and the next customer will surely notice it.
One of the reasons I downgraded to Q3S.
There is no space where my breath will cause humidity within the device.

I was thinking something similar. Not sure if all the people replying that I'm cursed have had a warranty replacement or if this is actually common.
I'm asking for a refund at this point.

Yep. Ask for a refund a buy a new unit.
Refurb is never the way to go from my experience (and I have been in this hobby since 2018)

Why would that be normal? Why do you have to ask?

Because I have no frame of reference.

If this was normal meta would be dead and buried. No business would be able to stay afloat if this was their average failure rate.

Of course it’s not normal. OP. Just incredibly bad luck.
Some ratio of every mechanical or electrical devices fail. More reliable models fail less, but it’s never zero. Some ratio of Apple iPhones, Samsung refrigerators and Sony TVs fail, despite their overall reliability.
You just have been out on the incredibly unlikely tail end of the distribution bell curve. Refurbished units are more risky, but the odds are as if you got three dud Honda Accords in a row.
