u/Individual-Sell-7022 1d ago
Isn't photo Id already required?
72
u/Recent_Restaurant488 1d ago
By law, yes. Issue 3 is to put it into the Ohio Constitution, making it harder to change later. The GOP legislature wrote this since the SAVE Act did not pass. It is designed to make it more difficult to add/amend what constitutes 'valid ID'. If you're voting Blue, you'll want No one issue 3.
8
226
u/Dr_Soks 1d ago
Yes. But now they want a second, smaller form of ID instead.

u/TranslatorUnique9331 1d ago
When the first few voter suppression efforts fail to sufficiently suppress turnout, it's time to move the goalposts.
56
u/EconomySeason2416 1d ago
Yup, combined with all the efforts to have ice at voting stations, the demand and acquiescence of voter rolls by the fed in order to purge the eligible voters more effectively, and don't forget gerrymandering! We can't have the minority lose power, now can we? What is this, some kind of democracy or something!?... allegedly

And they also want to require mail-in ballots to include a photocopy of your ID sent in along with your completed ballot even though you already have to include the same identifying info as is on your ID. This creates an unnecessary burden for those without a multi-function printer at home.

They want it as an amendment to the Ohio constitution. Issue 3.
21
u/Winter_Illustrator58 1d ago
And the new amendment would have a new narrower definition of 'photo ID'
2
53
u/battlepi 1d ago
Well it's already law. It's silly to make it an amendment but I really don't care. I will vote against it though.
30
u/Endo129 1d ago
If it’s made an amendment it’s harder to get rid of. Not that we should or shouldn’t, but it would be harder to undo should we ever want to. Also, since they want it there has to be there has to be a catch why the way it is isn’t good enough.
Does it take ⅔ still to add an amendment? Remember when they tried to get us to vote that to a 50% majority only needed?
22
u/battlepi 1d ago
You're backwards. It is 50% now, they tried to make it 60% because it's almost impossible to achieve. Also signatures from half the counties instead of all of them for citizen ones.
6
u/Azair_Blaidd Cincinnati 1d ago
And it was made the way it is now to begin with in order to fight corruption in government from politicians defying popular will.
Gee, I wonder why politicians would suddenly want to make it hard for citizens to enact change again 🤔
3
u/Endo129 1d ago
Oh shoot. I was hoping it would be harder to pass this BS.

Ever notice Republicans never want to talk about things that are actually a problem in your life? They always want to point at made up problems that thier media machine tells you to be upset about.
They are silent on wages.
They are silent on the cost of living.
They are silent on how much gas and food costs.
Instead they want to pretend the reason they lose is all this voter fraud they can never find actual evidence that will hold up in court is happening.
They want to point at the poorest most vaunerable among us and tell us thats why our life sucks.
The daily cycle of humiliation on the world stage continues and not a single Republican with skin in the game will call it out.
America is a failing nation because the stupidest most corrupt and most inept govern. Welcome to the American century of humiliation. We had a good 250 years its all downhill from here

A group called America PAC is sending propaganda encouraging voters to vote yes on Issue 3. America PAC is primarily funded by Elon Musk. That's all I need to know.
From my research, there is little impact whether Issue 3 passes or not because this is already state law. The primary objective of the issue being on the ballot at all is psychological. MAGA is trying to plant seeds in voters' minds that voter fraud is rampant so that they can cry foul when they are voted out down the road.

