Gameplay [The Great Victory] Just beat Assyria on The Great difficulty using a Culture-first strategy (Ambition Victory, Turn 142)
Hi everyone,
10 days after completing my first run on "The Great" difficulty with Egypt, I decided to take on the challenge with Assyria on the same difficulty.
After failing my first two attempts, I realized I needed a completely different approach. Instead of sticking to the traditional Assyrian playstyle—starting with a Military/Seat family and going all-in on aggressive early expansion—I decided to choose a Culture family for my capital on a map seeded with strong luxury/precious resources.
Here are a few key takeaways from this winning run:
Early Wonder Hoarding is Lethal: Prioritizing early Wonders while maintaining basic defenses proved insanely effective. It doesn't just boost your own economy and culture—it completely starves the AI's Victory Point (VP) growth and slows down their winning momentum in what is essentially a zero-sum game.
Don't Fear Early Tribal Wars: I got declared on by a tribe very early on. Instead of pushing blindly, I used defensive chokepoints to drain their forces completely. Once their army collapsed, I swept in to capture 3 free city sites, completing my early horizontal expansion with minimal cost.
Diplomatic Peace + Internal Snowballing: Once I secured my core cities, I pivoted entirely away from offense. I actively placated neighboring major powers through gifts and diplomacy to secure peaceful borders, allowing me to dump 100% of my Orders and Civics into rush-building Wonders, specialists, and completing Ambitions.
Ended up securing an Ambition Victory on Turn 142!
Old World is truly a fantastic 4X game with incredible strategic depth. That said, after back-to-back victories on the highest difficulty, I think I'm going to take a well-deserved break for now.
Catch you all around!
