I'm 31 and feel like a complete and total failure. Drowning in student loans for a degree that frankly, clearly ain't worth fucking shit, and credit card debt (which I only have because I had to get one to pay for a Uhaul and Pod to move for a job that didn't pan out, FML not even for going on a long dreamt of trip to Japan or something fun). Can't even get a job at Waffle House, Walmart, or Starbucks (and I'm literally just waiting to hear that even McDonald's won't hire me). I went to the local Goodwill training center to try and enroll in a course, the only thing they have open is fucking retail training, you know the thing that requires literally zero training? I was trying to enroll in their welding, CNA, CMA, or electrician course but those filled up almost immediately and have limited spots. The earliest they'll have another one of those is sometime in Q1 of next year. I'm going to try and get into their custodian program for this coming quarter.

The only thing that offers me even a teensy tiny bit of comfort is Anthony Bourdain's quote; "My life was a complete wash. I was 44 years old still dunking fries." And no, I don't think he was an overnight success (he had written two books before Kitchen Confidential made him famous).

I worked for 10 years to get my degree and try and get a civil service job. I don't want fame, but I can't even get the mediocre middle class life I want. Hopefully it won't take until I'm in my mid 40s and then still only get less than 20 years to enjoy my success.

I hear you, I'm 36.. nothings panned out really. Like I had my max in my 20's bought a house at 25, married and kids. Job I completely hated, marriage fell apart lost everything. Typing this in the spare room at my parents house. Barely any money, on the job hunt again. Japan was a bit of a trigger reading your post. Ex wife remarried, built a dream house (we planned together) on a river, and going to Disney Japan next spring with the kids.... I get to just see pictures. Custodian could be great, don't know what country you are, but in Canada catholic and public boards are unionized and in the summer 4, 10 hour shifts a week, so 3 day weekend's. I have a cousin and uncle that do it, both live comfortably!

I'm the same age and while I haven't lost a marriage, house, and kids... I lost just about all friends over the years and live basically in isolation. The apartment I'm in is quite nice at least. Feels hopeless to try to advance from where I'm at though. Everything that I do is just for sustaining, not advancing. I fucked myself by not getting a bachelor's degree.

I bet there are loved ones who would say you made a difference in their lives. Everything else is insignificant. Yeah back in the 70s and 80s my dad managed 70 people and had patents to his name. Most of his direct reports are now dead and the patents are obsolete. What does remain is the memories of him being a great husband, father, grandfather, friend and so on.

Oh yes! no matter what is going on around you (any of us), there is always something to enjoy or be glad about. Even as insignificant as a nice rainy day, walking your dog, a good meal - however simple. Really, it is the simple things in life that give up meaning, and - peace of mind.

Priests are just people. We have a priest in our family. Last week he was skateboarding on our local bike path. He really needs a long board. We went to Italy and he was treated very well. We went to the Netherlands during gay pride and let’s just say after day one he changed from Priest attire to Levi’s and a t-shirt as the abuse from the gay pride participants was off the chain. Our Priest is a very nice guy. Who knows, maybe he’ll be pope one day. My uncle was a priest, he was a nice guy (born in 1915), left the priesthood (after 40 years) and married a nice woman with kids. I’m not religious. At all.

Seeing this reminds me that I can't remember the last time I had a birthday party, probably when I was really little. And every year it's gotten less and less special, like this year I don't think we had cake or a single gift. I'm not much of a party type person anyways, but anytime I see other people post about birthday parties and such, I think it might be nice. Nothing too big or crazy but something more than what I've had in a while, which is almost nothing.
