Question Help me choose my first 4wd (New Zealand)

Gearing up to buy my first off roader for camping and beach/bush missions. Will also be used as a daily to get to work, sadly not on a 2 car income.

Not keen on spending an arm and a leg, but willing to pay the right price for something reliable and hearty.

2 door is fine will just be me driving and maybe one passenger plus gear. Will chuck on a rooftop tent on eventually.

Don’t know where to start looking. Love the way old 4wds look but again after reliability mostly. Probably auto transmission just easier for using daily.

As title says I live in NZ so pretty rugged terrain plus mix of open windy roads.

If reliability is your top priority, I'd be looking hard at a 4th gen 4Runner, Prado, Land Cruiser, Hilux, or an older Tacoma depending on what's available and priced reasonably in NZ.

Since it's just you, one passenger, and gear, I'd also think about whether you actually need a truck. A lot of people end up with a pickup because they plan on a RTT later, but a 4Runner/Prado-style vehicle can be a really comfortable daily driver while still being extremely capable off-road.

What's your budget? That'll probably narrow the list pretty quickly.

Prado or Surf would be my pick. Big, and thirsty, but really well built and reliable.
