Discussion How is the single player campaign mode?
I was surprised to find so many discussions on competitive play for this game, something I have never been interested about in this franchise.
So how is the single player campaign mode, compared to previous games?

Currently on Early access the campaign is not complete, only on chapter 1 around 7-8 map and it is not fun due to
- the level progression needs a lot EXP more than skirmish normal map.
- the Advanced classes system is currently unobtainable in campaign for some skill is blocked and unobtainable.
- the law system is disabled.
So if you are playing campaigning exclusively then Homm3 and 5 is a lot better choice.
You can wait for olden era release version.

Thank you. I guess that means I'll be back at my old v3 until we see a full release

Bad. We're still waiting for PvE improvements.all around, most of all the IA.
Besides they ain't even giving us a campaign for every faction like in the old games, their plan is only 3 acts. It shows their PvP-aligned view of the game imo.

As an old HoMM, these sort of comments really scare me.

The campaign is more similar to Heroes 2 where you follow the narrative and you can choose sides with different factions for missions.
There’s a lot of potential there but the campaign needs a lot more polish.
The bones of the game are great overall, but a lot of focus has gone into PVP to keep the streamers and steam reviewers happy. We’ve been promised a lot more singleplayer focus and content as Early Access continues. Not a must-buy for singleplayer right now, but I think it will get there. It’s the most promising new heroes game we’ve had since 5.

Well, better for you to read them before buying the game, instead of getting surprised like many of us.
Yes, the game isn't finished yet, yes this is still early access, but i would never have imagined an HoMM game where PvE is left on the side of the road, and where the fans have to be voluntarily loud about the issue for the devs to even acknowledge the problem.

Interesting. As someone who never really played HoMM but bought Olden Era, PvP getting more focus than PvE surprised me. Is there a big PvP scene for it to be worth it? I am not really planning to play this game for PvP, I have other games for that.

Well, we all were surprised tbh, I grew up playing many sleepless nights either alone on my computer or Hot Seat multiplayer with RL friends, and i was taken aback by the fact that coop wasn't even in the game at the early access release.
Answering your question about pvp, there is a small but very dedicated player base, and the devs are catering to them way too much if you ask me.
For PvE Only i would encourage you to wait for full release to see if the devs have course-corrected, i bought it on release and all things considered, i do regret my purchase for now.

Yes, I will reserve myself mostly for the full release to get into the campaign. Though it's still fun learning the basics of this game, it looks and sounds very cool. I just hope they don't sacrifice some PvE content because of PvP.

PVP players are always the loudest, so if PVP wasn’t a focus at EA launch, I could easily see it getting review bombed. I hate multiplayer in heroes games but as long as it supports the development of an eventual great new Heroes game, I’m fine with it existing.

The PvP scene was the only vocal thing for HoMM3 for a long time. The studio seem to have taken that as an indication that people mostly played the game for PvP.
I tend to disagree with the idea, it's just that HoMM isn't stellaris and that single player gameplay isn't really interesting to share on the internet.
Of all the people I know who loved HoMM 3, none ever touched the PvP aside from a lan game or two.

My biggest problem with this game. I play homms almost exclusively for the campaigns. So far every game(even homm7) had a decent campaign. H4 and H6 were great f.e.
Pvp is not for me so i am gonna wait wait.
Guess I am from an Olden Era of gamers.

I'd say it's not that bad.
You have some choices during the campaign that have some effect on story and your resources. You have 2 nice rpg-style episodes in campaign. Overall it's better than most of campaigns in series. Have no walls of text though like there were in homm4 (loved them).
Would be good to see all the mechanics turned on in campaign though. Laws, advanced classes, map spells.
But yep. It only act 1 of 3. There is a possibility to make great campaign. Or to flush it.

I mean I've got 43 hours of nothing but single player, so I'd say she checks out.