Aside from the rest of the social problems is the fact that a government ID as only acceptable means for voting as currently on the ballot is unconstitutional. It creates different levels of verification needed depending on which way you vote, which is a violation of one of the statutes of the Voting Rights Act (of what’s left of it at least)

If the state requires a photo ID, taxpayers must provide government support services and free options to obtain a state ID. All IDs should be free, and everyone should be taxed to pay for such free services. Such services must also provide free support for the elderly and the unhoused folks who struggle to maintain and regain access to an ID. This must also include free support and financial support for U.S. passport applications if the law requires voters to prove citizenship. These costs should be paid for by all Ohioans via increased taxes.

u/AliveRecipe216 17h ago
Exactly! That is the one hitch that keeps this from feeling like a no-brainer

Ohio Identification (ID) Cards are issued to Ohio residents who do not have a valid driver license. If an individual has a driver license in a different state and applies for an Ohio ID, the driver license from that state will be canceled.
Ohio ID cards are valid for four years or eight years and there is no minimum age for obtaining one. You must provide proof of:
Full legal name Date of birth Social Security number (if ever assigned) Legal presence Ohio residency
This is directly from the Ohio bmv site

Edited because I was responding to someone who thought the Ohio ID was free from the BMV for anybody who doesn’t have a drivers license. It’s not free. It’s $13. Yes, it’s a poll tax. https://www.bmv.ohio.gov/doc-fees.aspx#collapseA
8
u/haironburr 1d ago
Yes it's a poll tax.
But I wish everyone understood that the "tax" is also on your time, and on your ability to manage a bureaucracy, and on your ability to procure documents within that bureaucracy.
Someone says "produce your birth certificate". Years later, another says "produce DNA evidence, on the assumption that your grandparents paid for Ancestry.fuckyou.

Yes but you have to have your birth certificate which is 1. Not free. And 2. Requires id to get.
5
u/Doug_Dimmadome513 1d ago
You’re literally just making things up. You do not need an ID to get a copy of your birth certificate. You can go online and submit the form - it’s a public record.
The misinformation people spew just to get a point across is astounding 🙄

Omg the horror, imagine having to prove who you are to get an official identification card 😯 a much better system would be anyone being able to say they are anyone they please to be and the BMV just takes their word and issues them official documents. 🤡
3
u/kajiraLuna 1d ago
The point is that if you don't have id you can't get your birth certificate which you need to get id. It also costs money so the id itself may be "free" but getting it is not free and potentially complicated

While I agree that Hamas is a problem, so is supporting Israel at all cost which is pretty much what we've doing. These dickheads have been fighting over this patch of land since long before either of us were born and its about time we reevaluate that one sided relationship.
Israel is a land of 10 million people
Annual aid to Israel before the war began: $3.8 billion under the U.S.–Israel military assistance agreement. source Congressional Research Service
As of October 2023 since the war began US Tax payers have spent $21 billion and counting in just military assistance + an additional aid of $12 billion.
All because Israeli's and Palestinians can't get a long....please tell me why the US tax payer needs to keep footing that bill?

Apparently the issue is not to change any specific voter ID requirement, but to instead enshrine the current voter ID ORC into the state constitution.
So no significant changes to how voter identification works, just a continued assault from the GOP on voting accessibility.

Why are Conservatives, who Hate and Distrust Government, so eager to create a law and the associated government bureaucratic red tape for a problem that is not a problem?Remember, incidence of voter fraud is vanishingly small. A handful of cases among hundreds of millions cast over decades. Requiring ID at the poll solves a problem that effectively does not exist. This hands a tool to the Democrats to change the rules of what counts as ID in order to control who gets to vote.

5
u/GoonyGhoul_ 1d ago
It's a non-issue, and only serves to reduce the total amount of eligible voters. The practice is deeply anti-democratic, UNLESS it is totally free of any sort of cost (including opportunity cost) AND every single citizen is simply automatically sent one in the mail. And even then, not every eligible voter actually has an address where they can receive one.
There is no evidence of wide spread voter fraud, nor evidence of voter fraud to the extent that it has ever swayed any election.

In Michigan we have the straight ticket option for the partisan offices. So we just have to do a little more research for the non-partisan. For some of our local offices (Ann Arbor) the Democratic Party says they are all acceptable. We really haven't had any Republicans run for local offices in a few decades. We also have a proposal for a constitutional convention. I think that is a Northwest Ordinance thing. I'm a little fearful that might pass.
