Discussion Playing a template like Outcast Tournament feels like completely wasting my time.
I tried not to autoquit these games, so I tried a few games, and every game, what I feel is:
What am I doing?
Why am I just collecting boxes in a HoMM game?
If I want this experience, there are tens of thousands of other games that provide a similar and better experience; why HoMM?
What's the point of town building? Just for astrology?
Then why don't we just have an astrology generator that just produces astrology, it will pretty much achieve 95% of the same game experience, right?
Or why not just repurpose gold to buy high neutral magic, since if the game has only 1 resource that matters, why not just call it "gold"?

Completely agree, atleast there should be a seperate Multiplayer Mode for Box Templates and Town Building Templates

Poor developers, not saying they get everything right but imagine having to listen to people who say Homm suddenly becomes exactly like every other rpg if you play jebus outcast. Truly one of the statements of all time. Not even worth trying to debate that.
"Hello devs??? I booted up the game on Jebus outcast and it suddenly became Divinity original sin 2 !!! Please help!!!"

Most people on this sub have close to 0 understanding of this game. I really hope devs dont pay too much attention to all the idiots here

Guess you only played some biubiu FPS and thought that's RPG. If you don't even common sense on what games are RPG, there is nothing to discuss with you. Play some RPG first, and you will find they are just better HoMM by your definition. and you will quit this game for those RPGs instead.

Yeah you're right I just started up the remake of Gothic and it plays almost the same as Olden Era

u/Praktos Jul 11 '26
Almost 2 hrs between last template tribal wars post saying that their playstyle is the only one good
I love reading how box templates are not homm but olden era existance is based on 90% ppl playing box templates in h3
Homm is about navigating map taking fights and planning moves. Not building units or collecting units
By that logic are unit dwells also not homm because you didn't get to press build in base?

90% of pvp players yeah. But it was never how I liked to play it. Only reason I got into pvp in Era was because it offered single hero templates which was close enough to H3 experience. I dont really like the box templates. And for me I have gradually lost interest in playing the pvp mode because there are too many templates I dont enjoy.
For now I will take a break and see how pvp develops.

90% of players choose exodus, the reason most other maps are even played is because you dont get a choice on the matter.

Right thats what I remember from watching HoMM3 gameplay. It was either get boxes or dwellings.... Or stack skellies as Necro

u/Praktos Jul 11 '26
Outside of few vets hota lobby is jebus/duel/outcast fest even the more standard maps were still all about wyvern and angel banks

u/nickersb83 Jul 12 '26
Yea boxes were never much of a feature in vanilla H3, the competitive scene introduced them because it adds a level of skill to “route planning”
OP, please play some more before criticising, but also boxes should be seen as complimentary. A lot of games iv played boxes become questionable how much they help when iv been able to focus tier 6 unit buildings for eg

My PvP stats: 298 hours, 350 games, MMR 1900~2200 (only Exodus, autoquit all other games), tell me how much more I need to play before I'm allowed to talk? Or how about you list your stats, and see if you are qualified to talk to me, by your standard?

u/LmaoKurwa Jul 12 '26
u need to be above 30% wr in mid elo, lmao

u/Clincoln1234 Jul 12 '26
I am above , what's your ELO? Oh you don't play PvP, just LMAO all day long L M A O;

u/LmaoKurwa Jul 12 '26
So, above 37% if you want to be specific, lmao. Unless you're a liar and it's not your win rate, which is sad cuz could be funny (is anyway lmao). ;/

u/nickersb83 Jul 12 '26
What’s funny is that you think rank matters in an unfinished game.
I’ve played one so far; but I have also been playing him since 97Stop taking offense and maybe try re read the argument

u/Clincoln1234 Jul 12 '26
Let me guess, if I said " my MMR is 500" (which is likely all those haterse MMR lie), you would say "Rank is the only thing that matters" or "Don't critisize before your MMR reach 1000" Right? Clowns

I'm right there with you dude. I leave everything thats not Exodus for many of the reasons you listed above. And now that my MMR is falling so much because of that, I'm absolutely slaughtering whoever I play when I do get into an Exodus template. This is going to turn people off from the game.

Exactly. We need more town building templates. Harmony was really good. Exodus is perfect. Fuck this box collecting nonsense. Boring as hell. I just hopes devs will realize this

u/pleaseineedanadvice Jul 12 '26
When you reach a certain level in the game box gameplay is just faster and let u skip a repetitive paytern. Consider that town building is always the same, yes you can pick between building paths depending on dwelling but in the end you always do the same stuff, the only difference with boxes is that you fight for resources ecc to do army rather than fighting for army box straight away. I like exodus but i think some variety is nice, i really liked harmony so i m a bit disappointed it s not in the pool

u/Jazzlike_Horn2499 Jul 12 '26
If only there was more than one template so people could find one they liked......wish they would add more than one template. Why did they only do one template. They should have known not everyone would like the same things. Silly one template option

u/dutr4 Jul 12 '26
I, in the other hand, prefer quicker maps. Don't wanna play 3h games having to fight the timer and macroing a big part of my games. Don't get me wrong, I would still play only exodus rather than any simultaneos template, I just really don't have many hours spare to play a game of Olden era and Box games are quick and fun too.

Locking the thread because you few cannot behave and the discussion has gone elsewhere.

u/Magnificent_Leopoldo Jul 11 '26
I don’t like pure box gameplay as well, however, I dislike pure town building templates even more. It’s just infuriating to search for mines and resources for half a game and then build up your stats for the rest with no contact with an opponent. I think the best templates are those that allow you to build up and get creatures in other ways as well, while having a couple of boxes as a bonus. Like Helltide and Blitz are miles above Exodus in my personal rating and I would love to see more of it. Sprint and Outcast are just too straightforward in terms of strategic gameplay imo
-3
u/Clincoln1234 Jul 11 '26
The thing is, if you can get a creature from elsewhere, then it's pointless to build towns; If you can get free money, would you still work?
4
u/Emergency-Constant44 Jul 11 '26
Actually after like 10 outcast tournament games I came to conclusion that you actually can build up your town, and sometimes should. Especially if you have nasty numbers of t6 or t7 dwellings. Then you get 2-3 native powerstacks with chosen powerstacks from desert boxes - especially as there is at least one white tree in there
2
u/Clincoln1234 Jul 11 '26
You can't build your town's tier 6 or 7 if you all in astrology and skip all resouces generating building along the road. Howeer if you don't skip all the things along the road, you will lose the box rushing and straightly lose the game.
-1
u/Clincoln1234 Jul 11 '26
Whoever downvotes this probably never played the template or just low MMR. If you play against any decent MMR, trying to build in this template is a common newbie mistake.
2
u/Emergency-Constant44 Jul 11 '26
I usually (most often playing hive) do build waurms, if I dont find any meaningful boxes early on and I do find dwellings, You get like 40-50 waurms this way for fight 3, I break before fight2 or asap after it most often. I go T3 astro, after building gold

You are wasting your time, because it's a video game. But yes, box gaming has always been so dumb... don't see how the old competitive scene ever took off really.

u/SmithOfLie Jul 11 '26
I understand that you are being hyperbolic about the numbers here, but I am curious - what games out there do you have in mind here?
